The thought of someones skin adhering to a non living entity is mind blowing. Here in West Palm Beach Florida there was a woman who was sitting on her couch and her skin became connected to it. She was obese to the point where she could not get up. I beleive she was on the couch for a year. I do not know what finally happened to her, but this article brought me back to that story which made me once again think of, "how surreal is that"?

Surprising to hear that she was small and petite, as most people assumed she was extremely large and had sagging skin that drooped over the toilet and eventually grew around it. I guess her boyfriends has some issues of his own, if he didn't become alarmed around the 2-4 DAY mark...however, i'm not sure that charging him is the answer. Perhaps they are both on the lower end of the intelligence range, and he just figured she was in dire need of her own "space" and "alone time."

When I originally read this story, there was a comment about how the authorities did not know if this poor woman was "mentally or physically disabled".... my thoughts? If someone sits on a toilet for two years... refusing to leave the bathroom... there is SOME sort of mental disability, whether inborn or acquired. And the fact that her skin was adhered to a toilet seat, and her legs atrophied to the point she couldn't stand... that's an obvious physical disability in my eyes. It's just really sad.

Maybe I was kind of whistling in the dark, because I suffer from a mild form of agoraphobia, I'm old, and I'm alone. It isn't hard to imagine such horrors when you have no one. But this young woman DID have someone. Unfortunately, he, too was unable to function as he should have. When I read the Wichita Eagle this morning I was horrified at the story. Images of a 500lb woman stuck in the bathroom. Now the facts are coming out and I feel more understanding of the situation.
The woman was "petite", both are noted by the sheriff as less than average of mental capability.
So here was a poor guy doing okay as far as affording housing and sustenance for he and his girlfriend but even though he urges her out she won't leave her self-imposed prison. They've been together for 16 years, he loves her deeply but is afraid to betray her lest she leave him. If the info that has come forth is correct I don't believe the man should be charged. They both obviously need help. This was a self-imposed
imprisonment, he didn't lock her in.

This story is beyond sad. And, I have to say I kinda do believe it can happen A few years ago, on "Animal Police" (Animal Planet), a german shepard was taken into custody. He had been mistreatd, and the stainless steel "choke" style collar actually became embedded in his skin, and his skin ahd grown around the collar in a simialr fashion as this woman. Anyway they both need intensive therapy.

Reading all the comments gave me a lot of laughs. But to get back to the serious side, the comments questioning why no one notices that something was amiss help answer the comments questioning why this should have made the news. This news item helps us to be aware that these things DO go on, so we can be aware and we can be there for each other. Family DO NOT like to announce problems.
Unfortunately our health care system stinks. You are very fortunate if you can go to a good health-care provider of your choice, and forget about house-calls (much less bathroom calls)if you are really sick. You have to lose most of your assets to qualify for Medicare if I remember correctly, and then how can you afford to pay for repairs for your unreliable old car to get to the doctors? And this presumes the sick person can and will go? If you do have insurance on your own, once you have a chronic illness the insurance company will make sure to price you out of the market so you will eventually not be able to afford that insurance. (Disgusting, since the original premise of spreading the risk has been continually been degraded in the interest of profits). Now assume you are not intellectually up to fighting all of this . . . You get depressed (if you aren't already), feel hopeless, and you do nothing.
My brother hanged himself years ago. I was shocked to learn none of the neighbors nor my relatives knew he was an alcoholic. My parents told no one. One neighbor would pay him for errands with bottles of booze. You never know.

Over a third of every paycheck goes to feed the monster yet my neighbor's wife had to stop working to take care of their 22 year old kid because no health care center exists for them. When my mother was 87, she sat on the toilet for several hours. Every so often, she would wipe and flush ... for no reason (she hadn't done anything). After four hours, I fought like the dickens to get her off the toilet, up, and back in her bed. She screamed, cursed (which was very unsual), hit me, and hollered that I was hurting her and didn't love her. All of this behavior was very uncharacteristic. I eventually called an ambulance and brought her to the hospital where doctors determined that she had had a psychotic break due to a multitude of "mini-strokes." She had finally had one too many. Once the doctors put her on Risperdal, she was fine.

Obviously the boyfriend had mental issues. Should he be charged? Evaluated is more like it! I've worked with many people who were mentally ill and/or mentally retarded and if that is the case with this couple, it's not his fault. People should have checked on them when they hadn't seen her in public for so long. Friends, family, neighbors are to blame if it's determined that the couple were mentally ill. The boyfriend stated he had little understanding of how much time has passed but he also fed her, brought her clothing, etc... and that to me is a red flag that he really didn't have the awareness that many of you are thinking. He probably thought he was doing the right thing and when she became less coherant, that was his cue to worry. At least he did contact authorities, I bet that it was hard to do. We don't know if he tried to help her prior to that though, he may have talked to her about getting help and if she responded in anger or fear he would have backed off.

A sad situation all around but now they both can get the help they need, as long as society doesn't fail them both again.

I think that either he was abusive, or she must have been overweight, and it was not physically possible for him to move her.

I think some people have missed a point here. This lady was in the bathroom for two years but not sitting on the toliet seat for two years. According to the news article, she refused to come out for two years but the estimated time she actually sat on the toliet seat without getting off was around a month. Still strange though. I have a friend whose wedding ring became to small but he didn't remove it. His skin did start growing around the ring and he had to have it cut away and the ring cut off. There was another comment made about "why didn't the neighbors do something." In the interviews of neighbors that I saw they commented that they didn't even know the neighbor had a girlfriend. You don't see the neighbors girlfriend for two years you assume she moved out!

As observers of this story we have the luxury of objectivity. Any reasonable person would agree that this woman should have had intervention much sooner and that the boyfriend neglected her. But try placing yourself in a situation like that. Living with a mental ill individual taxes your psychology well-being - moreso if it's someone close to you.
I was 19 when my father passed away and, at that age, cared for my mentally ill mother. As an only child from a small family I had no external support. After dealing with her irrational mood swings day in and day out I was anxious and nervous. I feared for my own sanity. When I was around friends I felt a sense of normalcy I lacked at home.
My point is that if your only human contact is with the mentally ill your own behavior is inevitably affected. Clearly, the boyfriend should have contacted local psychiatric hospitals sooner. The reason for the negligency seems to be from a lack of, or misaffected, judgement rather than willful and malecious neglect.

If you had, you would have read that the doctor said the skin grew around the toilet seat as it was trying to heal from the bed sores she had from sitting on the toilet so long. As well, he also gave the example of someone having gauze grow into their skin. They had the damaged skin wrapped in gauze. So, unless your skin is injured around/near your wedding ring, your skin's not going to just grow around it dumbass.

Well I can see how it happened. I have had agoraphobia and stayed home for years. The only thing a person can do to help someone is try to get them to a counselor but if the person will not come out because they think they will die or go crazy then what can the caregivers do? Drug them and call an ambulance? Then what, who pays the bill? Get her institutionalized? How many would do that to a love one? No change in our health care system would take care of it either.
Do you really want to help? Then educate yourselves on phobias and find out about your neighbors. If one is stuck in their house because of phobias try to become a friend to them. Learn how to help people with crippling fear gradually come out. A counselor would be best but how many will come to the house?
Thank God I finally found a support group and sucked up all my courage and went. Thought I would die. I gradually got out more and more with the help of a very wonderful counselor until today I am healthy and happy. Just went on a trip to Hawaii. Yes, I still have the fear but have learned how to cope with it. It's not crippling anymore.
Why don't all you go to a web site on phobias and get educated. Then volunteer at a mental health center. Become an advocate. You would be surprised just how many people, your neighbors, friends, relatives are having crippling phobia problems and are stuck at home. Even confined to a small room if it gets bad enough.
The caregivers to these people need help, not to be arrested. They do the best they can with a very bad situation. That poor woman needed her boyfriend to get her food. Who are any of us to judge the boyfriend? He did provide for her basic needs. But dealing with a person with mental and emotional issues is NOT everyones forte. I can tell you from experience that a person with these sort of problems can be very persuasive if not entirely controlling. And unless you are a trained mental health provider with the tools and back ground to deal with them, it can be as daunting for a healthy person as popping the hood on a new diesel pick up and replacing a cam positioning sensor or trying to find a fouled vacume modulation control unit. I am more mechanically inclined then mental health care inclined,,, so for me fixing a new truck would be far easier then "understanding or fixing" these people. My grandfather had a saying,,,, "walk a mile in my shoes".

None of us has done that.

I cannot imagine that this boyfriend himself could be entirely "normal". Which no one has yet defined "normal" for me. Yet, the old saying of Birds of a feather flock together,,, comes to mind. I'm sure she did to him as she did to others. Insisting she was ok, and all was well, and again, I have to question his emotional & mental state in accepting this ruse, after what looks to the rest of us as a ridiculous duration.

So even though it is not my attempt to support complacency here or any kind of politcial correctness,,,, something I'm far from notorious for.... I feel that these are most likely two people who need help and supervision to some level or another. And not legal reprisal.
On the other hand, if they were both happy and functioned in their own way,,, who are you or I to judge that they should live like we do. It takes all kinds to fill a freeway, and I can bet money, there are very few people on here that would want to walk a mile in my shoes and live like and where I do,,, and I'm certain there are very few of you that I would want to be like, or live as you do...

Besides, if she died on the crapper, she'd die like 25% of old people do... We all don't get to live to be old and happy and die in our sleep.

At first this story seemed really ridiculus and unbelievably funny but once the details came into play, this story is really sad. I truely feel sorry for the woman and the man in this story. It's interesting the level ignorance so many humans exhibit.
For someone to spend that amount of time not moving each day, for someone else to provide the sustenance the other needed to survive, changes of clothing etc., obviously they are both mentally ill. I work with DD adults on the weekends, and some are extremely high functioning. Sure there are a few I'd like to see glued to the toilet (just so they can't annoy staff), but you really wouldn't know that some of them aren't "normal."
My first thought was that she was agoraphobic, though that is more commonly associated with open spaces, fear of the outdoors, windows, etc. As for the b/f, I wondered why he didn't contact someone sooner but after reading he is being charged, I don't blame him. There is always some a-hole who's going to screw you over no matter what. Lifes a witch, then you have to deal with the law.

The idea of charging the boyfriend is not a good one. If she had a phobia trying to get her out of there could have been a lot more traumatic than letting her stay, and if you love someone you don't want to hurt them more than they allready are. I think also he may not have wanted to embarress her by calling someone. I do think in the case I layed out, that he was observant and noticed when she was starting to be ill and immediately called then. There is a difference in being ill and doing weird things, and being ill and dying. He made the right call when it was evident she was sick physically

If one is reading this story with a normal mental capacity then one would wonder how in the world someone would sit on a toilet for such a long period of time or how the other person involved could have let the person sit there for so long. However it seems that neither of these people were playing with a full deck so their reasoning skills are just not up to a normal level. We don't know the whole story either. What drove her into the bathroom in the first place? Was she actually confined in there by her boyfriend? Is he telling the whole truth, is she.

You would think that that would have kept her from becoming adhered to it. I, too, thought she must have been morbidly obese to have this happen; but a tiny little thing like her...... I have read many of the comments from people about this unfortunate incident & I can't believe how many stupid people there are out there. Both of these people suffer from diminished mental capacities. The boyfriend should not be charged with anything, he did bring her food, water & clean clothes, by all rights he did take caare of her. Granted, he did wait to long to call for help, but this shows that he is also not of full mental capacity & putting him in jail is not going to help him. If he would have turned his back on her & let her die in there, that would have been a different story, but by caring for her the way he did, it shows that he has the capacity to love & care for someone. If you have ever been exposed to a person with any mental illness you know that it would be possible for someone not to want to leave an area for a while (not 2 yrs) and not be alarmed. I know someone who will not get out of his chair at the table except when someone helps him into bed for 6 hours. After a couple of hours, her legs would have been numb and she wouldn't have been able to stand without help, there is no question that the boyfriend had issues or just didn't know what to do. Have you ever contacted the Mental Health officials for help, there's no money for them to help you. Unless you're rich, dirt poor or have excellent health insurance you are not getting help! If you are in the middle area and can't afford $100 per hour or more for help, you're on your own. There is no money for people with mental illness in this country, we are too busy taking care of everyone outside the USA at least she was lucky enough to have a roof over her head and get daily meals, some are not so lucky.

Some creative persons have been able to remove them completely and attach them to pets while they roam about freely. So, in review: as to the woman who sat on the toilet for an estimated two (2) years and did not rise; the seat itself, as would have been the tank and bowl, was fixed.

These kinds of things happen when there is not proper medical care for people with these kinds of issues. Not to mention most of the time Dr.'s want money up front before they will help you or even see you, so even if he did ask for help it would not have surprised me if he would have gotten any in the first place as it sounds like they don't have the resources to pay for these types of extensive treatments being there is obviously mental, physical therapy, surgical (How much did it cost these people to have that toilet seat removed from her body?)They will be billed and who knows what ever else they will be charged with. Bottom line- it took something major like this before they would have helped these people without money up front anyways.
This coming from a person who took care of her family after a head on car crash that left three family members in need a numerous therapy's and prescriptions and numerous treatment plans, but none that were affordable. With insurance that covered 80%, my responsible portion was over $400,000.00. This causing my 4 year old daughter and my husband to NOT get the many treatments plans I was told that were needed for them.
They were not married so there is only so much he would have been able to do anyways- 16 years or not, especially if if he is challenged as well. Here are two more people that are in need of medical/health insurance and care.

What ever happened to people having a responsibility to themselves? Just because someone has mental issues doesnt mean they cant make decisions for themselves. I dont think the boyfriend has any blame in this situation. You cant force someone to do something they dont want to do and if she didnt want help... she's an adult! I'm an EMT and we cannot force people into the ambulance even if they obviously need it because everyone in this country has individual rights to make decisions for themselves!
Some additional info: A bed sore, also known as decubitus ulcer, can start from a bruise or from tissue damage due to sitting in the same position for as little as 2 hours. This is why elderly people in care homes get them. They are not moved enough to keep up their already poor circulation, probably do not have the appropriate nutrition, and a lot of times just wont comply with nursing home staff.
So yes, this woman needs help, but you cant force her to get it!

I am, however, very concerned for this woman's mental and physical health. True about the toilet being dirty and possibly moldy. All of the moisture from the bowl and tank alone must of reeked havoc on her skin! Imagine the infections she must have. It is also very possible that her agrophobia and depression may have stemmed from abuse as a child or from her boyfriend. Very, Very, Very sad story indeed.

First I'd like to say not only is this unbelievable but so sad.

Second... I don't agree with the boyfriend being arrested. Cleary on some level there has to be something wrong with him mentally to think in the first place that this type of relationship was ok. If he couldn't make the judgement call of not being with a person sitting in a bathroom for almost 2 years how can we expect him to seek help for it. He cared enough to bring her food and water and clothing. It would be different if he had locked her in there and then he would be at fault. But him not understand the situation therefor he didn't seek help, how can we blame him for that. We aren't blaming her for her sickness. I don't think we should blame him either. When you get two mentally ill or challenged people together and don't have any kind of supervision this is the result. Who I have a bigger problem with and would like more answers from would be the outside family members. There's a chance this couple didn't have any real friends. So you can't rely on that. But unles they are orphans they should have family. And there family you would think would be aware of any mental challeges this couple had. So they are the ones that should have been checking and staying on top of this. That is unles they are also mentally ill.

I have actually taken care of someone that had become stuck. the person had a stroke while on the toilet , someone came after not seeing her in a while , Terrible , Terrible wounds to take care of. Very painful during dressing changes. Long time healing! diligent nursing care with dressing changes twice a day. Lots of comforting , healing touch. I kept saying , I'm sorry , would actually bring tears to my eyes , and thing of her. She reassured me! what a great day when finally healed.

I am from Kansas, not far from the town that this happened. Her family did try to stop by to see her, but her boyfriend always told them that she was out running errands or out of town. And she did not sit on the toilet for two years, but she was in the bathroom that long. Her boyfriend put a lock on the outside of the bathroom and kept her locked in there. He only called the police after a visitor complained of the smell...he thought they were going to turn him in. After reading the comments about this, I am reminded how I had tried to get "mental help for a child,9 yrs old, End result was I was told I needed the counsiling for parenting skills. This "child" later at 20 years old, killed her own child. Also, after my later attacked my mother, he had her committed for 72 hours as a danger to herself. I still don't know how the finger prints aroud her neck were her fault. We turn a blind eye toward the slight mental issues, until someone gets stuck to a toilet seat or kills another.

I own a autobody shop. I got a call one day that there was a man who's car was disabled and could we tow him in and fix it. My driver called me when he located the car and said we had bigger problems than just a disabled car, the man was disabled and was living in his car and hadn't been out of it in no telling how long. This man probably weighed over 300lbs and ate, slept and pottied in the driver's seat. The car was full of feces, food wrappers and filth. We called an ambulance for him since he was unable to get out of the car, but he refused assistance. The sheriff wouldn't do anything so we ended up calling a priest to talk him out of the car and the last we heard he died in the hospital from bacterial infection from pressure sores. This case and the toilet case just shows that we as a nation have some very serious issues regarding mental health care. In Missouri, if you refuse medical attention, it cannot be forced upon you without a judge's order. So that woman would still be sitting on the pot here, because our local judge says there's no law against "bad decisions"........which is another topic altogether.

This story is no suprise. I treated a patient a few years back who became "stuck" to a bathtub. This process begins when someone sits or lays in one spot for a prolonged period of time and the skin breaks down into what is commonly called a decubitus or bedsore. The skin breaks down and becomes an open weeping sore because of prolonged pressure on that one area. These pressure sores are often life threatening requiring massive amounts of antibiotics, endless painful dressing changes, and perhaps skin grafts. They frequently become infected and do result in death. Christopher Reeves died as a result of infected bedsores. I'm amazed that people find this story amusing.

Her boyfriend, (and I do believe they both need help), was taking her clean clothes, food and water, for the two years she was in the bathroom. She had agoraphobia about leaving the ROOM, not the TOILET SEAT. I admit when I first read about it, I thought she had been on the seat for two years. Think about it, she couldn't leave the room, I still agree with most that help should have been called in the first few weeks. No one knows but them, what the exact circumstances were to make her retreat to the bathroom, and stay, but I hope the hospital can help both of them.

Please, can we have some input from a physician or nurse? My guess is that this unfortunate woman wasn't "fused" to the toilet seat by her skin "growing" onto it, but by the pus/oozing/crusting from dead tissue that certainly must have occurred. You cannot remain stationary in ANY position for days/weeks without your skin starting to break down("decubitus", aka "bed sores")and becoming necrotic--aka, DEAD (that's one of the reasons people confined to bed, quadraplegics, etc. must be turned or repositioned several times a day)...I'm guessing she has some terrible wounds/nerve damage etc. and is being hospitalized to care for that, not to mention her mental status. The fact that she never left the home, much less the toilet or bathroom for 2 yrs while another person lived there is shocking and perplexing.

I myself was a victim of chronic & severe, physical, emotional and sexual abuse as a young child and teen. I endured this abuse from family members and my parents. I learned to cope with this abuse through a variety of means & methods. As a very young child, I became introverted and refused to speak. As I got older, food became my hiding place & my shield from others. During my teen years, drugs and alcohol numbed the pain I could no longer endure. At 16, I left my "house of horrors" to live where I thought I was safer than at home, on the streets. I learned how to hide-in-plain-site.
I can relate very closely to what this poor woman must have felt. This bathroom became her "safe place".
As a young adult, I alienated myself from my family and others I felt were "unsafe" and I became very depressed. Over time I began to get paranoid. I suffered from agoraphobia for 4 yrs until I was finally able to reach out to a great mental-health therapist and get the help I needed.
It takes great courage and determination to overcome life-long mental illness, especially when thrust upon you by the cruel and inhumane treatment and abuse of the adults who were supposed to love and nurture you as an infant and young child. (The article did say she was abused as a child, did it not?) Nevertheless, many of us out there live with these emotional scars. Some of us are healing and some are still searching for that path to recovery.
I was also FORTUNATE enough to have the "medical insurance" that would cover an "eating-disorder treatment center" so I could get help with that disease as well. I am now happily on the path to good health and recovery from my disease.

YES, YOU HEARD ME RIGHT! DISEASE!

I am very sure that the "ignorant" are not schooled in the medical issues surrounding "obesity", "anorexia", or "bulimia". All of these eating disorders are "diseases".

SO PLEASE!! ALL OF YOU, who pre-judge the mentally & emotionally ill, or those with weight issues, whether they be "petite" or "obese", THERE ARE ALWAYS REASONS BEHIND THEIR STORIES! If this was MY DAUGHTER and her boyfriend kept giving me the runaround, for 2 yrs or even 3-4 weeks, I would have called the police MYSELF. Why, if what you say about the padlock on the door IS TRUE, didn't Officer Whipple mention that in his interview?

Pat Bollinger, the woman's aunt, said she calls daily to the hospital to ask how Babcock is doing and asks every day to talk to her. Babcock agreed to talk to her only once for about 10 minutes. During that one call, Babcock spoke little and mostly listened as Bollinger recounted happy family memories about swimming, camping and boating, from the year Pam lived with them in AZ during the 5th grade.
"I didn't bring up anything about her bathroom ordeal," Bollinger said. "I just let her know how much I loved her and cared for her."
No other family members have been allowed to see her at the hospital, they know little of her medical condition except she spends much of her time sleeping in the ICU.

~~Now here is my question.~~ Where has Auntie Pat been for the past 2-3 years, especially if she loves Pam so much? HUH? She seems to know how to pick up the phone pretty good now that Pam is all over the media. Auntie Pat is making statements to the press and telling them how concerned she is for Pam health and welfare, and how she is calling the hospital everyday but Pam won't take her calls anymore... (hmm I wonder why?) ...Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Pat hasn't shown much concern since...hmmm...5th grade!

(for DeeDee) Nationalized health care would not be a guarantee that such a thing would not happen here, nor is it our "right" as citizens of this country to have our health care systems nationalized. The issue of nationalized health care is unrelated to this tragic story.

It is folly to view a nationlized system for health care as a magic bullet that fixes all that is wrong with our current system, which by the way still features the highest standard of health care the world has ever seen! Tort reform is much more to the point, and long overdue. We should try that before we gut the system and replace it with a beaurocratic nightmare such as a centralized system.

Also, I agree that the boyfriend would be culpable to a degree here, it is certainly neglect on one level or another, however I feel his is beyond judgement here due to his own limited capacity to understand what was going on, the implications and what he could have done about it. Sounds to me like he was treating her as an adult, and she did not want the police or doctors involved, so he felt like he was adhering to her wishes, or even her instructions?

The real problem here people is that there is no recourse for people like these. There is no government-sponsored agency who would care for them and no system that would step in to ensure their recovery from the mental illness that obviously plagues them both. The centralized system touted in DeeDee's thread would only add layers of beaurocracy that would make our health care system much worse than it is for many, many years before it would settle down into anything that could be construed as beneficial to consumers.

I don't find being stuck to a toilet seat all that odd. For that long is odd, I'll grant you that, but have heard of people getting stuck to the seat of those soft seats after only a short time. They said when getting up it felt like their skin was being ripped off. Soft seats might be comfy but that plastic will stick to your skin in under an hour making it painful to pull yourself off of it. I'm guessing that was the type toilet seat this woman was stuck to. for those who want comment and not see the whole story. If he had been bringing her water food and fresh clothes then he apprently did not know that she ahd not left the toilette in some time. how many help agencies deal with a prob. like that. As for the commendecation part of you what would have done. If this much time and energy spent was spent talking other things such as hunger and homelessness in our own citys How much futher could we be about preventing such atrosities as this. Of the ppl. that took time to respond (500) a few 2 or 3 hrs a wkk at your local resthome or housebound people results in 7500 ppl. beening checked on weekly 500 is um what a such small part of a percentage of our populatin that we could effectivly take care of every sick, disabbled person in this country plus at least half or more of the world. This story promted me to do as one person said I will make a effort to go and see every older or special persons that I know. Ya'll keep blogging and talking I'll go and see if I can save someone else from this fate!

This woman must have had tremendous mental illness to not get up off of open pressure sores. She must have been in alot of pain. She is mentally ill but who is REALLY sick here is the boyfriend. He's the sick jerk who left her there to suffer- in my opinion, a much greater problem is his cruelty. She can get on drugs and hopefully get her brain chemistry back in alignment, he will always be a jerk.

This is one of the strangest stories I've ever read . I feel sorry for both of them. LOVE IS STRANGE... if she was not being held against her will.- and she made the choice to "Live in the bathroom"... she obviously had a few "problems" prior to her retreat. Thank God .. the man cared enough about her to cater to her . I imagine that for him he just kept on.. thinking "tomorrow" she would emerge... and the days turned into weeks, the weeks into months, etc. (No different for hopeful abused females..) He should have called someone before she became one with the toilet seat.(?) My qestion is : Didn't anyone miss her ? Family members ; co-workers ? Bottom line -she disappeared for 2 years. If she had a life of any kind... even with boyfriend's help- did nobody else miss her ? -Ask ?'s ?

Don't blame the boyfriend. He's probably a simple guy from a rural background that works, lives within his means and takes care of his own. Never asks anybody for anything and deals with his situations as best he can. Only when it got to the pont where he thought that he could not handle it (not your point or my point but his point) did he seek help. As usual, the help he sought (from the sheriff, and people in general) tries to punish him. He's probably experienced that before, which is why it was his last resort.

Well, one thing to be said is this. I read some comments that this only happens in America or only happens in Kansas and those people think we're backwards. Well, there is news that comes out of other countries that some people consider backwards so give us Kansans a fricking break. We're not all hicks and we do not deserve that title. Second of all, from reading the article, she chose to stay in there and the boyfriend did ask her to come out. He kept her fed and clothed but she has her rights and if she did not want to come out, there is nothing he could do. Getting help sooner would have helped the poor woman but if he has mental issues, things do not click in the right spots at all times so he deserves a break. I hope that both of them are able to get help and are able to work thru the situation.

This is truly a sad story. I had a sister who had mental illness issues for quite some time before she died. I always wonder to myself, "what happened to make a person that way?". I don't know, most times it's abuse...but sometimes it's not. I just guess some people are born that way.

What saddens me, as part of society, is how many people on here want someone held accountable, like the boyfriend, who attorneys would probably argue had no legal responsibility.
It's all about who is liable and who should've done this or that or who is suing who.

Ok, well let me clear things up ... if you read the article correctly it states that she lived in the bathroom for two years and law enforcement states they estimate that she was on the toilet for 3-4 weeks. Obviously there are some mental problems involved in both their lives. So essentially neither of them can be to blame. A sain person would have interjected much sooner. People need to stop being ignorant and always looking for someone to point the finger at. I'm sure that this young woman will now get the help she needs. Everything happens for a reason, as horrible as this experience must have been for both of them i'm sure that there has been something to learn from. You know, an eye opener ... when people are mentally ill, they don't always recognize this issue and need an outside source to say,"Hey, there's a problem here, you could use some help to try and straighting this out." Some people are resistent and some are accepting of this. That's what free will is all about. As long as you have brought it to their attention, then it's up to them to make a choice.

As I read all the comments that have been posted here, it's far too obvious that people are so eager to judge each other and play Monday-morning quarterback. This poor woman has now had her 15 minutes of fame - or notoriety? - and will have to carry that burden for the rest of her life. I agree with Kimena Girling (3/14/08) that something should be done to those responsible for the mental state Pam is in. Unfortunately it seems that society is too concerned with the civil liberties of criminals than the victims. As for the boyfriend - he is being publicly chastised for not notifying anyone sooner about Pam. Maybe we should consider the fact that he probably thought he was doing the right thing for her. He was making sure she had food, clothing & companionship. In his own mind I'm sure his intentions were very well-meaning. I don't feel that he should be held personally responsible for the entire situation. He hopefully will receive the help he needs to bring some understanding to the circumstances. I truly hope that both of them can escape the stigma that will surely attach itself becasue of this story.

SHE needs to be in a mental facility, not him. Nowhere in this atricle does it state that this guy has any mental problems himself. You all only assume that because he didn't call the authorities right away. Did you ever stop to think that maybe she told him that she didn't want any help? As a guy, I surely know when a woman sets her mind to something, she is going to do it. At least he was giving her food and liquids. So I don't think that this guy should even have been put on probation. He did nothing wrong. It was her choice, so SHE needs to suffer the consequences, plain and simple.

As i read thur all these comments i notice most ppl dont have a clue.they say they should had seek help but from whom? fact is if your poor and have no kids (single is even wrose)you cant get health care so they could seek no help and without doctors no disabliblty the man got 6 months in jail for peeing outside (since pam was on the tolite)she will now get the care she needs the man will most likely be homeless now and on the streets.(rented or owned makes no differnce since they dont own the land the landlord will take the proprety and all there stuff)i myself am mentally handicapped and phiscally disable yet can get no help deniened ever time when i apply for oregon health plan with no reason given.all he could had done was call the police but they wouldnt offer any help yes they could have called 911 and have a amubluce come but that would cost money who would pay for it? so he did nothing wrong ? well maybe but who here knew that could happen? she ate and slept there and was happy plus was making money on the side with a web cam who are we to judge?

As a very pierced person, I can attest to skin growing around things. I have seven piercings, one through my hand, and they heal faster than you'd think...and if you aren't that smart or have a bad piercer that used the wrong gauge (thickness) or length, the bar will pull in and disappear. Either you leave it or have your piercer take a scalpel to you.

And toilet seats, even though they don't look it, can be porous (have tiny holes) and skin might grasp onto that. Wonder if it was a wooden seat? That might exlain things.

I think both these individuals should be evaluated for mantal issues-- clearly, they bth have a few.

And having a strong stomach, Id like pics too. This stinks of urban legend...but at the same time it feels eerily real. Ick.

After reviewing the comments, the only appropriate observation is that this truly is a sad story. What is clear, however, is the need for the mental health care these two individuals deserve. As for a photo, well, yeah, my morbid curiosity kinda kicked in too. I'm with her on that one.
