My wife has a distant cousin with this disorder, and I remember being shocked and a bit scared when I first saw the boy. He doesn't have (what appears to be) the short black hair this illustration shows. He has longish brown hair and if anything looks like someone getting ready for a werewolf movie.

He's learned to cope, and is in all appearances a completely normal boy, except for the hair.
