My mother, who passed away in '92, told me that the same thing happened to my grandmother. Apparently, my grandmother was pregnant with baby #10 at the time and witnesses one of her other children struck by a drunk driver. She says the baby turned to stone. I was never sure about it. Sounds like it's plausible. Not that the baby turned to stone because of the horrifyig accident my g-ma witnessed, but I guess it could have happened. I'm going to ask one of my aunts. Interesting.

I saw a documentary on Discovery Health and they actually performed surgery to deliver the baby. The baby had calcified and turned hard and grew to her insides. That is why it is called a stone baby. I heard about something like this to a woman in India. (discovery channel or something) A woman who got pregnant in the 1940's had the same thing. She had the baby cut out after about 50 or so years. she knew she was pregnant but she had complications. But at the time in India, no one could do such a surgury, so they just let her be. In the 1970's or 80's they operated on her and got it out.

They had a show about this on either discovery health or TLC. It was about an elderly woman in the Middle East, I think. She had gone full term with her pregnancy as a young woman and had started the labor process. Eventually the labor stopped and no baby. The baby calcified and wasn't removed until almost 50 years later when she started complaining of severe abdominal pain. Turns out that the pregnancy had been in the abdominal cavity.

Stone babies dont get delivered, usually a medical reason precipitates surgery and when doctors believe the patient has a mass or tumor and that mass is dissected that is how the stone babies are delivered. There was a story of a woman in a 3rd world country who knew she was pregnant and nearly full term the child quit moving and never came out, the doctors told her she must have never been pregnant. As she aged and medical care became better her family sent her to get looked at because she had such a large stomach and it was getting painful, come to find out it was the baby she knew she was pregnant with 50 years earlier.

this actually happened to me. i was in the early stages of my pregnancy and no where near full term. but the baby died and just didn't expel and 4 weeks later my doctor figured it out. but they definitely didn't document it in medical literature. i knew it didn't happen often but only 290 times ever? that seems odd.

There was actually a show on tv (TLC I think) about a woman that had been pregnant for almost 50 years. She had had contractions and was told that they would have to cut the baby out of her, she was too frightened to have this done after witnessing another mother die from having the same surgery done so she chose to do nothing. The contractions eventually stopped, the baby stopped moving and it went to "sleep". Her village thought she was cursed because she had a "sleeping baby". I saw this on a documentary. They actually found the calcified baby when they operated on her. It was not like a delivery where she got labour pains or anything, however her abdomen was unusually large and she did have some sort of pain (not sure if it was continuous pain that occurred periodically over the years or just an instant pain). So that prompted the doctors to operate on her. Funny thing from the documentary the woman said she knew that there was a baby inside of her all these years. Her recollection of the incident was that she went to the hospital and upon hearing another patient screaming from another room she decided to leave the hospital and the baby died inside her and she said to herself that she would just let it sleep and that's what she did. Let it sleep for some odd 60 years or so until..... They actually showed the calcified baby of course deformed looking on the documentary. Interesting! I saw this story on Discovery Health. They actually removed the baby by surgical means. The baby died in the woman and because she did not deliver it began to calcify (harden) inside of her to protect her body from being infected by it. Although she was sick she was not as sick as she could have been because of the calcification. The baby had grown into her organs and it was a rather lengthy surgery for them to remove the baby.

I worked at a convalecent center in 1982 and many of the patients were elderly woman. One slim lady in her 80's had a very pregnant looking belly. It looked as though she were 5 months along. She developed stomache problems so the doctor ordered xrays. A stone fetus was discovered.

Acutally, Mimi Cary, the reference in the article that you're referring to was to one that happened in 1582. The original paragraph said that the Chinese woman the story was built around "recently delivered a child"! 1582 is by no means recent. I do agree with Teri Jo though. The article goes through hurdles discussing the phenomenon, but seemed to use the Chinese mother who'd lost her child in 1948 to build a story about the phenomenon. The article only said that she didn't have the money to have the dead fetus removed. I'd be curious to know what prompted the delivery myself...but I guess that just wasn't interesting enough for them to bother to print!

Watch TLC/ Discovery. They showed the removed stone fetus and showed it for those visually inquisitive minds. Its amazing what people endure. In the case they showed, the woman was simply too old to get around and had this huge hump. Hard as stone, who'd a guessed a calcified fetus! The documentary some are refering to was about another woman who was middle eastern. This is a different woman who is Chinese. On the doc. they said the leaving after hearing the other woman die is what saved the Middle Eastern woman due to the hospitals lack of knowledge and ability to diagnoise and properaly operate on her back then. She after her child quit moving she belived a folklore that her child was something called a "sleeping baby" and her and her husband adopted 4 or 5 children. It wasn't until she began experiencing pain that one of her sons brought her to the hospital and they discovered the stone baby.

Ok so just to clarify, the article says Madame Chatri was the name of the lady who was found to have a stone fetus during an autopsy in 1582. The main lady in the article, Huang Yijun, was said to have "given birth" to her stone baby, recently. Although the article does not give a date they lead you to believe it was recent. I think this must have been aweful. And how sad that she has felt sick for 60 years with no releif and now that she is nearing the end of her life she finally expells the stone baby that has made her ill.

I saw the documentary on TLC about this - very odd, very creepy.

Actually this is rare but it does happen, moreso known in other countries. We are realy blessed to be where modern medicine is here in the USA. I read about this as a studied as a nurse and saw one case in a biography I did on a lady that was 78 years of age in one of the Asian countries. She carreid the "stone" baby for 48 years. Direct tv has a documentary on it, so check it out for more details. Its called "Pregnant for 48 years".

I heard about one of these. The woman always talked about her son and how he never left her or went off to war like the other mothers.

I happened to experience a surgery on Oct. 31 /08 where an actopic pregnancy was removed from my ovary. I thought it was a normal pregnancy but went to take an altrasound to make sure that everything was ok and my husband & me were caught by surprize cause it seemed as though it was a tubal pregnancy and were convinced it to be very dangerous and decited to have the surgery and were caught by surprize again along with the doctors. The fetus was sent away to be tested and came back as a actopic pregnance. I would say it had looked tike stone even though I didn't feel it myself. Thank God for the great doctors we had.

this is really interesting I herd about a case on a documentry is was really bizarre... calling a band after it is also interesting but I think you people should have a little more respect. What did they call it? rocky thats the funniest thing i've herd today lolz, but seriously I feel sad for that woman carrying a baby she would never see take it first steps and knowing that the baby was dead and she could do nothing about it yeh thats sad :( hope that doesn't happen to me if I deside I want kids in the future.

Being pregnant for 9 months was hard enough but over 50 years? wow .. When the ob/gyn tells you about all the things that COULD happen during a pregnancy, they never tell you this one .. and that would be one that I would haved obsessed about .. a rock hard belly!

I've never heard of the stone baby thing before but it is intriguing.

I can imagine the physical pain that must have gone along with this for so long, but the emotional turmoil of something like this for such a long period of time must have been awful.

I personally went through a baby dyeing in the womb several years back that didn't actually miscarry on it's own, and just the few weeks I went through waiting to see if the baby would pass naturally and the waiting for the operation to remove the remains of the fetus were awful. Knowing that you're carrying around your dead baby is a truly devastating experience. I don't know how the woman managed emotionally for so long.
