I got c-diff last winter after going to the hospital for a double staph infection, I was so sick from the staph infection and then to get c-diff on top of it was unbelievable. Mine was cured by the first round of vancomycin because I got nausea from Flagyl so bad I couldn't eat anything ... but like you stated in the second to the last paragraph, you are so sick that you will try anything to get better and there is no "ick effect" when you are that sick.

I have had CDiff. I had contactacted it through taking a antibiotic for a bladder infection. The antibiotic killed the infection but killed everything else!! The CDiff. only took one round of antibiotics to clear up but the gut took about a yr. and a half before things really got back to normal. Now, I don't have diarhea but I'm not regular. The CDiff was a very bad disease and on top of that I suffered with Gall Bladder disease. I keep hoping that I don't need antibiotics!!

Is there a reason not to use cultured yogurt to accomplish the same thing?? Definitely it is much cheaper, faster to obtain, and no ick factor, unless you just don't like yogurt. My daughter had multiple rounds of ear infections as a baby, and antibiotics led to yeast infections in her each time. We figured out starting her on yogurt when we started the antibiotic dramatically reduced the infections. I realize C diff and yeast infections are two separate infections, but sometimes we don't see the practical applications of what we already have before us.

I have microscopic collagenous colitis, discovered when I had a colonoscopy 5 years ago when I was very, very sick.. It may seem a bit, (OK, a more than a bit) disgusting, but if it works..! I'm an RN, and I have seen some strange things work. A couple of examples, leech therapy for limb and finger re-attachments (the leeches secrete an anti-coagulant and remove the stagnant blood), and maggot therapy for non-healing wounds (the maggots will only eat dead tissue, and actually improve infection rates.)

My mom had surgery on November 1, 2007 and died on November 10, 2007 from a C. Diff infection acquired during/following a surgical procedure. My dad took care of her while she was at home (not knowing she had this infection) and was in and out of the hospital this May with a C. Diff infection.

I think there is a hidden epidemic going on in the US. This generation is the first full generation to have had the benefit of antibiotics and have children of their own. So if a mother has wiped out her good intestinal flora with antibiotics and gives birth, the child also does not have the benefit of good intestinal flora. If I had known about this a year ago I would have put on some Depends and flown to Duluth in a heartbeat. I contracted C. diff right around News Year and did several rounds of Flagyl to no avail. Well, yes....sounds disgusting, something that clearly folks wouldn't do by choice, etc.

However, as a board-certified veterinary technician, I can affirm that there are many situations /species where fecal ingestion is considered to be normal and necessary, or at the very least, not unexpected. As such- this is unusual for human medicine, but not without medical merit (obviously, based on results).

Specifically: young foals (baby horses/ponies)(need to!) eat their mother's feces in the early weeks of life in order to populate their GI system with 'the good bugs'.

Rabbits are required to do so for good health as well. Specifically: the GI tract of a rabbit excretes two things: (normal, brown) feces and (green) cecotropes. While cecotropes are technically feces, they are (more importantly) vital components for the rabbit to ingest for correct vitamin assimilation by the rabbit's digestive system.
Yeah, I know...not exactly my kind of appetizer, but Mother Nature is a wonderous thing.

I learned about stool transplant shortly after my father died from C-Diff. His got so severe, and in a very short time I might add; the spores broke through the wall of his colon and into the bllod stream producing Septicemia. It was a horrible time of suffering for him, and for us his children as we watched helplessly. Most definitely it would be worth trying...we would have for Dad if we would have known of it sooner. It's a shame the doctors treating him couldn't have been open to trying it...seems they probably had heard about it...maybe it wasn't approved there in that hospital. To all those suggesting yogurt and acidophilus as a possible help. You should only use these after the round of antibiotics because they will have a lessening effect on the antibiotic and might actually make it that you would need more antibiotic because of it. You will notice on the prescription it will say not to use dairy or ant acids while taking your antibiotic.

So good try. I do eat yogurt and drink acidophilus milk after taking antibiotic.
But only after I am done with the round. Do understand that if you take Zpac that Zpac only taken for five days does work in your system for the normal 10 days. So hold off on yogurt and dair products.

I am a student nurse getting ready to take my boards. This is odd to hear that it could cure such a debilitating infection. My mother almost died from c diff 2 yrs ago. I wanted to strangle her doctor for not admitting her for dehydration. For over a week I had to take my mother in for 2 liters of fluid because she was dehydrated, finally I protested and said either she was to be admitted or I was on the phone to the news stations and my attorney. My wife died of c-diff. I got it later because I'd been taking care of her with cracked bleeding hands & the spores got into my blood and settled in my colon. The reason yogurt won't work is that it does not contain all the appropriate bacteria, nor is there enough of it. 40% of fecal mass is bacteria. Using yogurt would require a huge volume of it all at once, because if it was eaten in a normal amount every day, it would be out-competed by the C. diff. For the same reason it can't be cultured in a lab - the precise mix and volume would be difficult to duplicate and very difficult to grow in an artificial environment. The best way to grow fecal coliforms is in feces, in its natural habitat.
Probiotics, things like large volumes of L. acidophilus, might help slightly, but only repopulate a single organism, not the complex community of microorganisms found in a natural state.
And no, Detroit, it's not related to restless leg syndrome; you clearly are a person fortunate enough to have never suffered from either of these conditions and thus scoff at it because if it sounds strange to your mind it can't possibly be true. Not sure what any of it has to do with Sarah Palin, nor is it stupid to treat a medical problem in a way that is effective and safe. While strong antibiotics like vancomycin and metronidazole are used to treat C. diff, they also wipe out the body’s good flora, which usually keep C. diff in check. Eating probiotic-fortified foods, like yogurt, likely won’t help treat C. diff –related issues because they don’t sustain enough micro-organisms (about 1 billion) to really make an impact on intestinal health for chronic conditions like C. diff.

Probiotic supplements can be helpful with this infection, particularly for the many people who suffer C.diff relapses after drug treatment. A yeast-based probiotic called Saccharomyces boulardii (commonly sold under the brand name Florastor) when combined with the use of drugs like metronidazole (Flagyl) or vancomycin, are effective in reducing additional recurrence of C. diff. A recent meta-analysis of 31 studies compiled and published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology concluded that S. boulardii is the only probiotic that is effective in fighting recurrent C. diff-associated disease, and an article in the March 2006 issue of Gastroenterology and Hepatology showed that use of S. boulardii provided an almost 50 percent decrease in subsequent recurrence among patients who suffered recurrent CDAD symptoms.

Florastor can also be taken during a course of antibiotics to keep the intestines fortified. Because Florastor is a yeast and not a bacteria, it cannot be killed by the antibiotics. Columnist Dr. Mitchell Hecht recently touched on this subject in one of his articles. The treatment is new to me, but the name (fecal transplants) is awful to the patients.
May I suggest another name - the whole procedure will be called "Gold infusion through endoscopy" and it can be done under sedation. I am sure that patient will accept that better than using fecal material through GI tube.
(In China the poop is sometimes referred as "gold" because of its color!)

Please people do not make jokes about this awful disease. My 86 year old mother has had recurring c-diff infections(she's been in the hospital 9 times since February). She has Alzheimer's and is unable to speak or do anything (she's like an 8-month old baby). My sister and I have taken care of her for 10 straight months trying to keep this infection at bay (she's been on Vancomycin this whole time). She also suffers from recurring Urinary Tract Infections which cause her to be on antibiotics, which make the c-diff infection come back over and over again. This is not something to joke about. I wish my mother could've had this therapy. Right now, she is receiving hospice care at home and I will no longer place her in the hospital no matter what. I had severe IBSD for 18 years. If a doctor had suggested this therapy to me I would have tried it. If I had c. diff. I would try it in a heartbeat. I will never go through the torment of having severe diarrhea again for any reason without trying every treatment possible. I think the suppository method might be more easily accepted by most people,however, if you are having diarrhea every 15 minutes, it wouldn't stay in long enough to do much good. As for yogurt, it doesn't have all the flora and fauna you need for proper digestion.

My son was 4 when he was sick with CDiff. It was horrible to watch my baby be in such pain and not being able to do anything about it. He got it from repeated antibiotics rounds for sinus infections. We almost lost him. The docs didnt know what was wrong with him (as children usually dont get end up with it). They even took out his appendix trying to figure out what was wrong with him. It took 10 days in the hospital, and 2 rounds of Flagel. He is almost 7 now and still has side effects from the CDiff. I think if I had heard about this with him. As still gross as it sounds..if it would have helped my baby..I would have done it.

I was hospitalized for over a month and a half, after being diagnosed with a form of "flesh-eating" bacteria. The treatment required a couple of operations and continuous IV antibiotics. Geesh, I would imagine that if a cure was as simple as eating some yogurt (Dannon Activia), there would be no need for the fecal transplants! I can't believe that's even been asked.

C.Diff is a very painful disease, and people should be more aware of the harmful effects of taking antibiotics when they're not needed. I know lots of times people take them when they are needed, but it's also true that many doctors will prescribe them to children because the mothers think the kid needs them... when they don't. Or, patients think they need them to get better, so the doc will prescribe them because it's just easier to do that than to try to explain that they won't work for all illnesses to someone who insists on taking them. I won't take them, nor give them to my children, unless we know for sure we have a bacterial illness... and it's gotta be pretty bad too. And, we're all healthier than we ever were back when we took antibiotics every time we got a little cough or cold. I'm go glad doctors are now warning people of the risks of taking them when they're not needed. We need more doctors in the world who care enough about their patients to take the time, and put in the effort, to try to explain things like this.

Sad to see all the jokes about this too, by the way. Obviously, this is a wonderful solution to a problem that might otherwise kill so many people! Way to go to those who "discovered" it's effects!!

You can personally debate gross or not gross to yourself, but you also have to recognize that there comes a time when you just need to grow up and acknowledge that in medicine what needs to be done needs to be done. Clostridium difficile (the full name) is just one of the Clostridial bacterial species that are particularly nasty and hard to treat. Both humans and virtually all animals can suffer from this type of disease after treatment with antibiotics or just after a stressful medical event that damages the gut and leads to changes in the normal flora. Repopulating the gut with the digesta (or feces) from another donor is something that is far from new, and is practiced commonly in animal medicine with usually good results. When all other treatments fail it works just as well as others on this board have attested to. And as far as replacement with probiotics goes (as from yogurt) I would have to argue that the results are not as consistently reliable and effective.

With many of the probiotic yogurts, only about 10% of the probiotics survive passage through your stomach acid to still be alive by the time it reaches your intestines. My guess for the reason the doctors use feces instead of yogurt is that the probiotics in feces might be more likely to survive stomach acid than the probiotics in yogurt. Also, the tube directing the feces probiotics to the stomach not only avoids the "ick" factor of having to actually eat it, but it makes the probiotics more like to survive because of bypassing the initial digestive processes that happen in the mouth and throat.

In March of 2002, my wife had surgery to replace her right knee. She was in the hospital for about a week. Shortly after returning home, she developed a thick, extremely foul smell diarrhea that looked alot like crumbled, overcooked ground beef. Then I started having it. While she got better, I came down with what I thought was some form of intestinal grippe, and was sick for about 2 weeks. After I got better, the diarrhea stopped, but a week or so later, it resumed. I've had it every day since, now seven years.

Every test known to doctor has been given, and nothing shows up. I even saw a parasite specialist in New York City who found nothing, yet he gave me runs [puns] on two different medicines, neither of which did any good.

I am 49 year old, a white male, in otherwise good health. After this length of time, one would think the underlying condition causing my "megarrhea" would either resolve, or get worse, in which case it would become known. Neither has happened, and the diarrhea is as bad as ever. Along with it comes incontinence of the bowel, a very unpleasant thing to experience in traffic, or during the winter with howling, bitter cold winds blowing snow into huge roadside drifts. More than once and more than twice, I've found myself at the edge of the highway, struggling to make my way into the the bushes before it all comes flowing out. I now travel with a porta-potty in the trunk of my car. I've lost my bowel in front of a client, and on one occasion the stench was so bad my wife put a pair of $150 dress slacks into the garbage rather than wash them. It doesn't matter where I go, what I eat or drink, or what I do. Immodium relieves the symptoms, and I buy this in bulk off the Internet. A supply of 700 pills usually lasts about 60 days. Business meetings, church, social functions, and romantic moments are not places for this to happen, but the bowel knows no time or place. Without the drug, anything I eat runs from mouth to anus in about 30 minutes. The stools always smell amazingly putrid, they firm up a bit with the medicine, but are never normal looking either.

I'm wondering if I have. C. difficile. I'm often totally exhausted, and drink two gallons or more each day to replace lost fluids. At this point, I would gladly undergo a fecal transplant if it would put an end to this infernal suffering. Several years ago, I offered $5,000 cash to anyone who could cure the problem; a couple of people took on the challenge, without success. I can't afford this now, as the condition caused me to lose my job in 2005. Today I can work part time, but am on disability. Straying away from a toilet is always risky business, as I often have no more than one or two minutes of warning before it start. An anti-spasmodic, combining phenobarbital with the toxin belladonna, a derivative of the deadly nightshade mushroom, helps with the cramping. It helps, does not eliminate agonizing pain that sometimes comes with the attacks, especially if I'm trying to hold it. I dread having a police officer catch me roadside, or attempting to address an episode while driving. I dread having an event in front of a client again as I did in 2005, when a homeowner refused to let me use his toilet. 2 liters of filth poured out on the landing between his first and second floor; I was afraid he thought I did it on purpose and even more afraid that if he had a gun, he just might use it, or call the police. Instead, he gave me a trash bag and 2 rolls of paper towels, obliged me to clean it up, and threw me out of his house. I drove home in my underwear, sitting on a plastic sheet.

Flora replacement programs have helped only slightly. The cause remains a mystery. I've resigned myself to living with this for the rest of my life. HELP!?!!
