Our dog has warts, one on his neck and one on his leg. He's a Newfoundland and Rottweiler mix. He's quite furry, so the warts are hard to see, but easy to feel. Could he pass the virus to us or can humans only get it from humans?

In general (though there are certainly exceptions to the rule) most diseases are species specific, with many viruses out there ONLY being able to live/recreate themselves in a certain type of animal because those conditions in that animal type are the best for it to grow (perfect body temperature, right body chemistry, etc.). According to this veterinary site (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_canine_viral_papillomas.html) dog warts are not contagious to humans. But not all skin bumps are warts. Your dog may actually have some type of a variety of skin cancers that can be either slow growing and non life threatening or might be a nasty type of cancer called a Mast tumor that is extremely aggressive and fatal if not caught early on. I ran across an article (http://www.thedogdaily.com/doggiewoggie/Health/canine_skin_cancer/index.html) on a dog site that gives some basic descriptions about what to look for in dog skin bumps (lots of cancer websites are very heavy into the medical jargon). The interesting part was in the comments section of that page where several posters found out that what they thought were warts on their dog, actually turned out to be cancer, and what they thought was cancer, turned out to be warts. So if you're not sure about a bump and want to be certain about your pet's health, it's always best to have it checked out by a vet.

My MIL has tons of warts on her face and neck, some her her hands/arms and who knows where else. My husband recently got them from her and I hope our children don't get them. We've taken her in 6 times in less than 2 years to get them frozen off, but like the article says, they're like a bad weed. The dermatologist says she got them from her dog, which she did get them shortly after adopting a new dog, but I read online that you cannot get them from dogs because they're different from species to species. I try and make her wash her hands before she touches my babies, but don't know what else I can do.

I'm 52 and have not had warts since the 12th grade. I never was ridiculed or teased because i had them. Believe it or not, at the worse time in 11th grade, I had 36 on my left hand an 40 on my right. They were nowhere else on my body. In about 1973 the produce Compound W came out and I asked my mom and dad to buy some. I used it until all the warts were gone. It took about three months for the warts to completely dissappear and about 2 years for the scars to dissappear. (I picked the warts, while using this product, which you are not supposed to do). I'm engaged in a 2+ year battle with plantar warts on the bottom of my feet. Started with one large one on my right heel 15 years ago. i tried multiple times to get rid of it. All it did was make the wart mad - i got a 2nd wart next to the first. I started with the salicynic acid, freezing, etc. That ticked the wart off more - and 1 appeared on my left foot. As I went after that, more appeard in an arc around the first. At one time, I counted 13 separate plantar warts. I've managed to freeze off the 11 on my left foot, and the newest on my right foot. Still doing nightly battle with the original. I scrape it with a scalpel every couple of days, then sand it with an emery board until I get rid of as much as possible, then hit it hard with the liquid nitrogen. It's retreating, but very slowly.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news Anonymous in Seattle...but unless you figure out a way to bubble up your babies for the rest of their existence...I can practically guarantee you that they will be exposed to HPV on an almost daily basis for the rest of their life. You can easily contract the virus from someone who shows no symptoms. You likely make your MIL feel even worse about her condition than she already does...which most likely only further weakens her immune system and creates even more physically evident warts. Perhaps you would best be served to provide her a healthy dose of compassion and keep your babies properly nourished and physically fit...that would likely go much farther in keeping them away from the little bumps that plague many a folk...

There is a surgery option. My daughter had this done when the warts on her feet started spreading quickly. The surgery involves cutting a wart out and embedding it in the muscle on your foot. Had lots of warts on my knee as a kid. Tried all the stuff to get rid of them. Had a great uncle that got rid of them. Not sure how he did it. He would rub his hand on them for a short period and then say just don't think about them. Sure enough they went away. Did to several other family members as well. I had a wart on my foot as a kid. Dermatologist went through all the treatments, formaldehide patches, burning, freezing, cutting, etc, but it kept coming back, and fairly quickly, like within a few weeks to a month. Finally I got a radiation treatment and it went away and has been gone 40 years.

Podiatrist treated with Cantharidin is a chemical derived from the green blister beetle.

How It Works
Your health professional "paints" cantharidin on your wart and covers it with a bandage. This is generally painless. The cantharidin causes the skin under the wart to blister, lifting the wart off the skin. When the blister dries, the wart comes off with the blistered skin. You may feel some pain when the skin blisters. When you see your health professional again, he or she will remove the dead skin and the wart. If the wart isn't gone after one treatment, you may need another treatment.

From start to finish lasted about a week and a half based on the size of the area, was eaven more painful than the wart itself for a few days, but it worked the first time.

I've had plantar warts (mostly on my feet but sometimes on my hands)off and on for decades. To get rid of them when they first appear, take larger doses of Vitamin A for a short period of time. Too much Vitamin A can be toxic, so dont go crazy. You can Google this remedy for more information.

Sometimes they can also be scratched out if they are new and very small. You will have some tender/raw areas where they have been dug out, but within a few days it heals up and you're back to normal.

Go to the health food store and buy Grapefruit Seed Extract in liquid form. Put this on your warts every day and let it dry. It is a clear liquid. Do this every day for 3 weeks EVERY DAY. I had a common wart on my finger, which I would keep tring to get rid of with the wart removal products on the market. Finally I gave up and had a doctor remove it. He had to cut through several layers of skin to get rid of it, and it left a scar, but thank God it's gone. How I got it is beyond me. My best bet is at church (since I'm Catholic, we have the sign of peace where we shake hands), but the wart was on my left hand, so who knows.

The best wart cure ever is to make a mixture of baking soda and castor oil (ask your pharmacist), mix it in a plastic bowl with a plastic spoon until it reaches the "soft ball" stage, as in candy making. After every bath or shower put a small amount on the wart - even plantar warts - and cover with a band-aid. They will be gone in a week. This is a cure recommended by a famous American known as the "Sleeping Psychic" and has worked for everyone I know. Bathe, apply mixture, fresh bandage and poof! they are gone. They don't come back with this remedy, either.

I had a wart on the end of my big toe in 1969. I was eight or so. My grand father told me to 'swipe' a potato, from my mothers kitchen; and "Don't tell any one why you want it."
I did as he told me. He cut the potato in half, rubbed it on the wart, said something in French,(I wished I knew what it was.)

Two weeks, to the day, it fell off, on it's own, like it was never attached to me.

I've been plague by warts (plantar) on my feet for years. They haven't been painful, but I wanted them gone because they multiplied. My dermatologist said that I had the most he had ever seen. After trying tons of remedies (including a painful laser), I found a solution that works. I'm not a doctor, but working with my doctor, this solution got rid of my warts in less than a month (and most in 2 weeks).

This is what I did:

I used Salicylic Acid pads (Curad Mediplast was the brand - a pack of 25 2"x3" pads) on all the warts. I meticulously cut out little squares to put on all of the warts. Next, I taped over them with Hypafix (2"x10yards) tape. I generously applied the tape. I would wear this on my feet for a week without removing them (even shower in them). After a week, I would use the Ped Egg (a file) to remove all dead skin. Immediately after, I would take a shower and soak my feet while showering. After the shower, I would use a pumice to remove any leftover dead skin. I would definitely bleed at times, but scrape as much as you can. After all of this, I would let my feet air dry. Once completely dry, I would start the process all over and pad/tape my feet again. Eventually, the tape/scraping will expose the warts. After the warts were exposed, I dipped my feet twice a day in a Formaldehyde solution that I bought from my dermatologist. You mix 1 tablespoon of Formaldehyde with a pint of hot water. I mixed this in a caserole dish (that I bought a Kroger for $3). I would soak one foot at a time for 15 minutes twice a day. If a wart was exposed/bleeding, it definitely BURNED, as Formadlehyde is biohazardous, but it was well worth it. After dipping my feet for a week, I went back to the Salicyclic pads and I gave it another week. 1 week pads then 1 week soaking. I also was taking Cimetidine for 3 months. It's over the counter and took 800mg (2 400mg doses) a day. I'm not sure if that helped or not, but it's worth mentioning because it's a cheap otc drug. I literally got rid of 100's of warts in a matter of weeks. I hope this will help someone else from years of pain and suffering. I am still keeping a watchful eye on my feet, but I am SO happy they are gone!

I received a passed down talent/gift from my Dad, who received the talent from his Granddaddy. I had a huge seed wart on my finger, age 8 or 9 yrs old. My dad was tired of me chewing on it and said he "wanted to try something that Granddaddy Anderson did for him". He asked me if I was tired of it and I, of course said, yes. Fast forward to years later, my friend had a bleeding wart on her elbow. I told her the story and I "bought" her wart for a penny. It left within 2-3 months. I've experimented many times with this talent and have found out it works! I share the story, ask the questions and then buy the wart.
I researched on the 'net and found it was a Pennsylvania Dutch healing art.
One little girl at my school had hands covered with warts, it was so bad, warts upon warts. When I was "buying" the warts I kept telling her that she had to "believe", at first she said, yes, then after 17 cents, she was nodding, no. I told her, okay, I'll believe it for you. Sheesh, she left with a handful of pennies! When she came back to school after summer, the warts were gone, EXCEPT ONE! We laughed and I reminded her that she didn't believe, so she kept one. One way I have found that works extremely well (I haven't seen a wart resist it yet), is carrot. Shave a little bit of carrot off (sort of make a mush) and place it atop the wart. Cover with a band-aid. Change this 'dressing' every day. Apparently the acid in the carrot kills the wart. I had a woman who had quite a few painful warts on her hands, and they're all gone. She just had to endure a week or so of band-aids and slightly orange skin!

I do not remember the name of the bottle but it is small and cost around $20 and it's made specifically to remove warts. It may be a green or blue bottle. Similar to the fellow whose grandfather had him steal a potato, my grandmother would have you steal a bean (and no one must know!), then she'd break it in half, rub one half on the wart, then place both halves in the paper bag. She'd hand it to you (tightly closed), tell you not to open it, and throw it over your left shoulder under a waning moon. She'd caution you NOT to look back at it because spirits were eating the bean along with the wart and if you looked you'd anger them and they'd leave you with the wart. If you were to go back the next day, she'd say the bag would be empty and your wart would be on its way out.

I have 5 brothers and one sister. One of my brothers got a wart and spread it to me and 3 of my brothers as well as my sister. This gave us a chance to try almost every trick in the book. That said, it appears that the nail polish/crazy glue does help the wart to retreat. For added effect, use the freezing before applying the crazy glue/ nail polish. Don't cut it since this only seems to encourage it.

Just for laughs, in my home country, Guyana, the natives suggest putting gunpowder on it. One of my brothers recently had a wart reappear on the bottom of his foot. He decided to cut a trench around it and then put the gunpowder in it and light it - even though I've never heard the natives suggest this. He did this 3 times before my other brothers suggested doing in once more. They turned him on his stomach so he wouldn't be able to see what they were doing and used a blow torch instead with the gunpowder. He was really mad at them.

...Results still pending on the outcome of this treatment.

I had approx. 50+ small, flat-type warts on my hands for about 3+ years. It was awful! During that time, I was pregnant and nursing, and working hands-on with patients in an emergency department. I diligently hid my hands from patients with constant glove use. After I weaned my last child, the warts magically disappeared on their own. Multiple freezing and burning treatments at the dermatologist and over-the-counter treatments did nothing to help resolve the warts. I figure my immune system was simply over-taxed during this childbearing time of my life, and I finally was able to fight the virus after I stopped getting pregnant. (I had five pregnancies in seven years). I resigned to the idea that I was going to have the warts forever and thankfully, they are just a distant memory now.

To get rid of it I soaked my foot in hot water each night before bed long enough for it to look like a grape and then put Desenex foot powder in a sock and wore the sock to bed. As crazy as it might sound, duck tape is able to rid the body of warts. I read about it in a medical magazine (thinking it was a joke). However, it was recommended by several doctors (and works). People simply need to wash the area, pat it dry and then attach a piece of duck tape over the wart. Keep it covered...(replacing the tape whenever it becomes dirty)...for up to 6 weeks. Eventually, it will be gone and will never return.

I had a few on my neck area and I burned it with a red hot small screwdriver (just the tip) warmed up with the stove flame.

Just touch the wart with the tip of the screwdriver quickly a few times until is all gone... the wart turns white and then falls, haha, it was pretty cool and easy to do. Be careful not to touch your skin cause it hurts a little bit.

I had a cluster on my ring finger right where a ring would sit and I worried that I would never be able to wear a wedding ring when I grew up and got married. You bury the string in the yard and then when the string rots your warts will be gone. Mine eventually all went away after I did this.

Since I was 5 years old I had warts. I had them on my hands, fingers, feet, ankles, knees, elbows. I did everything you can think of to get rid of them from witch doctor sugar pills to liquid nitrogen to laser treatment and nothing ever worked, it was just a temporary fix so I wouldn't have to look at them for a few weeks. Since the doctors couldn't do anything for me I began to take care of them myself. I would always carry a pair of nail clippers and clip the tops off just to the point where it wouldn't bleed; this was just so people wouldn't notice them as much. Or in the less exposed areas I would literally dig out the wart with a knife trying to get the root completely out. ( It was worth the pain. I hated them warts) At one point I counted 128 warts on body. Luckily for some reason ( maybe puberty) during the end of my freshman year of high school the dam things began to get smaller and smaller and they disappeared and never came back, thank god. But now I do have scars for the personal torturous treatments I inflicted upon myself.

I had plantar warts when I was young. My doctor prescribed formaldehyde. I would soak my feet in it each night for about 5-10 minutes. It eventually, dried out the top layer of skin. The skin peeled off, and I used a tweezer to pull out all the "colonies". The wart has never come back.

My kids both had warts on their fingers, and some on their arms for a really long time. I ended up finding the MASTER WART, the one that has been there the longest. Once I froze that one off, all of the other ones disappeared. As for plantars warts, my poor daughter had two on the bottom of her big toe for several months. She could hardly walk on that foot she was in so much pain. We tried everything and nothing worked. When summer came around, and the pool opened, she went barefoot, and I guess the combination of the hard concrete and the chemicals of the pool water completely got rid of them within two weeks.

I got rid of mine on my foot. It was large and painfull. They things ism you need to cut it off. But you can't cause it grows inward. So you get it to puff out my putting duct tape on it for a week. Take off the tape, soak your foot in warm water for a while, then slice through it with a new clean razor blade sterilized. Then put the liquid wart killer on and in the remnant. This will kill the virus that's all over in the piece that's left on your foot. Wash up real good. Let it heal for a few weeks. Repeat again with the duck tape for a week, etc. After 3 or 4 times it will be gone. Substitute copper welding plumbing torch sometimes to really burn it good. It doesn't hurt cause feet have little nerves.

My niece had persisant hand warts that returned after freezing. The dermatologist then suggested that she take tagamet (also know as Cimetidine,a type of antihistamine that is used for reducing stomach acid) and at the same time use the over the counter wart removers commonly available (Compound W or Wart Off) This worked relatively fast. Check with a professional for the correct dosage of cimitedine.

When I was 10 years old, my grandfather "charmed" a wart off of me for the first time. I had a huge plantars wart on the bottom of my foot. My grandfather had me pick a bean out of a bag of dried soup beans my grandmother bought at the store. He rubbed the bean on my wart and mumbled something under his breath. He then placed the bean in my right hand and told me to go outside and throw the bean over my left shoulder. Grandpa told me not to look for the bean, and the wart would be gone when the bean sprouted. Oddly enough, it worked. The wart disappeared a few months later. I got another wart when I was 18, and Grandpa did the same thing. He charmed the wart on Christmas Day and the wart was gone in the spring. He passed away about a month after he charmed the wart. He also did the same thing for other family members and friends.

I had a planters wart on my foot, underneath one of my toes. I used the over the counter pads on it, they didn't take it away, but it like attacked the skin covered, and turned it all white and changed the texture, that went on for like 3 boxes of pads, i finally just took nail clippers and cut the wart out. It hurt, but healed and was fine. No other warts since.

People say cutting it out doesn't work, but I believe you have to make sure you get the entire wart, otherwise, no it won't work, but if you get the entire thing and the area immediately surrounding it, they wont come back

As a foot doctor I have been treating warts for over 25 years. No treatment has worked as well as what I started using 3 years ago. It is a topical medication called Squaric Acid. It is an acidic formula but it does not burn the warts away. It stimulates the immune system to fight off the wart virus and the warts disappear within 2-3 months. You apply one drop to your wart and one drop to your arm every day. Within a week or two you will develop a red rash on the arm (it will itch). At that point you stop the application to the arm but continue with the daily application to the wart. The wart will gradually disappear (it may need some trimming). It needs to be made by a compounding pharmacy and kept in the refrigerator. Talk to your doctor about the medicine.

When I was a kid I had about twenty warts on my hands and a bunch on my right knee. I tried everything to get rid of them. I tried several over the counter remedies which burned like crazy,and then they came back anyway. My doctor treied freezing them, injecting them and than freezing them and nothing worked. Then my Grandma read in a magazine that if you soak the wart in very warm water for five min. and then put a uncoated asprin on the wart overnight with a band-aid holding it in place it would get rid of it. And it worked! I only tried this on one of my warts and they all disappeared. I don't remember how long I did this for, I was only 10. But twenty years later, I haven't had any return.

I have tried making a combination Castor Oil and baking soda into a paste. I apply it on a bandage and change every day. It becomes an irritant and it starts to dryup the skin tag, wart, or topical growth. It will then fall off. Just replace the bandage each day. Can take a day off in between and keep the bandage off. It itches a bit but you will be surprised when it is gone.

It seems to me that moisturization and then denying the wart oxygen are common parts of home remedies.

Myself I have 'dug out' a plantar wart on the heel of my foot. I do not recommend this because of the rist of infection, I had a large hole that took a week to heal. The plantar wart had about an inch long root; so I was fanatic about keeping the wound clean with alcohol and changing the bandages.

My fiancee was plagued with warts on his hands that embarrassed him. We tried the home freezing kit, finally we started pumicing and scrubbing. A couple of months ago they went away and he has been vigilant in making sure no others show up.

Unfortunately I got one, normal type, underneath my pinky toe I'm trying to get rid of now!

This brings back some very painful (literally) memories. As a child, I had over 100 warts on my hands. The doctor thought it would be too hard on me to burn them all off. Instead, 2x a day I had to take an emory board and sand each one down until I got to the "quick", put this concoction on and put a badage on each one. this was a painful and long process, but I got rid of every single one of them. The doctor told my mom that for me to go through all that was amazing. I hated those warts! This was around 1965.

Garlic applied directly to any wart, every other night or so before bed, will kill the little sucker.

When i was about six or seven i would go swimming at the local YMCA with my best friend. I remember walking barefoot on the wet, dirty, chlorine soaked floors. I'm pretty sure i recieved the many plantar warts i have had from there. I had 17 or 18 on my right foot and just 1 on my left foot. Over time and many freezing treetments the 17 or so on my right foot went away but the one on my left foot decided to stay. I've now had it for many years and i've tried the duct tape, freezing, lasering, and just about any acid you can think of. I developed a tumor on my right foot and got it surgically removed, along with the stubborn wart. It was completely gone but when it began to heal it came back. I have gotten it frozen and lasered again many times at the dermatologist. It's sooo stubborn. nothing seems to work on this one guy!!

I have five or six huge and painful plantars on my feet. Nothing worked, I tried freezing, salic acid, duct tape, two or three variaties of Compound W, cutting them out, shaving them off. My roomate in college finally got sick of me messing around with my feet and dragged me to the natural foods store.
The lady at the store recommended green apples. You chop it up, apply it to the warts for about an hour or two every night for a week or two. I used duct tape to keep it on my feet while I did my homework. Lo and behold, after four of five years of dealing with these stubborn warts, they disappear in a week and a half!.

My little brother was covered in warts, hundreds of them, in fact. We went to his pediatrician about having them removed and were told that it would be too dangerous and harmful (physically and emotionally) to the boy. The Doctor said something about the virus becoming airborne and advised against mass removal. My little brother began taking the growth hormone "Humatropin" for an unrelated growth hormone deficiency and within 8 weeks of regular injections of this hormone, all of his warts had disappeared! His endocrinologist had no explanation as to why this was possible, neither did the pediatrician or the pediatric dermatologist. This was in 2004 when whe started the growth hormone therapy and he has yet to develop another wart.

I've had only one wart. It was on my right thumb pad, which made writing a little painful. In Basic Training for the Army, I went to sick call and the doc froze it off. It took a while for it to slough off and the new skin to heal, but it worked.

You can go to a doctor and have your zinc serum level checked. It is likely with all those warts your zinc level is low. The doctor might prescribe zinc sulfate pills, which will raise your serum zinc level and probably eliminate your warts. Zinc sulfate made my wart-deformed hands look pretty normal again, and worked pretty well on my plantar warts too. It is best to go to a doctor to watch over your zinc intake since this could be dangerous on your own. Downside of zinc sulfate pills is they can be nauseating and are better absorbed when you're not eating a lot of vegetables. The doctor will probably give you a copper supplement also to avoid a copper deficiency. Hope this helps, warts can make life very unpleasant and embarrassing, I know. It's probably not a bad idea to visualize them fading into the skin and disappearing also. Dr Weil recommends this technique I believe.

I had wart next to nail. I tried vinegar, duct tape and freeze off. Didn't work. My niece had one like mine. She used the Compound W 40% Salicylic Acid one step strips. Has been wart free for about a year now. Worked for mine so far! I would peel off a white layer of the wart each time I changed the bandage. Took 6-7 weeks. I am now at 1 week, wart free.
