I know that pleasant smells can put me in a good mood almost instantly. Here's a list of my favorite smells of summer:

coconut suntan oil
plastic floats in a pool
freshly cut grass
gasoline smell coming from the lawn mower in the garage
bar-b-que on the grill
asphalt being spread on a hot day
watermelon
the air right after a summer rain shower
hot dogs grilling outside
the air wafting out of the Dairy Queen window when you’re waiting for your cone
elephant ears frying at the fair
Band-aids
sweet corn when you’re shucking it
chlorinated pool water
smoky campfire
cherry popsicle
a baby after an Ivory Soap bath
lilac blossoms
a skunk from far away in the summer night air
onions and peppers grilling at the fair
honeysuckle flowers
ice cold root beer
Windex
Pez candy
Play-Doh
the metal smell of a roller coaster on your way up the first hill

I find this article fascinating. And I certainly believe it--if we now use aromatherapy to heal people of sickness, why not believe that it affects many more areas of our life than we know. I'm glad research is being done on this.

One confusion in the article:
When you say things like "pumpkin pie and lavender," or "Good & Plenty and cucumber," it's not clear if those were meant to be used TOGETHER to create an impact, or each one, on its own, creates the impact.

This makes a lot of sense. Pumpkins pie for the holidays. Think back. Mom is in a pretty dress and bent over pulling the homemade pumpkin pie out of the oven for Thanksgiving. Dad is standing in the doorway smiling as he thinks about how sexy her behind is even though he doesn't get to see it nearly as much as he would like. The children standing next to dad with glazed looks are hoping they get the biggest piece of pumpkin pie. Great memories that go from childhood to adulthood. Love of food and love of sex.

I totally agree with these findings...because I was looking for an answer to sleeping better at night without a prescription. I for one love the smell of Gucci for men and found if I spray a little in the bdrm upon retiring for the evening I feel calm and dream pleasant dreams. Another thing I have found was if the master bath door is left open and the seat is up on the toilet the odor from the chemicals interfere with sleep.

I'd like to know what sort of influence the smell of beer has on most men. For my husband, it appears to be an aphrodisiac--and the more he drinks, the more aroused it seems to make him. Most of this is plain common sense. When you go into molecules, etc. have your 101 chem book handy. There are more important factors that pertain to smell other than nightmares and/or ice cream flavors that I would be concerned about. For some of us we can distinguish between the different arrays of bacteria and viruses as well as "cancers" and their mutant varities. You might reference this to already known studies on the subject of "smell"/ and senses. Somebody should really pursue this area and make use of the research in a productive way!!!!

Very interesting. This summer I have spent alot of time at our travel trailer in the woods, and I am not sleeping well there. Besides the woodsy smells, something else added to the mix. We had wood rotting in the floor, which we had to repair, but there was a lot of moisture, and we could not remove everything, which added a musty smell. (I have a mold allergy, so that's bad.) But, a friend gave us a little jar of an odor eliminator that is used in hospitals. It has a strong, very strong, soapy smell. I find the fragrance quite offensive, but my husband likes it. So, he put it in the tiny bathroom as an air freshner. I close the jar every change I get because I hate the smell. He opens it, even though I've voiced my objections. Of course, in our tiny trailer the bathroom is in a corner with the bed on one side of the door, and the sofa/bed on the other side of the door, so you are always within about 5 feet of the odor. I have been having crazy nightmares all summer. And I am very restless. Could it be that smell?? It all add up to YES!

I remember a few years ago, my now ex, burning a Rose fragrance stick and and realizing a little later, how relaxed I had become. It was sufficient for me to ask her to burn another one the following evening. Sadly it did not seem to work. Lavender is I understand worth putting on your pillow at night to aid/induce sleep. Worthy of further experiments.

I wish the article had said whether most of the "pleasant" smells were indeed foods. Except for the lavender, everything they list is a food smell. Baby powder is sexy?? I don't think so! Then again, I'm probably the only woman in the world who doesn't like that scent at all. Please tell me, is there a possibility of regaining the sense of smell that we experienced when we were younger? The sense of smell is very precious to me. I'd much rather have the ability to smell as well as I did when I was younger (Sacramento water district refused me a job as a
water taster because my sense of smell was too keen).

What an interesting study! I'm fascinated that lavender, a scent that usually is regarded as soothing or sedating, was found to be quite arousing. I would love to see expanded studies like this one, with more aromas and more effects examined (appetite, memory, energy, mood).

As it turned out, this person had a first kiss with another person whose breath had smelled like that at the time. Wait a minute... So I have been putting up with the smell of vanilla candles for no reason? I heard all the studies pointed to men loving vanilla and cinnamon. For years now I have made sure I had a small stock of those in candles and incense form. I can’t stand either one. :) I even put on vanilla cherry perfume, sometimes. I don’t like it. The things we do to please others. :) I really can’t stand the Pumpkin Pie scented candles, so I’m going to still be at a loss I guess. Good thing I don’t date regularly. Haha

Why would I be confused? The explanation is simple but only if somebody is a true Christian. It does not matter how many odorant receptors humans or animals have because God made humans in the image of him thus regardless of how many odorant receptors humans have their odorant receptors are more powerful than that of any animal. Also it doesn't take a scientist to discover these things. Anybody with almost half of a full meter of common sense would be able to compare different scents and find results to them. This would include me and my future husband who found out that the scent of pumpkin (It doesn't have to be pumkin pie) and lavender and scents relating to that such as arousing and calming scents such as soap and chamomile would stimulate sexual organs as well as simple things like the way skin feels. There is so many simple as well complicated ideas that scientists have figured out or investigated or even investigated deeply. Such as the simple concept of the fact that scientists have proven themselves that the reason why their big bang theory didn't work out so well even with the taxpayers money is because under their own minds they admitted that the chances were zero (I have yet to see the machine create people or anything else their "big bang theory" has said to have created yet they don't want to admit they were wrong so badly that they called it "successful" even though all it made ((exactly as smart common sense good Christian people predicted)) was exactly just a large "big bang" and made NOTHING I repeat NOTHING of anything else. They will continue to make excuses and lies and things of that sort until they resort to the ways of God and common sense etc. Also they have yet to even look at the complicated concept of dreams. Etcetera

Sense of smell is very strong. I used a favorite perfume when I went through a spell of chemotherapy treatments 12 years ago.

I'm so curious about pumpkin pie... is it the pumpkin itself or the mix of spices (e.g. cloves) that go along with it? As for the negative side, that would explain my childhood issues when my older brother's various sport's seasons started - all those stinky clothes in the corner hamper in our shared room. When it uses such phrases as 40% average increase and 13% average increase, does that mean that it is an average for every person in the study, i.e. did (for example) 4 people get 100% increased arousal, and the rest 0% and the average results come out as above. If this is so, the study doesn't mean much, other than that there are a few people with a bizarre association of certain smells?

i just can't sleep period when i smell a bad smell.
For exapmle, when i dont brush my teeth and i'm laying face first on my pillow and my bad breath like blows back into my face and it's discgusting, and i just can't sleep like that so i whind up brushing my teeth at the end.
