Siblings of the same parents can be very different genetics and resulting coloring as well...my older child "had been to Tahiti" as the doctor commented after catching her. He saw new born pictures of her father two weeks later and agreed she really did look like him (a repeat image said family and friends) but was a deep brownlike her Native American ancestors, a great great grandmother was either Cherokee or Cahota. The younger child with the same father, is definitely from my side of the family, a blue grey eyed, blonde then to balding from the great great grand english father on the maternal side. Genetics can do alot more blending of our ethnic differences than we realize...I have a friend with one child that has nappy white blonde hair and very fair english irish skin. We need to get over our obsessions with "purity" in relation to race!

I have three children who are all different colors, and I have a sibling with much darker skin than that of my own. In Black American families this is not unheard of---my father's and mother's siblings run the color spectrum from fair to light olive-skinned to tan to brown to ebony! I met a couple that had twins where one was white with blonde hair and blue eyes and the other was fully black with all the features you would expect. Both parents were white with blonde hair, I did not take notice of their eyes colors at the time.
They claimed there was nothing out of the ordinary in the past. Is it possible the mother had another lover and he was the father of another egg?

When I was a child I begged my mom to tell and that I could handled the news I had been adopted. My siblings all were fair skinned and blonde and red headed. I have olive complexion brown hair and with green eyes and look more american indian. My mother gave me a picture of my great grandmother and to my suprise I looked alot like her. She too was darker in skin tone and dark hair. My ancestry goes back to Jamestown and my ancestor Sir John Rolf married Pochahontas and my ancestry is Cherokee and blackfoot. I have two children with olive complexion and dark hair and 2 with honey toned skin and blonde. My husband is norwegian but his great great grandmother was canadian indian but wouldn't admit it. Im not sure I believe in the whole "God, higher being" creator claim, I think the fact that one parent is dark and one is light, only makes sense that children can be different shades of black or white. I know a few people (none of them twins) of bi racial parents and their skin colour ranges from dark to fairly light; not uncommon, and I am sure most people can claim to have met other bi-racial families where the kids arent all the same skin colour/skin tone. So if the article had not said that these babies were twins (obviously not identical) I dont think this would have made news. These twins are simply siblings who happen to share a birthday. I do not think this is a miracle and I think there is clearly a logical and simple answer as to why these children are both a different skin colour. I would have no doubt in my mind that these two kids are really siblings.

What is all the hoopla? One parent is caucasian, one is black - how should the children look? Also, they are fraternal twins, not identical. To say that one is white and one is black is actually false reporting. What has actually occurred is that due to the throw of the genetic dice, one child has more features of a white, and the other blac; one lighter, one darker. And who knows what they will look like when they are older. Among Arican Americans we see folks born very late, who when they are much older, are far darker, and we've seen people get lighter when they were dark while young. I am disappointed at the doctor's response to this. They, as scientists should not have been surprised, and neither should the father. What did he expect: his wife is African, did he think all the children would just look like him or some mixed coloring of the two? People get a grip. If race were not such an issue in this nation, this would not have even made the news.

This is the case of non-identical twins (as opposed to Identical twins who share the same set of genes), very similar to normal siblings. In other words, these are not what are termed as "nature's clones". This is very very common, just that when the "non-identical" twins are of the same color, nobody notices the differences.

What is the big deal here, especially since the parents are of different races ? I think this would have been news, if the parents were of the same race and twins (or siblings) of a color different from the parents' color, emerged.

Wow, that explains this bizarre thing in my native village in souther part of India. I met this family where one of the kids had fair skin blue eyes and blond hair while the other siblings had dark skin, black hair like most Indians. May be this gene was dormant and got exposed only now after several generations.

Sorry, but no miracle here! I am Black and my husband is White. Two of our boys have dark brown hair, brown eyes and coffee with cream skin tones. My third son is very blonde with a strawberries and cream complexion. He had bright blue eyes until about three and now his eyes are blue-gray. People are sometimes puzzled by this because my husband is brown haired and brown eyed like myself. Remember, our genetic wells run deep and the combinations are endless and sometimes quite surprising!

Whether it's all that unusual or not, you have to admit it's pretty cool. (And I am VERY happy to see references to other such births in the article. I read a similar article not too long ago with no references at all!)

I personally have not known anyone with twins of different colors, and twins themselves are rare enough. It's just one more example of the wonders of nature and the human body. Every new baby is amazing, these twins just happen to be a little more unique. I hope that it will be a positive thing in their lives.

As a multiracial child myself, I welcome them to a world of universal identity. Belonging and understanding a world without boundaries because they belong to all. Amazing what is considered news worthy in an age where we should be past this. This has happened time and time again just not reported. I had friends from Jamaica who are bi-racial twins but their hair folicles swapped, The causacian girl- porcelain rose complexion, blonde with pale blue eyes with her father's "coarse" hair & her sister beautiful african features. Deep golden brown, slight nasal flair, almond dark eyes but with her mother's texture of hair only deep brown. "The white one got the 'touch of the brush'", is what their family would say.

Maybe the world will mature enough to just put "human" as the box we have to check off when asked to identify "race". I can't tell you the look of horror on my teacher's faces when it came to standardized tests. "Are you asking me to lie and deny my mother or my father?" Got'em every time :)

For the Mom, just tell those strangers what my mother told them when they asked if I was adopted especially in the summer when the African- Seminole parts came out in all their beautiful glory. "I have the stretch marks to prove it, wanna see?"

The younger three are white and their father is white. You should see the looks we get (my oldest gets) when we are all out in public together. I agree with those who think this occurrence is un-amazing. One baby is really dark skinned and the other is dark skinned. Neither is actually "white." Like others have said, with bi-racial parents there's a great chance the babies they have will range in skin tone. Also, to comment on the person who said "most fraternal twins don't look alike"...that's pretty much the definition of fraternal twins...Great for them that they have two healthy babies though.

I agree in all of the cases (except the Gerth case) that it appears that one twin is white & the other twin is black or at least biracial. However in the Gerth case, one twin looks to be black & the other definitely looks to be biracial & not at all caucasian. I have 5 sons: 2 caucasian from dad #1 & 3 biracial from dad #2. All 5 of my kids are different colors even though they share the same father with at least 1 other sibling. I am also a maternity RN in an inner-city hospital. So I see babies of all shades of the spectrum. So to say that the Gerth boy is white is not true at all, he defintely appears to be biracial.

This isn't as odd as it may seem. I worked with a couple wherein the husband was African American and the wife was Caucasian and they had fraternal twins who were polar opposites. These are fraternal twins. I recently read an article about identical twins being born to a biracial couple. Both parents were 1/2 African-American and 1/2 White. The twins were identical in features and body types. Except for the color One was compltely Black, with dark brown eyes and black hair. The other one was completely white with blonde hair and blue eyes. The twins were from the same egg. The genes were divided equally. One baby got the dominant genes. I have 3 children, 2 that are large boned and show their American Indian heritage from their father. I have 1 child who is slight and looks like her English and Irish heritage. I had strangers ask me when they were children why 2 of them looked alike and the other one was different. I also had people who assumed the little "blonde" girl was a friend. I agree that it is not such a rare occurrence and genetics have an amazing way of working out. I am of mixed race with my mum being white and my dad black but my great great grandfather on my dad's side was (we think) white. I have an olive complexion, green eyes and straight hair. My kids father is Chippewa Indian, I am French, both boys look like their American Indian father, dark skin and dark hair, and my daughter looks like me, white skin and blonde hair. No one believes she is part Chippewa Indian. Oh well, eventually everyone will be so blended that maybe it won't matter the color of your skin, because we will all be the same. Wouldn't that be a wonderful world?

THis is always interesting to read about but honestly it's not such a big deal. I mean, my two brothers and I look nothing alike. One is really tall and thin, with easy-to-tan skin. One has a thicker build, with green eyes, bright thick red hair, freckles, and fair irish skin. I'm short, with brown eyes and a mix of red/blonde/brown hair that changes colours in the sun. We all have the same father and mother. Our personalities are completely different. Why is it such a shock that twins from the same parents would look different? Just because Americans are often mixed doesn't somehow delegitimize an ethnic Han Chinese, a Swabian German, or a Zulu African. Saying that we're all just one race and we're all the same is pretty ignorant. Whether or not race-mixing is a good thing is a matter of opinion. Personally, I don't mind it in small numbers but I think pushing it/popularizing it is highly undesirable. It would destroy diversity while at the same time creating new racial divisions. If you don't believe me, look at Brazil, or look at the plight of the "coloreds" (black-white mixed race people) in South Africa. You people are all living in fantasy-land. Learn something about the people in the world outside the US. Racial and ethnic uniqueness is something that should be protected, not diluted!

Not so unusual. In the 70's while in college a friend of mine introduced us to her twin brother and it was a bit unusual. She is very fair skinned with dark eyes and brown straight hair. In fact she looks Caucasian. Her twin is very dark-skinned with brown eyes, his hair is thick and wavy. Both parents are black but the mother is fair, not as fair as the daughter and the father is of a darker complexion. It's amazing how genes trick around, but it's what makes life interesting.

Anyone who has children knows how much they change after that first year and these babies may look more alike than any of us can ever say. I have a bi racial family, not known until the birth of a cousin. Both parents are blond hair blue eyed. My cousin came out with tightly curled brown hair. This was odd in itself. As she grew she developed more African American features, but she really really resembled her dad, my Uncle. No one remembers my grandfather except my mother who was the oldest of the five kids he fathered. Turns out he was a black puertorican. All his kids have either red hair or blond. My cousin came out looking like him.
My cousin has to be one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. As we all looked at pictures of ourselves we each noted the bi racial features we each had. None of us noticed this until my cousin got to her teen years.

His father is black and I am of German & Irish descent.When my son was born he was very white with big blue eyes and soft dark brown hair. His eyes stayed blue for two years then changed to hazel. After about six months his skin got darker, he is now a lovely extra light coffee color but in the summer he is darker than his father. His hair is now very coarse but light brown with red highlights. These babies are just newborns and can definitely change over time.

God made all of us in his image, so who cares what we look like when we are born. My father is Chocktaw with creole and Scottish who looks white along with his sisters and parents, while my mother is cherokee, french and black. Not to mention, I have a 26yr old brother whom we share the same dad, can pass for white all the way, but who cares.
I have three children (3 fathers): 19yr old son whose father is Native American and Black, my 14yr old daughter whose father is Sicillian (his mom is Jew) and my 10yr old father is Native American and black. We are definately what we call a mix vegetables.
But when it comes to my 14yr old, she gets confused with Spanish and Dominican and of course i'm the 'foster mother' right? That hurts both my daughter and my feelings.
Currently we are participating in our Cherokee Culture every day/wk/month, and we love it. We tell everyone that we are American Mix (everything on the board) just to shut them up. Hee Hee.

I read the story before I saw the kids. With the mother being African, I thought one twin was going to be albino, which is fairly frequent in West Africa. Turns out, the "white" twin looks to be typical of most mixed-race couples. In time, his complexion will darken and the hair will curl up, like most all babies of African desent. I could tell by the photos that he was brown skinned, not white. He definately will not be mistaken for white as he grows up, so I'm not sure why all the hype surrounds this birth. The "black" twin is unusually dark for someone who has a white parent, even if the other parent is dark. I think the news media should have sat on this for a while until genetic testing (not a doctor's declaration) proved these boys have the same set of parents. If so, then it would perhaps be newsworthy. Fraternal twins come from two separate egg fertilizations, which mean two separate sperm cells were involved, which could mean two different men provided the sperm. Note, the headline reads"...Brothers from the same mother" not "Brothers from the same parents". This is not really news.

I have twin boys, both obviously mine and my ex's. We're both Minnesotans of German descent, but right away you could tell these fraternal twins apart. Rob looked like a sickly preemie, Andy was abundantly healthy. Once Rob caught up, it was obvious that Andy could tolerate sun, and has always been olive-skinned tan. Rob would burn in ten minutes if I'd let him. Then, their temperaments... Andy: I'll talk to anyone!! Rob: not. Twenty years later, they are both 6'1", 150#, in college and doing equally, uh, average. Funny things: Andy's shoe size is 8.5, Rob's is 13.5! Both kids take totally after me and not their dad, but, have picked up on different qualities. Luckily, one doesn't have all of the bad ones!! Not so unusual. My mother is of mostly French descent while my father is Irish/Russian. When my brother and I were both born we had very very light skin and blond hair. Over the course of 20 years we both have acquired more slavic features, darker skin, darker eyes, and much darker hair.

I'm very happy the twins are healthy, but I don't see what is so newsworthy. The twins have different coloring, but I wouldn't call one black and one white. If you put the lighter skinned baby next to a "white" baby, you'd see the difference. My husband and I are both Caucasian and our son has blond hair, blue eyes and light skin like my husband and our daughter has dark hair, brown eyes and "olive skin" (according to our pediatrician) like me.

I don't see much of a difference between the twins, I was very light when I was born, you couldn't tell I was black, I came out more like my mother but now that i'm older I look a lot more like my father and have became a lil darker so my point is....sure one is darker but the other twin isn't much lighter, plus when he gets older the lighter twin will get darker with blue eyes, both babies are cute, wish them health and happiness

The is one of life's amazing wonders. This is a beautiful family. I also had the oppurtunity to see the twins born in 2005 to the british parents. They were very lovely and the looked identical other than there skin tone. Unfortunately, when it comes to the color of skin there is alot of ignorance. I go through it everyday. I have a coco brown complexsion. My first son is very dark ( although his father is lighter than myself). My two middle son's have carmel brown skin. My 1 year old is literally golden (he has golden skin and brownish blonde hair). His father nor myself posses any of those traits. When my kids are babies the look like they can be of a hispanic decent and fustrates me when people ask me are those your kids.

I know a little boy who is for sure of african american bi-racial decent by the look of him and his biological parents are white. The parents almost divorced, but dna proved beyond a doubt 99.6 percent that both of the white people were the parents of the bi-racial child. These little angels are truly rare. Unfortunatly the vast majority of biracial babies are born with an invisible risk. Should the tiny things develop such afflicitions as leukemia for example, then neither parents bone marrow is transplantable. Not really a big deal. First of all, the lighter skinned baby isn't even that light. Plus, since they are fraternal twins, they are basically like any other set of siblings. When my nephew was brought to my sister's bedside (she had been put under for an emergency c-section) she informed them they brought her the wrong baby. For my nephew was a copper penny red-headed blue-eyed white baby. He remained a curly red-headed child until about 4 years of age. Now 18 years-old, he is brown-eyed, brown haired but still "white."

Is this really one in a million, or is it that there is no way to keep track of the complexions of twins born to multi/bi-ethnic (there is NO SUCH THING AS RACE) people?? My hunch is that if doctors worldwide tracked such things, the ratio may be a bit smaller. (As if we don't have enough problems trying to keep all of our so-called races in their appropriate boxes!)

The babies are beautiful and healthy, and since the mom and dad are different phenotypes (skin color, eye color and hair type), I would expect that the babies would either be an extreme or a mixture of the two parents -- I agree with the posters who say this is really not news beyond the fact that they are very cute.

I do think, however that it does speak to the continued prevalence of blackness as a novelty/curiousity. The fact that the article speculates on whether the mother may have some "white" in her ancestry gives weight to the fact that we tend to always look for the "spook in the woodshed" in situations like this.

Basic genetics proves this is NOT 1 in a million! The media is perpetuating ignorance.

Think about it: How many siblings have different colored hair or different colored eyes or different shaped noses or different heights? Fraternal twins are siblings like any others. It's just coincidence they come out at the same time.

Imagine if the media reported on EVERY set of fraternal twins who didn't resemble each other or their parents.

"Race" genes do not exist. Race differences are socio-cultural.

Ever notice how these cases are mostly in Europe? Because these are overwhelmingly "white" countries where you just don't see as much diversity.

These types of stories aren't seen in the US or Latin America because IT'S NOT NEWS.

I'm a black American with "white" and "black" twins. Sure, some people are surprised but it doesn't take a Nobel prize winner to figure out "how did that happen"? (The old fashined, non-IVF, non-prostitution way in our case. Not that it is anyone's damn business.)

I'm really happy for this family and wish them the best.

And if you're German and see them, please smile at how cute they are and DON'T ask dumb questions.

I think this article was written because usually the kids of a mixed race couple end up with skin color more of a mix of the parents rather than pure white/black/brown. I am white and my husband is Pakistani. Our 3 kids are much darker than me, but much lighter than him. That is what I normally see of other mixed race couples we know. Just to clarify something about "Latino/Hispanic", we don't all look like JLO.

"Hispanic" doesnt describe anything, its just a term used by the govt. to separate the latino part (for instance, Italians are also latinos [since they're part of Latin Europe] but they wouldnt fall under the Hispanic category). Thing is, the govt needs to describe people from Mexico through Argentina, so the word is "Latino/Hispanic." But if you look at the islands, most are mulattoes, and in central america and some of south america, mostly mestizo and white. 97% of Argentina are descendants from white european inmmigrants. Brazil is just a big mix of everything. So, there is no definite "race". we do share the culture and the language, but not the race. So next time you say 'so and so looks hispanic/latino", explain yourself.

This is not uncommon in the African-American Community. I am dark skinned and I have cousins that have very fair skin, red hair, and green eyes. My grandfather has blue eyes. There are very dark skinned parents that give birth to fair skinned children. This is not amazing, it is genetics. My family skin color ranges from the very light with dark brown eyes to very dark with light brown eyes. We have Caucasian, African, Irish, Choctaw and I'm sure a lot of other races too. It's funny that when I tell people that I have red hair they look at me funny (because I'm pecan tan) but then it shows in the summer, my oldest child is REALLY light with almond shaped eyes (like mine) and people think she's of Asian descent.
Funny thing though, when my middle daughter was born, she had a curly head of hair (looked JUST like her father who is black and Cherokee)and when I took her in for her PKU test (where they prick their heels) they had checked on her card that she was Hispanic. I cracked up but I had them correct it though.

I think that would be really cool to have twins like that. I am of mixed race and I got the same looks and comments growing up. My mom is half Navajo & Half Spanish and my dad is black. So when my mom used to check me out from school they would tell me "that's not your mom." Also when my parents divorced my step-father was Navajo. So needless to say how ignorant people are. I tend to show more of my Native American roots (which is about 1/32) than he does. One of our children has dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin. The youngest has Blond hair, blue eyes, and light skin. The middle one is halfway in between them. They all tend to get about the same shade in the summer. People have asked us more than once how we could afford adopting the youngest two. I always tell them that I broke the mold with each one. My twin brothers could pass for identical twins, but there is some difference so obviously they are fraternal.

My youngest sister looks like my mother except she has light tan skin and light brown hair. I'm almost as tall as she is (she's 5'9 and I'm 5'6) but with dark colored hair and olive skin. In contrast, the rest of my sisters are short - closer to 5 feet. My brothers are 5'9 and taller. We all have some Chinese traits.

I had a friend from high school who married a Hispanic man. She is really fair and blonde and he is of course, dark skinned with dark hair and eyes. They have 2 daughters and one of them is very fair and blonde and the other is really dark with dark hair. You wouldn't know they were sisters.

She would get asked by rude people, "Do they have the same father?" even though she had been married to this man before, during and after she had the girls and there was never a question in anyone's mind about their paternity.

WELL, I have two "twins" who do not look like each other or me or my husband. The male is black and has l-o-n-g legs; the female is sable & white and has *very* short legs. In fact, I adopted them, just as they are. I love them more than anything. OH, yeah, my "kids" are dogs, but they give me unconditional love. Shouldn't we humans also love each other the same way?

Hi all!I have boy/girl twins and to this day(16yrs old) my son has a dark complexion(looks like he has a year round tan)he almost looks like he has Indian in him w/ sandy blond hair and his twin sister is light skinned w/ brown hair and they both have green eyes. My younger daughter is very light skinned with white hair and blue eyes and my ex husband and I are both white(caucasion) w/ blond hair. Its just so cool how genetics play their role!!

It is so amazing how everything can become an issue when it comes to coloring. Way back when on the Island of Aruba (Dutch Antilles, Caribbean) and I am talking like over 50 years ago there were twins girls born with the same situation but we did not find it an issue. It was normal, the mother was white and the father black. Just imagine if you get a zebra or polka dot effect, wow, wont the word be upside down then. Lol.

MLKJ?? what?? he has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that siblings simply look like different members of the family. it's all in the genes, and so many people have children out of wedlock, with different partners, or they go thru fertility, etc. God made us all and we can not even begin to comprehend His ways....there shouldn't be any controversy, or medical miracle... just thank God for what you get, dont analyze so much...maybe contentment would be the lesson here, and love, and mind your own business, dont judge...especially someone's babies!

When I first met my husband, his grandmother was into creating a family tree. She could pinpoint them all the way back to the Mayflower and beyond to Scotland, France and Germany. I remember a conversation, when I was asked what kind of ancestry did I have. I said simply "Mutt", and laughed.

Most black families have a rainbow of colors simply because of our "slave heritage". My oldest daughter has caramel colored skin, like me. My youngest inherited her father's skin tone. When she was a baby, people assumed I had adopted a "white" baby. I used to get offended by their look of surprise when I said that she was mine. I got over that. Even today, there is an occasional look of surprise when either one is out with the "different" child. Even though all you have to do is look to see the similarities to each parent.

I love the fact that my kids will grow up to celebrate diversity and not be afraid of anything or anyone different from themselves. The world is changing for the better. Some people just still have to move along with it and stop being surprised by it.

Wow amazing, it seems that my brother's sons are one in million. My brother has skin color dark brown (i can't call it balck) and my sister-in-law has white skin. Four years back, they had twin boys, and one of them has white skin (went to my sister-in-law), and another dark brown (as my brother). They were not similar at all, nothing from any view.

I am lucky that I am uncle of twin, which are one in one-million......

This is fairly common in societies where there are more people of mixed race. In Puerto Rico, where many people have mixed ancestry, it is common for siblings, even fraternal twins to have different skin and eye colors. I know several cases, including one where the father is of European ancestry and white, the mother is dark-skinned. One daughter has very fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes and the other is totally African-American.

For one all identical twins do not have to look exaclty the same, they do however have the same genetic make up. I just had twin girls 6 weeks ago, I am hispanic and my wife is white. One girl has my exact coloring however looks like my wife the other twin girl is white with light brown hair and blue eyes, and looks like me. I think that this is not so un common, does not seem like a one in a million shot, but happy for the couple.

This is not so odd. The children developed from two eggs in their own sack. If the parents are mixed race they can have children that have a full spectrum of racial characteristics.

Is this really news or is Germany that homogenous for this to be a rare occurence?

The most amusing part of it is my daughter could not look any more like a typical white teenager (looks like my side of the family), yet speaks fluent spanish with a strong spanish accent and has almost exclusively hispanic friends. My son, with distinc hispanic coloring and features (looks like mom), barely stutters through spanish and has almost exclusively non-hispanic friends.

Our family ancestry is 50% Dutch with Danish and French. I look like a typical Dutch girl with fair-skin, blue-green eyes, and blond hair; my brother is olive-skinned with brown eyes and dark brown hair. I once saw a family with a son who could have passed for my brother's twin; when I asked them where they were from, they said they were Persian (Iranian)! My brother and I have the same tall, thin build, same facial bone structure, etc, so when people look closer, they can see the family resemblance, but I often get disbelief when I tell people he is my full brother. Mom says there is some mysterious Mediterranean ancestry (no one is sure of the source) in the Dutch side that pops up every now and then. We are from a large extended Dutch family and you can see the dark genes in a handful of the 90-some cousins.
I think it is an interesting and beautiful phenomenon when genes mix like that. Variety is the spice of life.

I don't see why this is such big news. Color is not "incompletely dominant" or any such things. There are a great number of factors that create colors, and if studies are to be believed, we all hail from common roots somwhere in Africa, anyway. My biggest concern is that often in these cases, the darker one will be reviled as the "lesser" child by outside (of the family) forces. Let us pray that neither the family nor outsiders give these twins a hierarchy based on appearance.

Nice call to ebony coe from D.C. However when someone is mentioning Caucasian which has nothing to do with “race” it has to do with phenotypes(facial structure). Ethiopians, Nubians, and other African peoples have often been considered Caucasian.

Another issue that I keep seeing come up are people making comparison between people in the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and other countries in the Western Hemisphere. Both Puerto Rico and Brazil are a veritable genetic stew of African, Native, and European genes mixed in. While in the United States in African American that can trace their family back to the 19th century probably has some white genes. And there are many white Americans that have black genes(instances of this include Carol Channing, and Anatole Broyard).
My point is that Germany is pretty homogeneous as is Ghana. This is more of the reason why this birth is unique. It still isn't common that children would take on the traits of only one parent.

I'd have to agree K Stafford from MD. I don't understand the big news about this? It happens, it always has happened. different shades, different ethnic backgrounds combined. You are going to have a vary in shade among children in a bi-racial family. I just think America has yet and will not get over the whole race issue. People just take it being such a big "suprise" when a black woman gives birth to a child of her complexion then or at the same time a child of a fair skin complexion..I would say get over it, but I know as some others may agree, it wil NEVER happen.

I'm a brown-skinned black woman with greenish-colored eyes (picture coloring like Beyonce the singer)and married to a white man. My two older children look completely white-one with green eyes and one with bright blue eyes, but my youngest is darker (but still lighter than me)-sort of an olive color and with deep green eyes and you can definitely see that she's mixed (I often get asked if her father is Italian). If I had my youngest at the same time as one of my older kids (i.e. fraternal twins) I'd be in the newspapers for having a black and white set of twins, too. It's not that big a deal to have fraternal twins looking different-if these two had been born a year apart no-one would even care. Also, the fairer baby is 'light' not 'white'-he looks the way you'd expect a bi-racial baby to look.

With all that said, I will not be impressed until I see some DNA proof that this man is the father. I do not buy it for one minute. That is a black baby-not bi-racial! No child comes out with the DNA of one parent unless it is a clone-there are dominant and recessive genes but both parents contribute to a child-that is just nature, pure and simple.

IMPORTANT! Note in the video that the mum said the first baby came out and he was 'o.k.' and then the second one came out and he looked different. That word 'o.k.' is the key word! How was she expecting him to come out? It's like she was relieved that he came out as he should but then the next one didn't. I smell a rat with this situation. One of these big newspapers needs to offer to do a DNA test. I will be following this story because I know that this isn't the end of it-the truth will come out some day!

I know that scientists say this is so, but I don't believe it...they are always doing studies and coming up with new conclusons about things and I won't be surprised when they say that Hispanics ARE NOT Caucasian. They have to be some kind of mixture of genes-I think scientists just didn't know where to lump them. If anything Hispanics should fall under the Asian race. How can a race so dark in skin color be Caucasian? If they were really Caucasian we'd see it 'cause they'd be...well-Caucasian!

And yes-I do know all about the whole Iberian Peninsula thing...but what happened AFTER the Hispanics left this region-who did they mix with to get that dark coloring?! I.e.-why did some Caucasians get darker while some stayed white-Hispanics have to have something else thrown in there!

I have been reading all the comments here about the wonderful birth of 2 healthy baby boys. I agree with the comments that some have made about how the children of bi racial couples can differ in skin tones; However the miricle that came out of the birth of the twins mentiond is that normally faternal twins have the same skin tone as one parent, not both. The miricle is that one child received the domanate jeans of the father, the other the domanate jeans of the mother.
If we go back to how we all received our skin tones, it was when the babaloynians decided to build a tower into heaven to confront God. God destroyed the tower and changed the languages of the Babaloynians and their skin color so they could not communicate with each other to beable to rebuild the tower. They were scattered to the differnt places where they started their own clan. The births of twin children of different skin tones reminds us of, one race, different nationalities.

She and I are caught between worlds and ethnic backgrounds more commond but still not sanctioned in todays age, We're not Spaniard, but not Chinese, not Cuban, but not Italian, not Italian but not Greek. We are everything and yet nothing to some. And for all of you who say that's not true in your own lives, think back . . . At some time you must have felt like keeping someone "not like you" out of your world.

I have two grandsons now, they are lovely and beautiful, but will the world look at them the same way I do? As lovely beautiful boys?
One looks Chinese, one is Irish with blondish hair. Will my grandson that looks Chinese be afforded the same allowances my other grandson does? Or will life be less accepting of him, as my grandmother experienced in the 1930's? Perhaps certain doors will open-up for him, but as we all know . . . Not all of them.

It's not just in bi-racial families that people can look quite different. My parents are both "white". One has black hair and brown eyes. The other has red hair and blue eyes. I have blonde/red hair and brown eyes. My sister has brown hair and blue eyes. We don't look like we are sisters either. In saying that my parents are both "white" they have come from ancestry that includes the intermigling of various different european ethnic groups- English, Irish and Scottish and who knows what else. Everyone is all intermingled and who knows which pieces of genetic information will be passed down to an individual and which won't. Other than has been mentioned here that God does. He knew us, as it says in Psalm 139:13-14, in our mother's womb and that's all that matters to me.

As an adult and with my father, people think I'm adopted. UNBELIEVABLE - is what I have to say about this story. People are pretty IGNORANT to make a big deal out of this, as if those babies are "aliens" or something! There is NOTHING "abnormal" or "drastically" different about those two little twins...one parent is black and the other white; therefore, the outcome can be ANYWHERE at, or in between the two races. And to be VERY HONEST, BOTH of those babies look like your "typical" African/African-American newborn babies; which, I am WELL AWARE, that ALL folks have NOT seen or are familiar with (or else this story would not be news!). They obviously took their dominance from their Mother's genetic side. And just to educate "some people," our babies are generally a little bit "lighter skinned" upon birth as well; their color will darken as they grow older. "Check behind the ears," is what we say. Even eye color can turn later (i.e. the blue eyes, as my own daughter was born with them, as they later turned brown)!!! It's just like blonde babies,later turning brunette. So, why wouldn't bi-racial children, with one black parent, have the potential to be born "in the likeness" of typical black babies? Both of those babies look BROWN....one lighter and one darker. I am really somewhat OFFENDED at how the media has "presented" these babies...by making all of these "contrasts and differences" as if they are some "freakish anomaly." GET EDUCATED BEFORE POSTING STORIES IN THIS MANNER!!!!!!! The babies are truly a BLESSING and THAT in itself is newsworthy...but the other "miseducated hype," does nothing but perpetuate separatism and uneventful "differences" of such a precious, blessed event.

As an historian, it's welcoming to read the overwhelming positive comments accepting mixed races in the U.S. Our familly, like other Americans, are a mix of Cherokee Indian, German, French, and Scandinavian. Several years ago, my light skinned, blue eyed, brown hair husband learned that he has 36% Sickle Cell Disease which is found in African American populations. My Scandinavian racial mother in-law saw this news as an insult, but we raised our two college sons and our two teenage sons to accept people for who they are. Even in the South, I see current genera-tions breaking the long standing attitude of racism as they realize their family history of race as a postive factor of who they are not just in relation to the U.S., but in the world. Genetis are a crazy thing. I knew my daughter could either have blonde, light brown, dark brown, black or even red hair. With brown, green or blue eyes. And a range in skin tone from dark to fair with freckles. Her father is half Indonesian (black hair, dark eyes, but red mustache and freckles) his father has red hair, freckles & fair skin and his mother looks is from the islands. My dad is mexican, black hair but with green eyes and my mom is german with red hair and every single family memeber on her side for the last 100 years has had light eyes.....my daughter has auburn hair, hazel blue grren eyes, and the most lovely dark tan skin. The only thing odd about this story is that it is a story at all. It is sad that this has to be news because the author/publisher felt that our social ignorance with regard to "race" necessitates such heart-warming examples of how trivial race is. I am a fraternal twin. My sister has dark brown eyes and I have blue eyes. My older brother has dark brown eyes. My father has dark brown eyes. My mother's eyes are hazel. My brother and sister look more alike than I do to either of them. But we all have my father's thick, dark, curly hair. My sister and I have my father's fair skin and my brother has my mother's "not-so-fair" skin that tans beautifully in the summer. I inherited my mother's nose, my sister inherited my father's nose, and no one knows where my brother's nose came from. We all have the same parents, both white, one is Ashkenzi and the other is Ashkenazi/Romaniote (different Jewish decents). The one who's Romaniote has the fairer skin!! My sister and I have personalities as different as night and day, yet she and I have that special "twin bond" that is irreplacable that neither of us has with our brother. As my sister says, we've been together "since fetus." And so have the boys with different skin tones. Being together "since fetus" is stronger than any similarities or differences in phsycial characteristics. I have to say it's a shame not everyone gets to experience that bond. With all the fighting, jealousy, enmeshment issues, rivalry and comparisons, I wouldn't trade it for the world!! God blessed everyone!

That being said, I propose that the phenomenon is not in the fact that the babies look so drastically different, but rather, how are they going to be listed on the birth certificate? Reading this makes me giggle a bit. For years, people would ask my mother if my younger sister & I were twins because we were always around the same height & weight. She would comment how she was in labor for almost 2 years & the strangers would realize their mistake. It's ironic now because I grew to have very tan skin (taking after my mother's Native American side) and dark features while my younger sister is very pale, freckles & hazel eyes (taking after more of the Irish of my mother's and Scottish of my father's side). Of course, now that she's 6" taller & 30lbs heavier, no one believes us when we say we're sisters!

Whats all the fuss about? This is not news. Try meeting a Jamaican family with shared parents and look at the family tree, usually every body looks quite different!! Its beautiful!!! Furthermore, there is ONE RACE!!! and its the HUMAN RACE. When we get to the place where we can see each other as plain and simple humans, of different nationalities and cultures and languages. We can only see that we are more alike than we are different, then we should higlight and appreciate our Unique Human features rather than label and brand each other as though we are items on a store shelf. Labelling breeds discrimination. When its gets right down to it we are just Wonderful & Beautiful people. Lets get over the Race issue, and embrace humanity.

Each of these babies are bi-racial; neither is only "black" or "white". they simply have strikingly different skin tones. Isn't it interesting that society feels compelled to lable these babies as either "black" or "white" when in reality they each are both? If both babies were of a similar skintone somewhere between that of each of their parents what label would be used for them?

It's no wonder what my God can do. All things are possible with God. They ( father and mother ) conceived the twins but it was God who did this and it just shows that when you plant apples you get apples but when the plant is cross with another it loses its taste as an apple and it becomes both of the two so why is it strange when it comes two different colors of the parents conceiving

I enjoyed this article. I have a neice and a nephew that fall into this category too. My sister and her husband have dark complections with dark brown eyes and black hair. My nephew mirrors them, but my neice however is very light and has light eyes and light brown reddish hair with blonde hightlights. I feel most sorry for my sister's husband he is the butt of many jokes. People are so quick to assume the worst, that is not his child. It's really quite sad!

how cool, the babies are both cute and healthy is all that matters.
i must admit that i sometimes feel a bit down when i look at my daughter and wish she would look a bit more like me and less like her dad (different skin colour, im brown skin mexican, he's white british), but these couples got one twin looking like one of them so everyone is happy :P

I am an African American woman, married to a Caucasian man. We have two beautiful daughters. Our oldest daughter is my complexion, but looks like her dad. We've bought out the pictures and said to people don't look at the color, look at the features. They are blown away as to how much she looks like her daddy. The youngest is very fair skinned, but looks exactly like me. I get questioned about their paternity all the time. Everyone to include his family has asked if my husband is truly her father. I just reply with a "YES he is" and when you start mixing up colors you never know what you are going to come up with. The only problems that came up with our girls were caused by other nasty people (usually adults)saying rude and cruel things to them. People always want to tell them that they can't be sisters. However my girls are older now and have come up with wonderful comments for people who question their ethnicity/parental identity. They are strong young ladies who embrace both of their cultures and enjoy life to the fullest. That is my advice to couples in inter-racial relationships. Teach your children to be proud of who they are and that others opinions are just that person small narrow minded view. Live a prosperous and full life as productive members of society. Congrats on your beautiful babies.
