Skinny thighs could spell your doom

At last, good news for anyone who ever despaired of fitting into skinny jeans: Thin thighs might actually kill you. Or at least put a strain on your heart.

That’s the word from Danish researchers who studied more than 2,800 middle-aged people for up to a dozen years, only to find that those with the slimmest thighs had the highest chance of heart disease and premature death.

“There was up to a double risk for the people with the smallest thighs,” said Dr. Berit L. Heitmann, a director of research at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark. “It’s quite substantial.”

People whose thighs measured less than 60 centimeters, or about 23.6 inches in circumference, were in trouble. And those with stick-thin gams (less than 18 inches around) were at the greatest risk, according to new study in the online version of the British Medical Journal.

By that measure, supermodels everywhere would be in grave danger, while those who one fitness expert described as “normal-sized people,” would be in the pink.

“Typically a 23.6-inch thigh on a female would be a size 6 to 8,” said Greg Benson, president of the International Sports and Fitness Trainers Association.

A woman with thighs that size might be 5-foot-1 and weigh about 135 pounds, a few inches shorter and a bit heavier than the reported measurements for singer Beyonce Knowles, who is known for her curves. A man with thighs like that might be 5-foot-7 and weigh 160, about the reported size of actor Tom Cruise.

Although the reasons for the increased risk of small thighs isn’t clear, it’s likely that those with smaller limbs lacked the muscle mass and lower body bulk necessary to ensure proper glucose and lipid metabolism, key factors for more serious disease, Heitmann said.

“It would seem that having too little muscle or fat in that region would be a problem,” she added.

Typically, of course, it’s the other end of the tape measure that signals trouble: People with too much junk in the trunk – and everywhere else – are usually obese and at risk for host of fat-related ailments.

But Heitmann’s study, which was started in 1987 and followed patients through 2002, found that people with thinner thighs had a 50 percent to 100 percent higher chance of developing heart disease within a decade or dying by year 12 than their chunkier companions.

The results were similar for both sexes, and, surprisingly, the thigh measurement stayed the same, too, noted Heitmann.

She was quick to add, however, that the study should not be interpreted as a free pass for people who want to skip the gym.

In this case, much bigger was not better. The protective benefits of heftier thighs didn't rise when thighs grew larger than 60 centimeters.

“There’s no further advantage there,” Heitmann said.

I totally believe this. Both my mom and aunt who were very thin with no hips died of heart disease.
Rubbish. Obesity and skinny thighs both are bad for heart. How many people are perfect in the world? Lifetime is predefined, we all die when we have to. This research isn't helping anyone.
Wow!
Thank GOD!  I knew there was some sort of evolutionary reason for thick thighs.
In MHO, this is because women who are overweight yet have skinny legs are more likely to be the "apple" body style where weight is carried in the torso and not in the legs.  Unfortunately for me, as I am more "apple" than "pear", "apples" are more likely to have heart issues.

I'm not sure why they missed this connection, since almost any woman can tell you that a woman who is heavier but has thin legs always is big in the middle.
YAHOOOO !     ;)
At last a bit of good news for me . . .
Why would anybody do a study specifically on the size of the thigh?  I think somebody has issues with their own thighs.
I live in China, where gorgeous slender legs abound, and they'll outlive most Western people.
Now if they could just prove that big butts made you live longer I would be very happy.
Deb,

know you dislike lit whn I mention most things reelated to exercise, but after your thyroid surgery is over you ought to think about the contents of this article
Love,
daD
So, essentially, everyone with thighs less than 60 cm are in trouble and there is no "protective benefit" at more than 60 cm.  Hmmmmmm- I guess we're all in trouble and there's no point in measuring our thighs.  Let's move on to the next body part we don't need to measure.

Next thing you know someone will come up with another dangerous surgical procedure.  This time to suck stomach fat and pump it into thighs.
God! I would love to give just about anything for skinny legs. Even a few years of my life. I was curst with tick-monster legs. Can't wear skirts, shorts; only option is long pants.
The next study should be, It your eyelids are not a cretin size. You are destine to lose you since of hearing.
All these researchers should not be granted and funding for these weird studies.  Nothing like putting
more pressure on the human race. Now they have to think of having heart failure for being borne with thin thighs. Really what next.
This is one of the most ridiculous stories I've probably ever read. There is nothing provided in this article that gives any indication behind the scientific reasoning or the causes of the relation between thin thighs and heart disease except for statistical evidence. And something tells me this is anther ploy like the "wine is good for you, no wait... it's bad for you, hold on... no it's good for you again" circus that I always here in the news. Until "they", whoever that may be, can prove that there is a direct link between thin thighs and heart disease beyond somewhat convincingly circumstantial evidence, I'll continue my daily routine without regard to anything in this article.

Numbers like 50% to 100% tend to catch my eye and allow me to determine that this entire article is complete malarkey. If there were a 100% chance, or even just a 50% chance, of me dying within 12 years of having thin thighs, with the genetic history of my family and heart disease, I should be dead right now.
Sounds like an excuse to be over weight to me
this is just bunk.  Either the reporter misread the report or the research work itself is flawed.
Do you hear that? It's the sound of my happy thighs rubbing together!
I know that's probably a picture taken from some runway, but if it weren't for the bikini I'd suspect that was from a story about famine. There's nothing remotely attractive about that look. How does she keep in on with no hips? Tape?
Seriously though, I don't know how she has the energy to get out of bed, much less walk down a runway. Talk about unhealthy.
Skinny thighs might mean a chance of heart issues, but I can't stand to see fat, cottage chees, thunder thighs.  Skinny thighs might die younger, but you will have more fun in your life than fat thighs.  Let me see the skinny legs!!
I may not be overly fond of my thighs, but the ones featured in the above photo are pretty scary looking.  I have never understood why designers want a woman with no shape whatsoever to model their clothing.  Is it because they have so fallen in love with how the clothes look on a hanger?

I am a tennis fan and LaCoste is one of the sponsors. They run TV adds during the televised professional tournaments. You see all these beautiful, athletic bodies, anything but fat, moving around the court like finely tuned machines and then they cut to stick figures modeling LaCoste clothing. It is so ironic to see these sick looking, bony models prancing about in clothing designed for the active person.  They look hideous.  I pray that the young women watching are admiring the athletes not the models.
First you say that people with thighs less than 60 cm are at risk, then you say that health benefits stop at more than 60 cm.  So essentially, people all need to have thighs that are 60 cm?

Why not just say that, instead of implying there's a safe range of some sort?
Great!  Another reason for people with thunder theighs to justify being obese!
What a stupid study. While doing this study did anyone look at the family history. That has more to do with the fact that you are more likly to have heart disease or not. Genes not body fat or lack there of is what you should be looking at. What a waste of time, energy and money.
Is this related at all the "skinny gene"  that was discovered?  Skinny people typically moved faster and I quess they burn out rather than fade away.
I disagree! My grandmother had skinny thighs and narrow hips and she lived to 92. She did not die of heart disease.I also have thin thighs because I exercise and watch what I eat. Quit justifying an unhealthy life style to those that need to take control.
Who sponsored this study?
This article is interesting. The legs and gluts are the largest muscle groups in the body so it would make sense that a person who lacks this would have heart related issues. I'm just glad someone had the heart to do this study. Everytime research like this comes out, it's confirmation that too skinny or too fat is just not healthy.
On the question of why do a study on the thigh, your circulatory system depends in part on your legs. The blood goes down and then up again to the heart, and your muscles help with some of that -- one of the reasons people need to physically move about on a regular basis.  People who are paralyzed from the waist down quite often have heart issues because of lack of exercise/movement, and need someone to help them move the legs regularly, for instance.

So the dimensions of the thigh may be pertinent to how effectively the blood is circulated through that part of the body -- too little muscle and there may be not enough assistance -- too much and there may be blockage (although that'd probably be more from fat and/or inactivity...)
Heart disease has to do with what you eat, or it can be hereditary. I have 21" thighs and little trunk fat and don't believe the size of my thighs are going to land me six feet under, but what I put in my mouth will.
Who sponsored this research?  Twinkies?  Pepsi?  McDonald's?

This is great...let's give that fat guy that sits next to me on the airplane another reason, besides lazyness, to not lose weight.
I think that extreme anything can be harmful, including extreme thinness/fatness, extreme over/undereating, and over/underexercising.  The photo is a good representation.
I couldn't help but catch the posting from SN claiming that 'lifetime is predefined,' and not for us to be concerned with.
With due respect I must disagree.  First, I do not accept the premise.  Second, if I did it would be invalid due to smoking, obesity, excessive drinking and other personal choices that folks make that can seriously jeopardize one's health.
RUBBISH just like most of the so called medical news or any other news.  Think for yourself and get real facts not ones created so you will listen to the story, read advertisement or watch advertisements.  It's ALWAYS ALWAYS about money and that's ALL it's about ESPECIALLY in this society.  Do NOT be duped.  Big business is NOT on your side.  They are on a side to make money
Maybe I missed the point of this article considering all of the negative responses.  Too me the article read, if you keep yourself in the normal catagory, not rail thin and not obese it is easier on your heart.  They pointed out that a size 8 woman is good goal and did best in their study (as well as mentioning the equivalant for a guy).
I read, stay in shape, but don't overdo it.  The article does not say go out and put junk in the trunk or be rail thin, just pointed out another reason why people who exercise and watch what they eat have a better chance of living longer.
Anyone who is discrediting this research as silly needs to step back and reevaluate what the researchers did.

They studied nearly 3000 women over a period of twelve years. Do you really think a study of that magnitude would be purely focused on thighs? I doubt it! Most likely the finding emerged among a plethora of data and inspired some thought on the matter.

What I find more ridiculous is the comments regarding "an excuse to be overweight." The article clearly states it is no excuse, and the benefits stop after a certain size! Common sense.

It's an interesting find, perhaps a clear answer for the correlation will reveal itself some day.
"apples" have skinny legs and big stomachs and just plain thick through the torso....now those people ARE at higher risk for heart disease
"Skinny thighs might mean a chance of heart issues, but I can't stand to see fat, cottage chees, thunder thighs.  Skinny thighs might die younger, but you will have more fun in your life than fat thighs.  Let me see the skinny legs!!"

Good Luck, Ray.  Personally, I can't stand men who are so immature that they qualify a woman's attractiveness and quality of life by what her legs look like.

YAY YAY YAYYYY THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY !!
i knew there had to be an adverse affect related to having such thin thighs (aside from the fact that anyone trying to achieve that level of thinness needing therapy).  curves and shape are sexy and it's about time our society stopped teaching us otherwise.  however, this article is a bit silly as most of us know about the "moderation" concept.
I was more confused by this article than anything.  I'm 5'2" and weight 118lbs, which from what every doctor has ever told me is normal and healthy.  But my thighs definitely aren't as big as this article says they should be.  And having had my weight fluctuate over the years, I know it goes to my butt and midsection, but my thighs stay pretty much the same.  So does this mean there's no hope for me and that I'm doomed to become a statistic just because God didn't give me a body to support bigger thighs?  Is there even a happy medium between skinny thighs and obesity?  I understand how smaller thighs can affect blood flow through and to certain parts of the body, but I think there are so many other factors that play into whether or not you get heart disease or die of other related factors.  Like diet, genetics, amount of exercise.  I just don't believe I'm predisposed to a certain heart condition without my weight and body ballooning to a disproportionate size to have thighs bigger than 23 inches around.
Any of these researchers ever hear of coincidence?  Really, there are plenty of things in life that don't have any real significance at all.  Without some reasoning, I choose to just chalk this up to another one of those things.  Who pays for this stuff???
EquiPro,
I thought the same thing!  Thin thighs/no butts are an attribute of the apple-shaped body, which has already been studied and linked to higher risks of heart disease than pear-shaped bodies.  Why do they only study one part of the body, when it's a total composite?  Or did the media report it this way?
The 60 cm figure at the end of the article doesn't make sense. It can't both be the lower limit and upper limit for risk.
So the good news is that women with fat thighs live longer, and the bad news is that while they live longer they will have fat thighs? How many years will baldness get you?
I love when articles like this are posted, and the skinny anorexic chics come out the woodwork. The article doesn't say you should be overweight. You can be completely healthy and attractive with some meat on your thighs. I am 5'3" 125lbs and I have bigger thighs, only because I work out and they are muscular. Please show me where the article is advocating obesity!!
What I would like to know is how many of OUR TAX DOLLARS WENT INTO THIS RIDICULOUS STUDY??!!!! Drop these stupid studies and give us our money back. Who cares about these studies anyway? Leave us alone and quit worrying us about these bogus ignorant things. Worrying over these things will probably put us in the grave faster than anything. Live your life, quit worrying, quit taking all their stupid drugs with all their side effects that they give you more drugs for. Quit eating fast food. Grow your own food without pesticides and I guarantee you will live a longer life. They are the ones that are trying to kill us!! Wake up people!!
Ok, does of reality... from the moment we were born, we were already working on dying. Thin thighs, fat ankles, transfats, skim everything... Last weeks wonder solution is this weeks poision. Live life to the best of your ability. In the end we all end up biodegradable, although some bits are more toxic than others.
I have been made to feel bad about my "skinny legs" my entire life. My thin legs are genetic, and no amount of exercise can change them in any significant way. Reading this article has just given me one more reason to feel bad about myself. Thanks.
