Is your iPod making you itch?

Spring is here and with it the traditional sounds of allergy season: Sniffling, sneezing, wheezing and “honking.”

But while nearly 35 million Americans cope with everyday allergens like pollen, dust mites or pet dander, there are some itchy souls who suffer from more unusual triggers – nail polish, cockroaches and iPods, to name a few.

“Women will come in with redness on the lids of their eyes,” says Dr. Beth Corn, assistant professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. That’s a telltale sign of nail polish allergy – triggered by a fairly common reaction to the ingredient toluene sulphonamide formaldehyde resin. “I’ll tell them they’re allergic to nail polish and they’ll be shocked. But fingers touch your face a lot, particularly your eyes.”

Another common allergy: cockroach.  “It’s very common in New York City and probably the most common allergen in the asthmatic population in East Harlem,” Corn says.

Indeed, one study found 40 percent of children with asthma in New York City are allergic to cockroaches – or cockroach feces, body parts or secretions – which researchers believe is what’s responsible for the airborne allergens.

Less common – but not less serious – is a celery allergy, which is often found in people who are also allergic to mugwort pollen, onion and chive. “For a certain group of people, when they ingest celery and then exercise, they go into anaphylactic shock,” Corn warns.

Allergic reactions happen when the immune system misinterprets a harmless substance – like a cockroach or the Urban Decay nail polish called “Roach” – as an enemy and goes on the attack.  And while it seems there’s an ever-growing list of allergens, Corn says we’re not becoming more sensitive, just more savvy.

“We’ve become more sophisticated with regard to understanding what allergies are,” she says. “Things that might have been confused with something else in the past are now realized to be allergies. And people are more attuned to understanding that when something repetitive happens, it might actually be a cause-and-effect type of deal.”

Just about everything under the sun can spark an allergic reaction. In fact, some people are actually allergic or sensitive to the sun and will break out in a red itchy rash, or worse, whenever their skin is exposed to sunlight. Others suffer from photoallergic eruption, triggered by the effect of sunlight on a chemical applied to their skin (such as fragrance, cosmetic or sunscreen) or ingested via a prescription (antibiotics, diuretics and certain birth control pills cause this reaction).

While allergies are often confused with the common cold, there are those who are actually allergic to the cold. Winter weather – or even cold food and drink – can cause their skin to get blotchy or break out in hives. Swimming in cold water can even bring on anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening allergic response that affects multiple organ systems of the body.

Nickel is another common allergen that Corn says affects many people, especially those who wear metal jewelry. But it’s not just rings or bracelets that can trigger this allergy. Some people have discovered they’re actually allergic to their jeans, thanks to buttons or rivets or studs containing nickel.

Others have found their beloved cell phones and iPods are making them sick. In October 2008, British dermatologists issued a warning about something they called “mobile phone dermatitis,” a rash traced to the nickel found in the casings of cell phones and iPods. Big talkers with nickel allergies are more prone to the rash, which usually appears on cheeks and ears. But diehard text messagers can also experience outbreaks on their fingertips from tapping the metal menu buttons.

The answer? Dump the studded jeans, spring for 24K gold jewelry and use a headset for your cell phone. Foregoing fancy metallic cell phone frames and decorative logos may also help since that’s where the nickel tends to be found.

The list of oddball allergens goes on:  alcohol, marijuana, hot tubs, deodorant, feminine products, exercise and (tragically, for our expert Dr. Corn) corn.

And, yes, some people are even allergic to sex.

Semen allergies, otherwise known as human seminal plasma hypersensitivity, can result in redness, burning, swelling and even blisters wherever the semen has contacted the skin; in rare cases, having sex with someone to whom you’re allergic can even result in anaphylactic shock. Symptoms usually start within minutes after contact and can last from hours to days. Although men may be at risk, the allergy primarily affects women.

Treatment usually involves “desensitizing” the woman to her partner’s seminal fluid by injecting her with shots containing small doses of semen. Frequent sex is also recommended.

As are condoms – as long as neither partner has a latex allergy, that is.

just inject yourself with i-pod fuilid WD 65
I am one of the lucky ones who is allergic to nickel and had to quit wearing jeans with studs or even uncovered zippers.  In order to find jewelry to wear, I had to start making my own with materials guaranteed not to contain nickel.  Sterling silver is perfect. I am also allergic to gold.
I can just see this article being used to some sex-starved dude's benefit when his girl is having allergies, 'Yeah babe, I think you might be allergic to my semen.  It says we should do it alot, and that'll fix you!'
I have some of the allergies listed. I dont know if having an allergy to one thing makes it more likely to have other allergies or not. I have the metal allergy (no jewelry, belts, even my pants buttons cant touch me) indoor/outdoor allergies (pollen, dust, etc) and the semen allergy. I used to break out really bad, it was scary before i knew what it was.

im also lactose sensitive, and allergic to some vinegars

I do have sensitivity to celery and bananas.  Celery causes painful reflux, and bananas cause diarrhea for me.  Onions don't bother me (I'm not sure about chives), but I'm highly allergic to pollen (I'm miserable in early spring) and can definitely see having allergies to celery.
I am actually allergic to my jeans (which my friends make fun of me all the time for). And it isnt just the rivets, the buttons also make my skin breaks out in hives that wont go away for weeks. Since it is nearly imposible to find jeans that dont have some rivets or even harder buttons i tried covering them with nailpolish which didnt work so i got some liquid stitch(fabric glue), cut up old pairs of jeans and glued the pieces over the rivets. Problem solved! My ears are also alergic to earings, even 24kt gold! So no more earings for me though i am really worried about getting married. It would be horible to be alergic to your wedding and engagement rings!!!
IT's very misleading to single out iphones in your headline. This is the kind of thing that make rumors start, corporate stocks drop and people panic. "Cell phone" would have been more acurate and responsible.
Allergies are so weird - several years ago I became allergic to YELLOW bell peppers.  I ate them all the time, but one day I wound up in the ER with a severe reaction.  I tested negative for the allergy from the serum in the lab, but the doc had me buy yellow, red and green peppers and bring them to his office.  Sure enough, I was severely allergic to the juice from the yellow pepper, a little less to the red, and even less to the green.  The doctor said it was the first time he has seen a pepper allergy, let alone one that varied by the color of the vegetable.
THat explains it all!
You have not included in the human semen allergy that sexual partners of US troops that were exposed to depleted uranium have also shown severe reactions after the soldiers returned home. Since some of the children have been born with birth defects, it is important not to confuse an allergy to human semen plasma with a reaction to "radioactive" sperm. This has been well documented as far back as Gulf War I, but not known widely.
just a warning for you corn-sensitive people out there!

i have a corn allergy.  what i didn't expect was a connected reaction to latex. the latex gloves i wore a few years at work, while nonpowdered, had a starch coating on the inside.  what kind of starch?  you guessed it!  corn starch!  result: latex sensitivity too.  :-(
people allergic to nickel may also be able to wear platinum and sterling silver. (Not all can, but it worked for me) If not allergic to nail polish they can cover the metal parts in jeans and clothes with nail polish.
So what I'm left to think here is that the ipod is the only music player capable of causing rashes due to nickel in the casing. Funny how you didn't seem to name a specific cell phone in your article. You just lumped cell phones all together. Why is the ipod the only specifically named electronic device in this article. This will obviously make my decision to purchase a ipod much easier as now I know it is the only portable music player capable of giving me a rash!
My nephew used to have to wear his shirts tucked in- whether he wanted to or not- because the button and belt buckle would give him a rash around his little belly-button.  He's 17 years old now and I don't know if he still reacts to metal like that.  I'll have to ask now.
I don't see what's so "oddball" about deodorant or feminine product allergies.  Both are made with synthetic ingredients, unless you buy the all-natural brands from a health-food store. Even so called unscented commercial deodorant, likewise many commercial "unscented" soaps, still has a "masking fragrance" in it.  Makes you wonder what else is in this stuff that smells so bad they have to cover it up.

And yes, I have a deodorant allergy (took me forever to find a natural brand that worked for more than a few hours) and a feminine product allergy (to a lesser degree than the deodorant, thankfully.
Don't forget the wonderful world of mastocytosis where your body is in a state of constant allergic state and you never know what will cause you to trip the thin line into anaphalaxis.
wow
ipods making you itch?
what next?
I don't have an iPod, but my wife does. Now I know what's causing this itchy rash, sneedzing, watery eyes, runny nose and cough.

Apple should have to compensate me for the horrific days and nights I've had to endure - all the pain, suffering, and humiliation.

Come on, Trial Bar - where are you guys on this crisis?
IF THEY ARE ALLERGIC TO AN IPOD its because they are allergic to METAL.
It would seem that having to be injected with the semen from each lover might be an obstacle to promiscuity :)
So if you have a nickle/semen/latex allergy, you can't have unprotected sex because you couldn't call 911 for help?...that's explains my great Aunt's perpetual bad mood.....and singleness...
"Although men may be at risk, the allergy primarily affects women."

I wonder if the reason women are more affected is because the man would rather be with another man? A sort of biological passive aggressive act. Or maybe it's just something he eats...
One of my friends son is allergic to his asthma treatment mask. He always has a rash on his face because of it. Has anyone ever heard of this?
nice article. Thank goodness you didn't legitimize my son's 'but I'm allergic to homework' lament
I'm allergic to water. That's another weird one. My skin is, so when I swim or take a shower, I get an itchy hives-like rash all on my back and torso.
"I wonder if the reason women are more affected is because the man would rather be with another man?"

Did you really, seriously contemplate this statement before you posted it??
You think a WOMAN would be allergic to semen because the MAN want to be with another MAN?!?  Do you realize how ridiculous a statement like that is?

Does that mean that, conversely, MEN can be allegic to WOMEN who'd like to sleep with other WOMEN?
...doesn't make much sense, does it?
