Black and white twins: Brothers from the same mother

Some things aren’t always black and white. Then again, sometimes they are – like the twin sons born July 11 to a German couple.

The first baby that was born, Ryan, has light skin and blue eyes. His brother, Leo, is dark-skinned with brown eyes.

"None of us could believe it," the maternity ward's head doctor, Birgit Weber, told one news source. "Both kids have definitely the same father."

Stephan Gerth is German and white. His wife, Florence Addo-Gerth, is from Ghana and has dark skin.

It was “a real surprise,” Gerth told the German newspaper Die Welt, adding that the most important thing to him isn’t color, but that everyone is healthy.

VIDEO: These brothers are a very rare pair

The odds are one in a million, say doctors, but it can happen with fraternal twins due the genetic soup in our backgrounds. Peter Propping, former director of the Institute for Human Genetics at Bonn University, told Die Welt that the black mother may have had some white ancestors, or that the white father may have had black ones. Very occasionally, the roll of the DNA die may cause the baby of biracial parents to inherit only the genetic coding for one color.

Rare though they are, the German twins do have some company. In the past few years, at least three mixed race couples have welcomed twins who were also black and white.

In 1993, another set of black and white twins was born to the Dutch couple, Wilma and Willem Stuart, but it turned out to be a case of an in-vitro mix-up. The parents, who are both Caucasian, were mystified when the twins were born, but fell deeply in love with both of them. However, after about a year, genetic tests revealed that while one of the twins was biologically related to both parents, the other twin was not.

The hospital called it a “deeply regrettable mistake.” It soon became apparent that a device similar to a large eyedropper had been used twice, causing another man’s sperm to be mixed with Willem’s. The couple remembers two other couples in the waiting room the day of the procedure. One of them was black.

Being of different races and coming from different fathers hasn’t stopped the Stuart boys from closely bonding. While the dark-skinned boy did eventually meet the man who was his biological father, the brothers consider themselves full twins. In 2005, they attended a twins festival and proudly won the “Least alike twins” award.”

“For the two boys, being celebrated for their differences finally answered all the questioning looks, nasty teasing, and outright expressions of disbelief they've endured all these years,” Wilma Stuart told Dateline, which has been following the family since 1993.

Stephan Gerth and Florence Addo-Gerth, the parents of the newest set of “black and white” twins, know they’ll face some incredulous stares.

"I imagine sitting in a playground where the other mothers will call me crazy when I tell them the boys are twins," Florence told www.peacefmonline.com.

Like all siblings, their differences are more than skin deep. The twins also have distinctly different personalities, say their parents. Leo, the dark-skinned baby, is quieter; Ryan, his light-skinned brother, is temperamental. "When he's hungry, he's hard to stop,” said the mother.

She says her children were born looking exactly as they should. "God has decided that my children should have different skin colors," she says.

Wow, what a beautiful set of twins, these little babies are so handsome! Let us as humans begin to erace the word "race" from our vocabulary. Let us recognize that we all are part of only one race, and that is the human race. And the human race, by God's design has produced millions of people with many beautiful shades of color.
As soon as the genome gets mapped I'm sure you can choose.
It's not the skin color, it's what comes from deep inside, it's what's in the heart, that matters. God loves us all regardless
I don't see why everyone is so shocked by this occurence. Lets put things into perspective here, we live in a world that is over 6.5 BILLION people and though there are still the horrible, closed minded people who believe that there is actually something to 'racial purity'(which, by the way, is genetically false, we all share 99.9% of the same DNA- its only the .01% that makes us unique), one in a million odds leaves us with a whole lot of mixed skin color twins.
Glad to see all the understanding comments.  It is sad that the religious, conservatives where I live are the most racist people you could ever know.  In one case a pastor prevented the grandmother of a biracial child from from entering the community church with the child.  Being a conservative, christian doesn't necessarly make you a good person.
This is the case of non-identical twins (as opposed to Identical twins who share the same set of genes), very similar to normal siblings. In other words, these are not what are termed as "nature's clones".  This is very very common, just that when the "non-identical" twins are of the same color, nobody notices the differences.

What is the big deal here, especially since the parents are of different races ?  I think this would have been news, if the parents were of the same race and twins (or siblings) of a color different from the parents' color, emerged.
My boyfriend and I have 2 children together. I am fairly light skinned, blond hair, and very blue eyes. My boyfriend is African-American and has fairly dark skin. One of our children has all of my features including the light skin and blue eyes and the other is darker with curly hair and brown eyes. When my son and his father are out somewhere, people often question him and act as if he has kidnapped him. It can be hurtful to the both of them.It is sad and I hope that my son does not have a difficult time later in life by his peers, but I am afraid that he will.  God Bless the happy couple and their beautiful babies.
EVERYONE OF US IS UNIQUE. IF GOD MADE US ALL THE SAME, WHAT A BORING WORLD THIS WOULD BE. BLESS THE COUPLE AND FAMILY.
I have a rainbow family and I am from a rainbow family.  I am half Anglo and half Mexican.  I was adopted by a Mexican and an African- American.  I married a Mexican and adopted 2 blue eyed, blonde haired Anglo Children.....It is love that makes a famliy not race or blood!!!!
i agree not so unusual especially to african americans.  this article acts like there are only 4 in the world, misleading i think.
i have cuzns who are twins one very dark skin, brown hair and short; while the other is very fair skinned, blondish color hair, and green eyes.  they are not biracial, just african american...although mom has creole background, just black people.
It'so god dan gooood to have twins from black and white one color like the dad, and one color like the mother,    Loooooooooooooooove it very much good lucky,
I think the media has serious issues! These are clearly two black babies. One is darker with curly hair. The other twin is not as dark with straight hair-for now. How ignorant some can be, all for the sake of sensationalism.
Why is this news? Just look at any Puerto Rican, Cuban, Brazilian or other "carillo" type country to see that our genetic mish-mash is not a miracle, just another variation on what makes us all unique- our chromosomes.  Now, a baby that was born talking and could explain that fraternal twins do not have identical chromosomes and therefore often do look different- THAT would be a true miracle!
These twins are blessed to have 2 cultures to experience. They are a gift from God and are beautiful.
Someone made the comment about if race were not such an issue in this country it would not have made the news.  Read the article again, this couple lives in Germany.  Not here in the US.  God did make each one of us different.  What a boring world it would be if we were all alike!
maybe big news in germany, but to america and african americans not so new, article makes it seem as though there are only 4 known in the world!
plenty of cases in america though, even more stark differences than these two, the light baby is not all that fair...
i have cousins who are NOT mixed race twins, one is dark w/dark hair, dark eyes and short; the other tall, fair, green eyes so what is the big deal?
It's a blessing to see thaat these people of different races can have such beautiful babies that are so wonderfully made in the image of the Almighty. We have to accept the fact that they are family, its just that their skins are a different colour! People of this world have to look past race and see that these boys are just that, BOYS! Congrats to the happy parents, I hope that I am that fortunate one day...........You guys are beautiful!!
I agree with the mom....God wanted her kids to have different skin colours. People are People... no matter what. Thats God's way of showing us that we are all one...
There is no such thing as the black, white, yellow, brown RACE,as society has labled. There is only ONE race and that is the human race! Praise God almighty!!
Wow, that explains this bizarre thing in my native village in souther part of India. I met this family where one of the kids had fair skin blue eyes and blond hair while the other siblings had dark skin, black hair like most Indians. May be this gene was dormant and got exposed only now after several generations.
Several decades ago there was English military camp by our village!!
God bless them all. They are a wonderful looking family and may the angels smile upon them.
I think it's wonderful! Hope the parents are doing well and the babies remain healthy!
Sorry, but no miracle here!  I am Black and my husband is White.  Two of our boys have dark brown hair, brown eyes and coffee with cream skin tones.  My third son is very blonde with a strawberries and cream complexion.  He had bright blue eyes until about three and now his eyes are blue-gray.  People are sometimes puzzled by this because my husband is brown haired and brown eyed like myself.  Remember, our genetic wells run deep and the combinations are endless and sometimes quite surprising!
Congratulations to the lucky parents.. I hope that when my husband and I have kids, they come out as healthy and beautiful as the twins.. forget about color, race and creed..God bless.. One love
This is Awesomeness!!! That's all I can say=D
Two beautiful, healthy, wonderful babies, best wishes for health and happiness to the family!  But I think the media turning this into "news" is sad.  I was glad to read everyone being supportive and aware of the media's shortsightedness.
I've been out of genetics for two decades But this does seem to support the idea that the genetic material on this matter is additive rather than solely dominant-recessive.

You shouldn't be surprised.  When you read the history of any place in this world, you would be surprised "who" was there and how many languages were and still be spoken.  No ethnic group disappears as you might think.  I am sure that there are countless descendants of irish people who were slaved by vikings, for example.  The Turkic people are made of different ethnic groups of which some mixed with mongols and lituaneses, for example.  When we are born, we are already mixed.  We should have the right to reflex any of our ancestors.
They are adorable and the parents seem delightful-best wishes! What an amazing blessing!
If anyone out there was following the scientists, g-nome project, several articles have been published in "Scientific Journals" internationally, We on this planet are so arrogant, We have all come from that vast gene pool!!
there is 4 kids in my family im the only one dark complexed and the others are light skin. they are beautiful babies. i wish them good luck.
Whether it's all that unusual or not, you have to admit it's pretty cool. (And I am VERY happy to see references to other such births in the article. I read a similar article not too long ago with no references at all!)

I personally have not known anyone with twins of different colors, and twins themselves are rare enough. It's just one more example of the wonders of nature and the human body. Every new baby is amazing, these twins just happen to be a little more unique. I hope that it will be a positive thing in their lives.
I am 1/2 native american and 1/2 italian.  So, dark hair, brown eyes, olive skin.  I married a scots/irish/english/scandinavian w/red hair and blue eyes. My oldest son is exactly my coloring.  All the boys have brown eyes, but one is nearly blond.  My daughter, on the other hand, is so white I tease her that she "glows in the dark".  She has wheat colored hair and eyes so light they are "silvery-blue". All are TREASURES!
I think that is wonderful!!!congratulations to the parents. My husband is african american and am indian from trinidad i can't wait to see what our little one will look like...
I am a brunette, with olive skin and brown eyes like my dad.  My sister is a blonde with blue eyes like my mom.  this is not uncommon in Brazil.  These babies are gorgeous.  God bless them.
As a multiracial child myself, I welcome them to a world of universal identity.  Belonging and understanding a world without boundaries because they belong to all.  Amazing what is considered news worthy in an age where we should be past this.  This has happened time and time again just not reported. I had friends from Jamaica who are bi-racial twins but their hair folicles swapped,  The causacian girl- porcelain rose complexion, blonde with pale blue eyes with her father's "coarse" hair & her sister beautiful african features. Deep golden brown, slight nasal flair, almond dark eyes but with her mother's texture of hair only deep brown. "The white one got the 'touch of the brush'", is what their family would say.

Maybe the world will mature enough to just put "human" as the box we have to check off when asked to identify "race".  I can't tell you the look of horror on my teacher's faces when it came to standardized tests. "Are you asking me to lie and deny my mother or my father?"  Got'em every time :)

For the Mom, just tell those strangers what my mother told them when they asked if I was adopted especially in the summer when the African- Seminole parts came out in all their beautiful glory. "I have the stretch marks to prove it, wanna see?"
To the lady who claims descent from "Pocahontas,"
you are another victim of a folk tale. Matoaka was Powhatan, not Blackfoot or Cherokee, and she was not a princess either contrary to what a lot of people claiming descent state. Please do not propagate this racist fantasy.
Out of curiosity, what family name are you descended from?
They are beautiful babies! I have 4 children and one is dark skinned and three are white. My story is a little different than twins. My oldest is the dark one and her father is Nigerian. The younger three are white and their father is white. You should see the looks we get (my oldest gets) when we are all out in public together. Our society needs to understand that anymore the color of your skin shouldn't be the issue, but what morals and values a person has. Good luck with those beautiful boys!!
To Amy in Orlando,
Your kids are not biracial. Latinos are culturally and ethnically different from Anglos, but not a different race. Hispanic people are Caucasian, just as are people from India and Fiji with even darker skin than some Africans. Let's not try to confer even more "racial" differences or special classes than there already even have to be. As this German couple shows, such delineations are going the way of the dinosaurs.
COngratulations!  GOd has blessed you with two lovely twins.  Color doesn't matter.  Give thanks that they are healthy.
No fair, I'm dark hair and eyes and will probably never have a light haired/eyed child.  I noticed the 4 statistics you gave were English blood mixed with other blood.  I have an English boyfriend, we each have kids of our own and decided not to have one together.  I wonder now what our child might have looked like.
There are twins (1 white, 1 black) who by now should be in their mid to late 20s that where born in England. Is anything known about their whereabouts
It just reminds us that we all are from one papa
Adam.God made one man and one woman and from them
all ethnic groups came from.
If those doctors are that suprised, someone should give them a copy of"Spencer Well's Journey of Man",people of their education should not be suprised of such simple occurence.
I agree with those who think this occurrence is un-amazing. One baby is really dark skinned and the other is dark skinned. Neither is actually "white." Like others have said, with bi-racial parents there's a great chance the babies they have will range in skin tone. Also, to comment on the person who said "most fraternal twins don't look alike"...that's pretty much the definition of fraternal twins...Great for them that they have two healthy babies though.
Congratulations on your wonderful new boys! -and- a very warm welcome to 'The Parenting Club'. Blessings to all.
I have twin cousins born to Puerto Rican parents.  One is a brunette with tanned skin and the other is blond, blue eyed and very white.  Now I understand that this is not impossible and nothing new.  But I think people are just fascinated with twins.  The recent twins are very different from each other.  When my cousins were born this was the talk of the small town we lived in.  Cases like this impress people period!  Now the boys are just adorable!!!!  I hope they have a life filled with love and joy, like every child deserves.  I wish them (and all children) health and success in everything they do.
Can someone post a link about the twin boys (named Thomas and Wesley) in England who are black (Thomas) and white (Wesley)?  They were born in the 1980s, so they should be in their early 20s now.

Back to this story...God bless these beautiful angels and their families!
Praise be to God.  This is a rare chance to have twins and an even rarer chance to have children of a different skin color and be from the same father.  This is truly one of God's miracles.
God has blessed you with children. We are grandparents of twin girls and I must tell you our hearts are filled with joy. Happiness with joy will follow you through out life as you both raise your twins.
