Now that really stinks! Scientists blame bug for bad breath

There’s no question that humans are smelly creatures — from our stinky feet to our putrid arm pits. There’s not much we can do except scrub with soap and mask our odors with deodorant.

But if the malodorous stench is coming from your mouth, scientists are closing in on the cause. Blame a bug —Solobacterium moorei, to be specific.

Researchers at the State University Of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine have identified a tongue bacteria that they say is associated with severe bad breath, Reuters reported.

Not much is known about the bacteria strain, although the researchers said it originally comes from, gag, human feces.

So it seems Dr. Billy Goldberg was right after all when he blamed the “poop fairy” for bad breath (back when Body Odd was a podcast).

Halitosis can be a sign of a medical problem such as liver or kidney disease, but even when it’s not that serious, it’s embarrassing and distressing — and often equally awful for innocent bystanders. It can kill your love life and make life miserable for your co-workers.

In a small study of people with chronic bad breath and a group without, the researchers collected culture samples by scraping an area of the tongue’s surface. They also used a halimeter (bad breath machine) to rank the participants’ breath from “no appreciable odor” to “extremely foul.” They found the S. moorei bacteria in every one of the participants who had halitosis. Only a few of the subjects who didn’t have halitosis had the bacteria, and all of them had a gum infection, which can eventually cause halitosis.

Men were more likely to have the bacteria than women, although it wasn’t clear why.

Most people worry about bad breath sometimes, although the researchers estimated that fewer than a third actually do have hard-core halitosis.

With the finding, the researchers are hoping that new treatments can be developed to help rid us of the stinky breath scourge. So maybe someday you’ll be freed from constantly chewing breath mints or compulsively cupping your hands around your mouth and nose to see if you offend.

Regular bad breath is usually caused by volatile sulfur compounds, or simple bacteria. It’s also connected to dry mouth or respiratory tract infections, sinus infections or gastrointestinal problems.

If you don’t actually have S. moorei, but just want to get rid of simple morning mouth, there are some things you can do (and should, for the sake of fellow man).

Commercial mouthwashes don’t do the trick for long, although brushing your teeth for several minutes and scraping your tongue helps. Drinking green tea may also help control it.

“You have bad breath” can be tough to say to someone you like. Maybe now it’ll be easier: just say, “Excuse me, I think you have Solobacterium moorei. Would you like some gum?”

Vote: Have you ever told someone "You have bad breath?"

Re: Smelly Teen Feet - with changing hormones, odor causing bacteria and fungus can flourish, but there are ways to beat it. First, wash feet AT LEAST morning and night with antibacterial soap; clean especially well around and under toenails using a soft brush (toothbrush works) and scraping under the nails; wear white cotton socks, colored socks and nylons or artificial materials in socks keeps the feet wet which only makes the situation worse; open shoes up to dry every time you take them off, and wear sandals or slippers at home to give shoes time to dry, which will keep the bacteria from growing; if you can, alternate shoes at least evey other day, and try to wear shoes that will breathe; Finally, body odor can definately be made worse with certain foods, so if you notice that after eating garlic or something else the smell is worse the next day, try to either eat smaller amounts or don't ear the offending food at all.
To the mnother of the daughter in shcool whose "breath smells like pee"...you should have a doctor see her, that is not a normal thinng to have to go through and since their are several diseases and disorders that make themselves known with bad breath, this could be one of them. Especially if she is allready doing all she can to change this unfortunate condition, now would be the time to seek professional medical help! Not only could whatever is really causing the "pee breath" have even worse physical consezuences if left unchecked, the psychological problems that will most likely result from having this condition at such a socially importan age can be devistating! Definately, get her some help!
To: Embarassed Hygienist - I didn't know tonsililith's was what I've had for 20 some years. Back when I was 20 yrs. old I removed a few of mine with a straw because I could feel them and it grossed me out when I coughed one out. Then I developed a very bad sore throat (it was so bad that I went to a doctor) and the doctor thought I might have had pasta for dinner!  After I recovered from the sore throat, I started ignoring them and have never had anymore problems. I don't know own or think I'd try a Water Pik, but it would probably be a more sanitary way.
Funny thing is that just before I saw this web site (about 10 min. ago) my 7 year old was complaining about a sore throat and when I looked down his throat with a flashlight, I saw a tonsililith's! He did have chicken lemon rice soup for dinner - could be a piece of rice! Ha, Ha!  A case of Strep Throat was found in his classroom, I'll keep an eye on him since they could be related.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to do more reasearch on tosililith's, but don't plan on taking out my tonsils. I believe they have a lot more benefits then we thought back in the 70's when they were yanking them out left and right. Who knows, maybe ours are working right and not sending the bacteria to other parts of our bodies!
To parent of teen son with foot odor:
Along with washing his feet and changing his socks at the end of each day (or before a night out on the town) here are a couple of other things you can try:
Make sure to buy shoes big enough to fit an odor eater type insert. They are cheaper then buying a new pair of shoes every month - you just change them when the shoes start stinking too much. I tend to buy the cheaper store bought brands because then you can change them more often. I also found that the ones with charcoal in them tend to put black marks on white socks, so I shy away from them.
You should also try spraying his shoes with a fabric odor remover at night. Just a couple of sprays seems to do the trick and it should dry up within the hour.  When I get home I spray my shoes as well as the socks that I am wearing. Then I don't have to run to the bathroom to wash my feet and change my socks right away. I works great!
I also sprinkle a tiny bit of odor power on my feet before putting on my socks. I don't use this in my shoes though, as it will eventually cause a white cloud of dust to escape when your shoes get too much build up. My husband uses this method as well, along taking off his shoes every chance he can - much to my, and our kids, disapproval on car rides!
The use of warm salt water, apart from every thing else can halp. But the use of the tounge on other parts of the the body when haveing sex could explain why the bactera is found in the mouth. And as we come in contact with other people,u know what happens after that.

For mouth odor, as some have said, curtailing candidas in the body with garlic can help a lot. There are books on ridding the body of candidas overgrowth; perhaps reading one is in order.  Tongue scraping and flossing work, as does using a mouthwash that curtails bacteria for 12 hours...

For stinky feet and armpits, I use Crystal deodorant, which is natural minerals and stops the odors completely.  Beware of washing too much, since stripping the natural oils of the body can change how our bodies react to things. (Like washing one's face too much to get rid of acne usually makes it worse.)

As for the tonsilliths, I too have them, and I regularly clean them out of my tonsils (those that I can get to) with the half-tube-shaped end of a nail groomer, used for only that purpose. (It has a pointed end on one side, and the curved, half-tube end on the other.)  Be very careful to not poke, but gently open the tonsils, and you can clean a lot.  (Yes it took a while to get over the gag reflex, but I can actually breathe better after I've done a cleaning.)  I have a magnifying mirror and a mini-led flashlight to aid in my routine.

I've seen steam-cleaners for toothbrushes, but have never purchased one.  In light of this article, perhaps buying one would be a good idea, because then it's a sterilized toothbrush every time I brush.
My husband has really bad breath even after he brushes his teeth and uses mouth wash.  Could it be something that is not in his mouth that is causing the bad breath, such as something in his stomach?  He is doing a whole-body cleanse right now--would that help?
Try to take some Pre-biotics (help the probiotic to grow) and Probiotics  (good bacteria) especially after taking antibiotics.
To: Embarrassed Dental Hygienist you are not alone I had this problem from my early 20's and finally saw an ear, nose, throat Doctor in my late 30's who examined my throat and agreed that I should have my tonsils removed.  After surgery he said I had a really bad case of tonsilitis.  Now I still have the tongue bacteria but I brush my tongue, floss and use a mounthwash that contains Hydrogen peroxide and it has really helped.
My 4 year old Great Granddaughter Cricket told me I better go brush my teeth or she was going to puke!
FLOSS FLOSS FLOSS. Much of bad breath is caused by rotting food between teeth. Brushing WILL NOT remove it - you must floss thoroughly, get right in there to the gumline!  Get your teeth professionally cleaned AT LEAST TWICE per year.  You may need more than a standard cleaning if it's been a while. Rinse with dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide...do not ever swallow it, however. Stay away from dairy, caffeine, sugar and bread/pasta.  Drink plenty of water.
I am suprised no one mentioned this, but saw it on Oprah when dr. Oz was on. For the feet problem, soak in strong black tea everyday, eliminates foot odor.
For stinky feet, try pouring hydrogen peroxide in all your shoues.  Wear flip flops when they are drying.  When they dry out, they will be disinfected.  You can also soak feet in hydrogen peroxide every night.  this will trun them white for awhile.
I love to kiss, but I cannot kiss my husband except on the mouth ... and even then, it's not fun.  Yes, he has that horrid smell often on his breath.  It's been enough to make me completely turned-off to intimacy at times.  I hope these tips work; I will methodically help him try each method to help cure this unfortunate ailment. Thank you for sharing your insight, each of you.
Putting shoes in the freezer overnight may help the foot odor problem.
For stinky feet shake some (about a TBS) baking soda into shoes and let them set over night. Dump it out the next morning and you will be amazed at the difference.
To Jodi of Lockport - please read this article before offering that advice to any more mothers.  http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/03/06/733996.aspx  What may have been ok 9 years ago could kill a baby today!
some other treatments for stinky feet
1. soak feet in listerine
2. coat clean dry feet with vicks vapor rub at night and put on socks.
good luck
For bad breath: First, brush with Baking soda, and use a tongue scraper lightly.  Rinse with peroxide, but don't swallow.
For smelly feet: clean feet on a regular basis, if the shoes smell you need to get rid of them and get new ones - Cotton socks - they will absorb the sweat.
soak smelly feet in a cup of apple cider vinegar in a pan of water
i hav had bad breath for 7 years. it was due to tonsil stones. No amount of flossing, brushing, scraping, rinsing (listerine, chlorine dioxide etc)stopped d problem. Sucidal? u bet!Tonsils removal? went thro that many times in my mind.
my girlfriend has it 2 so i know how horrendous it can b. once the stones r removed, the smell goes off n so does the taste in d mouth.
my stones r normally from a post nasal drip channel next 2 my right tonsil at the back of the right side of the throat. there is a small polyp blocking this channel n i c stones lodge here that r very difficult 2 dislodge.
Yes, stress, diet, not enough sleep, hormonal changes (ladies) all aggravate the problem.
I have been experimenting with antibiotics n for a
while it worked. i started thinking of antibiotics
after my dad had his appendix removed. he had bad breath for many years sometimes so bad u could smell it from d back seat of the car.
On day of his operation his breath was so foul (i  remembered d doctors using d term "highly dehydrated") but guesssed what he doesnt have halitosis anymore or that "old folk smell" which some doctors told me is normal.
i knew they gave him antibiotics during n after the operation so i guessed that must be it.

Can someone tell me what antibiotics i need 2 take 4 S. moorei?
Ps : here s some points 2 ponder
    * my mum never had bad breath a single day of
      her life
    * my ex-wife hav the sweetest breath...alway
      fresh.. even in d mornin.
    * my youngest daughter had tonsils stones but
she did not have bad breath. she was still
drinking a lot of milk formulas from a milk
bottle right until she was 8 years old.
    * i never had bad breath till 2001 although
i had tonsil stones prior 2 that.
To "Embarassed Hygienist" and others with same problem: I also have tonsil stones (tonsililiths) and have found that gargling with "Therabreath" really works. Dislodges the yucky, smelly stones and makes your mouth feel good and smell better.
One remedy i know for foot odor is a mixture of distilled water and alum crystals. Dissolve the alum crystals in the water and pour it into an atomizer.  Wash feet thoroughly when bathing and spray the mixture to feet and let dry before wearing socks.  You can also spray the mixture inside the shoes but let it dry before using it. This is very effective. But remember to change socks everyday.  Good luck!
O.K. I had bad breath, those small hard balls, and here is what worked for me. I use saline nasal spray in each nostril, let it soak, then spit it out. The little hard balls the embarrased hygenists called, tonsililiths will be a thing of the past, including the bad breath. Use this along with your normal mouth hygine regime and your breath will always be clean. Stay away from junk food, caffine, smoking, and refined foods will also help and help you stay healthy. Go natural and stay away from harmful drugs (ie.,prescriptions)you will feel much, much better.
Everything here is very informative but not sure what I should really do or what it is exactly.  I came home yesterday and I was told that I stink, not from body but from my nose and mouth; when I talk, my family can’t stand being around me.  I can’t even eat with them b/c I’m told that the air I’m breathing out is unbearable; and of course I’m unable to smell it b/c it’s coming from me.  I’m told that it’s REALLY BAD and I don’t know what to do.
This is the third time this has happened to me in the last three yrs.  The first two times, it was really bad dieting, I was eating fast food for dinner late at night and sometimes my hunger takes over and that is when I noticed stomach acid.  So I was told by a doctor that it was the stomach acid that was coming up.  Now, I have no idea why this foul smell is coming out of me, my diet for the last 3 months have been the same; no change in food, I even drink 2-3 cups of green tea a day on a regular basis.
Please help.  I’m really self-conscious at work that people around me may smell it and I have no idea how to control it.
Your breath stinks in the mornings because of what you eat.
