Now that really stinks! Scientists blame bug for bad breath

There’s no question that humans are smelly creatures — from our stinky feet to our putrid arm pits. There’s not much we can do except scrub with soap and mask our odors with deodorant.

But if the malodorous stench is coming from your mouth, scientists are closing in on the cause. Blame a bug —Solobacterium moorei, to be specific.

Researchers at the State University Of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine have identified a tongue bacteria that they say is associated with severe bad breath, Reuters reported.

Not much is known about the bacteria strain, although the researchers said it originally comes from, gag, human feces.

So it seems Dr. Billy Goldberg was right after all when he blamed the “poop fairy” for bad breath (back when Body Odd was a podcast).

Halitosis can be a sign of a medical problem such as liver or kidney disease, but even when it’s not that serious, it’s embarrassing and distressing — and often equally awful for innocent bystanders. It can kill your love life and make life miserable for your co-workers.

In a small study of people with chronic bad breath and a group without, the researchers collected culture samples by scraping an area of the tongue’s surface. They also used a halimeter (bad breath machine) to rank the participants’ breath from “no appreciable odor” to “extremely foul.” They found the S. moorei bacteria in every one of the participants who had halitosis. Only a few of the subjects who didn’t have halitosis had the bacteria, and all of them had a gum infection, which can eventually cause halitosis.

Men were more likely to have the bacteria than women, although it wasn’t clear why.

Most people worry about bad breath sometimes, although the researchers estimated that fewer than a third actually do have hard-core halitosis.

With the finding, the researchers are hoping that new treatments can be developed to help rid us of the stinky breath scourge. So maybe someday you’ll be freed from constantly chewing breath mints or compulsively cupping your hands around your mouth and nose to see if you offend.

Regular bad breath is usually caused by volatile sulfur compounds, or simple bacteria. It’s also connected to dry mouth or respiratory tract infections, sinus infections or gastrointestinal problems.

If you don’t actually have S. moorei, but just want to get rid of simple morning mouth, there are some things you can do (and should, for the sake of fellow man).

Commercial mouthwashes don’t do the trick for long, although brushing your teeth for several minutes and scraping your tongue helps. Drinking green tea may also help control it.

“You have bad breath” can be tough to say to someone you like. Maybe now it’ll be easier: just say, “Excuse me, I think you have Solobacterium moorei. Would you like some gum?”

Vote: Have you ever told someone "You have bad breath?"

Once upon a time, I was a radio dj in Richmond, VA. I stumbled upon a dentist who had a halimeter like the one used in this article. For grins, I sent my stunt guy, Steve Leonard, to the aforementioned dentist to compare Steve's breath with that of a dog.

The dog's was better.

I'm betting that it was because dogs aren't susceptible to colonization by S. moorei.
I have my 15 year old with tremendous feet problem  I have to ask him to take his shoes and socks out side every night please help!!!!!!!
maybe now more people will follow their drs and dental hygienist's advice and parents whose kids hate to brush can use the bug/poop in your mouth to strongly encourage their kids to brush, floss and swish 2x daily.i will pass this on to everyone i know with little kids.
How does someone get rid of the bug?

Angela Knowles San Franscico,CA.
I heard that if you leave your toothbrushes out on the sink, the spray from flushing is dispersed throughout the room and it is full of bacteria.  I wonder if this is how the "poop bugs" get into your mouth?  In any case, perhaps putting your toothbrushes in a cabinet and not the open bathroom air would help!
Diet has to do with bad breath.  Also caffeine.  Stop eating junk and coffee for a couple of days and see the difference!
Brush, floss and buy yourself a good tongue scraper, use it a couple times per day and find a toothpaste and mouthrinse with chlorine dioxide,(ie - Oxyfresh), it neutralizes the volatile sulfur compounds. Get a check up and an evaluation for periodontal disease, it can affect your breath, oral and overall health.
I'm very surprised that no one knows this. The bacteria that live in our mouths, especially in the nooks and crannies of our tongues, produce Hydrogen Sulfide crystals (H2S) which smell bad. If you rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2),the (H2S) is chemically converted into Hydrogen Sulfate (HSO4)which is orderless and tasteless. The difference it makes is quite amazing, the mouthwash and breath mint people would go out of business if word got out. Maybe that's why we're kept in the dark about it.
From personal experience, bad breath seem worse when I'm constipated.  To all those with halitosis, avoid dairy products and gargle with warm water with salt instead of mouthwash.  Also, try Amosan for the gums.  Please be sensitive to people with bad breath  as they have feelings too and most likely are very depressed about it.
butt breath takes on a whole new meaning..
Raul,
Soak your teen's feet in White vinegar for 20 minutes and have him wash his feet every day with antibacterial soap.  If possible get new shoes and socks.  I do this once a year and have no oder problems with my feet.
Hmm...very interesting.  I'm glad I finally know what causes feculent breath.
if more people would brush their tongues when they brush their teeth that would help...
FEET PROBLEM -- Get antibacterial soap and wash feet well every day.  Odor will go away in a few days.
hiya my names is jharn and i want to say i hate science  so why do people talk about the rubbish thing???
tell him to use underarm deodorant on his feet and or socks.  You can also use it on his shoes.  It will remove odor in his shoes.  It will also eliminate the odor problem with his feet.
The problem with your 15 yr old is that he eats the wrong stuff. If you eat a lot of Parmesan or romano cheese. Or hot dogs or foods with garlic and peperoni. That will make not only your feet stink but the whole body. You should give him large salads with a lot of Alfalfa sprouts and 3 tablets of alfalfa 3 times a day to deodorize the body.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes
Wow who knew that stinky breath was connected to faeces. How does it get in the mouth?
flossing is probably the most important thing you can do to keep your mouth clean after brushing.

it also helps your gums which will keep them from getting infected

FLOSS people
Wouldn't taking an antibiotic specific to this type of bacteria get rid of it?
This shows how important it is to have good oral hygiene, and not only that, but how important it is to always wash your hands, especially after using the bathroom - and I mean really washing.  I, for one, wash my hands everytime I come home from being out in public.  It's the first thing I do, and I wash thoroughly.  I do believe it's one of the main reasons I rarely get ill.
Though it sounds odd,the problem of smelly feet can be helped in some cases by standing in the bathtub and urinating on the feet.It is thought the uric acid in urine helps to control the smell.
I used to have halitosis bad until my dentist told me to gargle with hydrogen peroxide for a half minute and then use mouthwash.  I did and whoo-lah, no more bad breath.  Repeat as needed.
I use Periogen every day or so which kills the smelly bacteria
@Angela:
If one believes the literature, only products with chlorine dioxide will actually kill the mouth bacteria. Mouthwashes like Listermint are probably not effective, and only mask the odor.
Re - Foot Odor -
ONLY ONLY ONLY use "Odor Eater" socks.
ONLY ONLY ONLY use WHITE Socks ( Odor Eaters )
Have him shower daily, or bathe daily.
Bug him to actually bother to WASH his feet, not just stand in the shower. Use a washcloth to scrub dead skin cells off.
Use Foot fungus medicine if needed.
Less sugar + less carbs if it's a candida problem.

Wrong end of the body...we are talking mouths not feets!

Its funny but bad breath is uusually or most commonly due to an occult sinus infection. Take an appropiate antibiotic for 10 to 14 days and ask your partner. Yes its possible to have a sinus infection and the only symptom is bad breath.
Honestly the bacteria is vial it can cause many internal diseases. So stop it and get real with your odors its all from bacteria. Bacteria like this will kill you if your immune system is weak. Why ignore it and deny that you have it. Fight it and you will live longer seek anti bacterial rinses. Chlohexidine,Listerine its germ warfare !!
ps Smoking really helps bacteria win --Stench be gone
So, when someone says boy, so and so's breath smells like s##t, it's scientifically true?
To parent with teen with foot odor. That was me as a teen. I got it from my dad. I learned how to keep my feet from smelling. I use a wash cloth to scrub my feet every day, encluding between the toes, and then use an enscented soap, Ivory, in particular (Those perfumed soaps cover up smell to an extent but I found that in the long run they seem to make my feet worse)to wash my feet. (I use gengler soaps for my body. I don't wear the same shoes two days in a row and wear coton socks (dark colors with dress shoes). This has kept me from having foot odors, and from offending potential GF's.
do u think a mouth wash with chlorhexidine or betadine helps
Another cause of bad breath could be tonsililiths.  They are small pellets of mucus and bacteria that get stuck in the tonsils. The deeper the crevices in the tonsils the bigger the problem. When someone with tonsililiths breaths out or talks, it warms up the tonsililiths (similar to a warming air freshner) and the breath that comes out smelling horrible.  I'm a dental hygienist and i have this problem. Needless to say, its very frustrating for me because i brush floss scrape and rinse often but cannot reach my tonsils.  I try to gargle as often as i can but i am considering removing the tonsils.  I have to research it more though.
Hi everyone. These suggestions/comments are very informative, thank you. I just wanted to share an experience I had that seemed really unusual. I read that lemon juice and warm water was very healthy consumed first thing in the morning. I started to use lots of lemon juice in everything. I started getting weird sinus taste/smell in my mouth and nose.It was awful.I went to several doctors and they kept treating it as a sinus infection. I stopped the lemon for awhile and it went away. I thought maybe the infection had just gone away  so I went back to the lemon. Within a week it happened again. I have not taken lemon for months and it never returned. I must have had some kind of allergy but did not know it. Thought this may have happened to others as well.
What about people who still have "permanent" retainers in their mouth. That has got to be a breeding ground for bacteria.
For the parent with the foot odor problem, there is a natural remedy that is amazingly successful I'm so surprised no one has mentioned it already. My husband had the same foot odor issue and I read this solution in a natural health foods book twenty years ago and we swear by it. Garlic pills will end the foot odor--and I mean completely end it--in about a week. The cheapy garlic tablets can  be foul, but a good health store brand like Kwai is coated to have no odor and no taste. Some compounds in the garlic apparently destroy bacteria within the body that contribute to persistent foot odor. The only down side is that as soon as you stop taking the pills, the odor returns. My husband just thinks of this as a party of his regular hygiene regimen now--like buying deo or toothpaste. Do talk to your son's doctor before trying because garlic's other natural remedy use is to treat mild hypertension. It can slightly lower one's blood pressure. In our case, this worked to our advantage to control borderline high blood pressure as well. Good luck!
@ Embarrased Hygenist

I feel your pain!  I never knew what they were called, only that it is truly embarrasing.  Thanks for the education!!!
Well.... Unfortunately, we are all human! and we all stink!!!!!     At least now I know what I can tell my daughter, whose breath smells like pee and I swear will never date (which may be a good thing throughout highschool) She's a very clean child, and healthy, brushes, flosses, rinses.. and still has bad breath. And she does drink green tea, completely coincidental.  :P  Bugs sucks.
brush with toothpaste & baking soda then rinse with proxide. repeat the proxide and hold in mouth awhile  . Make sure when you are brushing, you also brush the tongue as far back as possible [until gag] repeat the proxide and gargle. This will be the best effort for a clean/fresh mouth.
You know, folks.. your digestive system is just one long tube through your body. Mouth to throat to stomach to intestines.  The bacteria get into your mouth through reflux and burping.
Bad breath is just part of being human.  I'd bet that those with the S. Moorei just have more predisposition to reflux issues.
To:  Embarassed Hygienist,
Don't remove your tonsils yourself, enlist the aid of a qualified surgeon... :)
To embarassed hygienist- I am a nurse and also have tonsiliths.  I use a water pik at the lowest setting and rinse out the pocket where the tonsilith usually  sits.  This helps alot. Can visibly see it fall into the sink(gross). But I still have one that develops somewhere where I can't see it, ?adenoid area?. Hope to hear more about resolving Solobacterium moorei.
It appears that it is not foot in mouth that causes it, its more likely to be head up a** that is the culprit.
For smelly feet Dr. Oz says "Brew up some mild iced tea and put your feet in it for about 30 minutes a day for a week. "The tannic acid in the tea will actually tan your foot a little bit, which will dry it out," he says. "That's helpful in reducing the amount of sweat, and the odor as well."
I don't know if this helps anybody, but when my son was 6 mo., before teeth arrived, I used to give him the lemon slices from my water at resturants to suck and knaw on.  He loved it and everytime we went he would beg for them.  Well, he has great teeth, no cavities or bad breath. He is now 9.  My daughter is another story, she never got the hang of sucking on lemons and has soft teeth and has had a baby root canal at 3 yrs old.  The dentist told me she has a bad bacteria in her mouth which is contagious and can be passed from others with the same bateria.  So be aware of whose kissing your children. Also, she has a mouth odor problem which is like morning breath all day long.  Go figure.
Do not rinse your mouth with sink water, use purified drinking water. I premix a bottle of; water, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and essential peppermint oil. I rinse before and after I brush with baking soda, it also helps whitened my teeth.
TO ANYONE WITH STINKFOOT : 10 STEPS TO FRESH FEET
1- Buy a shakercan of Desenex Foot Powder
2- Wash your feet
3- Wash your socks
4- Dry out your shoes
5- Squeeze some Desenex into all your footware
6- Wack your footware around distributing Desenex
7- Put on clean socks
8- Wear dry footware only
9- Use Desenex Foot Powder 3 times a week
10- Change socks at least 3 times a week
I notice that none of these articles give any advice for those of us who do suffer from "other causes" of bad breath.  I have severe allergy problems which result in dry mouth from my medications, frequent sinus and respiratory infections, and also gastrointestinal problems.  I do brush my teeth and tongue, floss, have tried various rinses including peroxide, and still have foul breath.  What can someone like myself do?  Gum really doesn't do much and many people find gum chewing annoying.
Zinc is a natural remedy for foot and body odor, I had to to share a room w/my sister who had awful foot odor.  It also helps complexion issues. Thymol, in Listerene products is a natural oil from Thyme that has been proven to kill certain bad bacteria in the mouth, but one needs to hold it in the mouth for a time.
One more thought to add - netti pots are getting popular to help sinus issues including bad breath.
