The leg twitches are gone, but now I’m jonesing for the one-arm bandit

We’ve all grown used to those rapid-fire disclaimers at the end of today’s pharmaceutical commercials, where the announcer breathlessly rattles off all the potential side effects from taking the drug. Everything from death to dry skin to diarrhea.

Well, the commercials for restless leg syndrome (RLS) pills have brought something completely new to the table.

Gambling? Sexual urges?

What’s that about?

It’s about our old friend dopamine, explains Dr. Erika D. Driver-Dunckley, author of a recent study on gambling and increased sexual desire in patients taking the RLS medications Mirapex and Requip.

You know dopamine, that stuff in your brain that encourages you to drink and smoke and shop until you—and your credit score—drop.

“The medications in those commercials are for dopamine agonist drugs, which are drugs that go to your brain and stimulate dopamine receptors,” says Driver-Dunckley, assistant professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. “It just so happens that dopamine receptors are in the part of your brain that controls movement—which is why the drugs are made to help with RLS and Parkinson’s disease. But they’re also found in the part of the brain that has to do with your reward/pleasure system.”

Unfortunately, researchers haven’t been able to make a drug that’s specific enough to affect just the dopamine receptors that have to do with movement. “Getting a drug to work in one part of the brain and not another is very hard,” she says. As a result, a small number of people—about 1 percent, studies show—who use dopamine agonist drugs may suddenly be overwhelmed with urges to gamble or have sex.

Or comb their hair.

“It’s predominantly been gambling and sex that are reported,” she says. “But we’ve also heard from patients about everything from impulsive shopping to eating to hair combing to gardening to playing solitaire on the computer for hours.”

In a 2008 study of 300 patients taking dopamine agonist drugs for either Parkinson’s or RLS, one person EVEN reported an urge for “wanton traveling.”

Yes, that’s correct. Their restless leg medication actually gave them restless legs.

But dopaminergic side effects aren’t all fun and (crap) games, if they’re happening to you.
Driver-Dunckley says she’s talked to people who’ve suddenly developed huge Internet porn habits or squandered their entire retirement savings at casinos. A 74-year-old Parkinson’s patient developed “zoophilia as a possible complication of dopaminergic therapy,” according to a 2002 study in The Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Apparently, shortly after having his meds increased, the poor guy tried to have sex with the family dog.  A few times.

“It’s horrible and scary when something like that happens,” says Driver-Dunckley. “But I prescribe these drugs to lots of people every day. “

In almost every case side effects are a result of improper dosage, she explains. “Most of the patients who experienced these problems were taking higher dosages of the drug than were prescribed.”

Changing the dose ends the desire, she says.

As for those of you who might be wondering if an RLS prescription might be just the ticket to improve your luck at cards or love or both, forget about it.

“Most of the time, these people didn’t get lucky,” says Driver-Dunckley. “It didn’t make them a good gambler, just one who was unable to control their gambling urge.”

For a long time, I suffered with what Big Pharma now refers to as 'RLS' which escalated to severe cramps in my feet, legs and hands. Since I began taking calcium citrate, chelated magnesium citrate and a small amount of potassium (too much can be dangerous), my cramps and 'RLS' have completely disappeared. By the way, it is Big Pharma which creates the alphabet names of these so-called syndromes just to push their latest 'miracle' drug.
Thank you for all your input. I had for years thought that I was "unique" because I had these problems. As I have said before, the combination of Requip, CPAPP, and potassium, have had tremendous results. Someone in another response mentioned bananas as a form of relief. They are high in potassium, as are berries and other fruits. Yes you have to monitor your potassium levels, but it does SO MUCH for the cramping it is worthwhile IMHO.
To Linda,WantageTWP, NJ.  You have written my life. My Dr. had me on lots of Effexxor and Lyrica. They are in the same drug family. I benge at second hand stores as well as expensive boutiques. Then I come home to freecell for hours a day.  I have quit these drugs because I saw myself out of control. The Dr. just smiled and shook his head when I told him of the behavior. They know and don't care.
Hi I have RLS and have had it for yrs. I take requip twice a day and let me tell you I couldnt make it though the day or night without it. I find if you are sitting and put just a little bit of pressure on the back of your legs they will start acting up. Let me tell you about traving that is the worst thing in the world if you dont take your meds to help with the RLS. I have been so bad with my legs that I told my husband if I had a saw I would cut them off. They get so bad sometimes that I could just scream and cry. I hope my requip not stops working for me as I dont know what I would do. If you like to talk about this here is my name, Joann Mc Dermott
There is nothing wrong with any of you....If you want it ALL to go away, you must read: The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders, it will save your life!  I had "RLS", TMJ, IBS and a whole bunch of other problems. Guess what, NOW I DON'T! No drugs, no physical therapy.  Trust me Read the Book!
I suffer  from  severe RLS and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder for over 50 years, I have been treated with every drug you can imagine. Recently my new Neuroligist prescribed Lyrica which is commonly used to treat Fribomyalsia.  I for one have never slept more than 2 hours on any given night started sleeping  4-6 hours of un interrupted sleep the first week and had even gotten up to 8 hours of sleep. Although there were trade offs such as visual changes and weight gain.  I eventually rebounded because of where my RLS is will require some adjustments.

Lyrica will probably give many a great deal of relief  on an individual basis.
I lost a friend with this stuff. Known him for 30+ years. He never was a gambler, yet when the drug ruined him he lost everything. About 3 million! I tried bailing him out and almost lost 1/2 million trying! And the hookers. Went from a typical husband to hookers two or three time A DAY!

I,too, have this condition and it is visiable when accessing it.It occures mostly at night and at times I have leg cramps with it.My remedy is homeopathic MAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE.My dosage is 3 pellets under my tongue and relief happens in minutes.Found in health food sstores. It works!!!
I was having RLS when I found out I was severely anemic.  I had an iron transfusion and the RLS immediately stopped.  Prior to the transfusion walking did seem to help.
I did the sinemet thing for a while, but built up a tolerance and had to take a higher dosage AND more often to relieve my RLS.  Also tried quinine pills, which gave me ringing in my ears. I've also tried Mirapex at it's lowest and highest dosage, and while it helped the RLS, it also kept me awake (although my legs felt fine!)  The only thing I've found is an anti-convulsive called Tegretol.  My neurologist says he's never heard of treating RLS with it, but it seems to be the only thing that works on me with no side effects -- been on it over a year, never needing an increased dosage -- I swear by it!  Found this idea on www.rls.org
I HAVE BEEN TAKING REQUIP FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW AND LIVE IN A SEXLESS MARRIAGE.  I REALLY THOUGHT I WAS GOING CRAZY WHEN MY SEXUAL DESIRE CAME BACK WITH A VENGENCE.  IT'S BEEN 12 YEARS SINCE MY LAST SEXUAL ENCOUNTER AND LATELY I REALIZE HOW VERY MUCH I MISS IT.  I WILL SAY I CANNOT IMAGINE GIVING UP THE REQUIP, I MAY BE HORNY BUT MY LEGS DON'T TWITCH ANYMORE.
I've complained about the creepy feelings in my legs at night for years.  It took the ads on TV to give it a name.  The first night I took Requip I almost cried with relief.  I haven't experience any of the side effects, but would like to check out cheaper avenues of relief.  I agree that anyone who doesn't have the condition can't possibly understand it and how glorious the relief is.
I have been using, for the past month, L-Tyrosine as suggested by David from Salt Lake... It has not only taken care of my RLS, but also the tremors I have had my entire life. I get no side effects as with the Requip.
You know what really irritates me? People that have no clue about what really goes on or what we feel!!! Just like depression...if you have never experienced it, you have no clue and no right to judge us or it! I'm almost thirty and have dealt with this for about twenty five years. My previous employers have threatened to chain me to my chair, my bed and couch are on strike, and the only thing that helps at night is the constant turning of my right foot. I have to rub the sheets with my foot, always in constant effort to find the cold spots, etc. Out of the blue, I stomp my feet or have to swing them around. I have not tried meds, but will look into a couple suggestions I read here. I'm glad I'm not the only one losing sleep over this.
I took this drug and fell asleep midsentence while talking to someone. I stopped taking it after that.
My mom and I have always told our doctors if you've never experienced RSL you can't imagine how awful and irritating and debilitating it is. It will make you crazy with jumping. My mom is doing well with a low dose even though she has had this condition for decades, but finds she needs it earlier and earlier during the day. I am on the highest dose right now already and not too happy about it. It is effective, but I worry about what I will do if I get acclimated to it. BTW, it doesn't matter what I take -- magnesium, calcium, bananas, milk, exercise, no exercise, I used to smoke and now I don't, nothing matters, I have severe RLS every day, starting around 3:00. I suffer no side effects except drowsiness, which is often a good thing.
I was taking Miraplex for awhile but ran out of free samples that the doctor gave me so fell back onto a 'natural' remedy that my sister was swearing by.  Before going to bed try slathering your feet and ankles (even your legs if need be) with Vick's salve or the generic equivalent!!!!!!  Throw some socks on and crawl into bed......it worked?????  I never thought something that simple would help my RLS but it did. Give it a shot, what can it hurt????
I am prescibed dopamine agonists for another health problem, Pituitary Adenomas. Requip is the 4th med in this family of drugs in 13 years. Permax was pulled off the market for heart valve damage risks, Mirapex caused me to uncontrolably fall asleep, a warning on the label. Another side effect is- as the rx wanes and time for another dosage, I get muscle spasms, more like PLMD, a relative to RLS. Periodic Limb Movement Disorder is not comfortable either. The alternative to the dopamine agonists for me is brain surgery or serious endocrine problems. I have found myself playing Solitare online for hours into the middle of the night and shopping but not buying, I prefer any of these side effects to the Pituitary Adenomas, and I will likely be on a drug in the class for the rest of my life.
Gee, I have this, and my dad had it. Klonopin helps a bit, but I never thought it was hypochrondia, and I never bought into any ads on TV. Does the author take us all for a bunch of sheep?
i took requip for several years and was up to 25 miligrams a day
kicked into sex overdrive and now ive lost everything my wife my kids and a financal catastrophe
watch out this drug can take over your life
