Fused to a toilet? How? Huh?

When I was a little kid and spent too long in the bathroom, someone would inevitably pound on the door asking if I’d fallen in. Perhaps they should have warned me that if I sat there too long, I might become stuck to the seat like that poor 35-year-old woman from Kansas.

According to news reports, Pam Babcock developed a phobia about leaving one of the bathrooms of the house she shared with boyfriend, Kory McFarren, so she took up residence in it, her boyfriend of 16 years bringing her meals, clothes, water, etc.

After two years, McFarren finally became concerned about his girlfriend’s behavior (she was conscious but starting to “act groggy”), so he called in authorities. Much to their shock, they discovered that the woman had actually become physically attached to the toilet seat.

“She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body,” Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple told reporters when the story broke. So stuck that they had to pry the seat off the base of the toilet with a crowbar and send it with her to the hospital where it was finally removed.

How could this happen?

“It’s analogous to a couple of things,” says Dr.  Daniel Aires, director of the division of dermatology at the University of Kansas Hospital. “One of them would be a splinter. When someone gets a splinter in the skin, the skin grows around it. Another thing that’s similar is an earring or piece of large tribal jewelry, like you see people wearing now. The skin is very happy to grow around things – that’s a natural process.”

According to Sheriff Whipple, no one knows for sure how long Babcock had been sitting on the toilet before her skin became adhered to it, but he offered a rough guess.

“Our guess is probably three or four weeks,” he told msnbc.com. “She couldn’t even tell us how long she’d been actually seated. She really didn’t have any idea or concept of things like that. She was in terribly bad shape.”

Whipple said the woman, who he described as “very small, very petite,” appeared to have developed “bed sores” from sitting on the toilet seat for a prolonged amount of time and thought that her skin had become attached and grown around the seat as it tried to heal.

“Skin can heal and become accustomed to these situations very quickly,” said Aires, the dermatologist. “I’ve seen a case where someone became fused to a piece of white gauze bandage. The bandaged skin was injured and the skin grew into the gauze.  And that took only about a week and a half.”

How very sad. I thought this was a story ripped from The Onion when I read it on a another site the other day.
When I read the Wichita Eagle this morning I was horrified at the story. Images of a 500lb woman stuck in the bathroom. Now the facts are coming out and I feel more understanding of the situation.
The woman was "petite", both are noted by the sheriff as less than average of mental capability.
So here was a poor guy doing okay as far as affording housing and sustenance for he and his girlfriend but even though he urges her out she won't leave her self-imposed prison. They've been together for 16 years, he loves her deeply but is afraid to betray her lest she leave him. If the info that has come forth is correct I don't believe the man should be charged. They both obviously need help. This was a self-imposed
imprisonment, he didn't lock her in.
I don't mean to sound uncaring, but has anyone found the irony in the sheriff's last name being Whipple (as in ... don't sqeeze the Charmin).
How soon will THAT toilet seat be auctioned on Ebay?
Bet it will sell for more than Dorothy's red ruby slippers!!!  ONLY IN KANSAS!!!  There's no place like home!
i think if the boyfriend cared about her he would have gotten her help sooner
wow
How sad and strange. Even if phobic, why did she stay seated? Makes me wonder how the two met. This woman and her boyfriend need psychiatric help.
OMG-now I have heard everything. It's just unbelievable that someone would do that and more unbelievable that a boyfriend would watch it happen and to only act after two years. If this is true then the boyfriend should be charged because the woman was obviously very disturbed and a danger to herself.
I can see this becoming a new trend in our alternative community - "Body Fusing" instead of tatoo's and piercings.  Can you imagine people fusing a piece of "MOM" jewelry into their bicep rather than the oh so ordinary tatoo of MOM?  Sweet!
yikes!!!
This is crazy.... but, how can you charge the boyfriend with anything? He didn't force her to stay on the toilet or in the bathroom. As a matter of fact it seems to me that he tried to help her the best way that he knew how. Some people think that for every incident that happens someone should be brought up on charges. That is crazy. That is the problem with this country their are too many overzealous, politically correct, officials in office and it is bringing the whole country down.
I have read all these comments and everyone in their comments are so quick to judge. No one really know what was going on it that house. We don't know why the boyfriend really did contact the police until this time. First of all it is really NONE OF OUR BUSINESS. Anytime a problem arises in your house do you go out and put it on national news. Would you like people to know very little problem, you have. That is the problem with America - we are always in everyone elses problem and too busy telling people how to run their lives. Now, I don't know these people, and I am a PROUD AMERICAN so all the left wing people understand. These people ( the women and her boyfriend ) have issues they need to work out and it truly not our place to tell the Sheriff or any other person involved with case what should be done. Yes, this case is truly sad - but we need to bud out. Think about your problems first please.
SO HOW DIRTY IS THE TOILET?  HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE THING IF YOU ARE CONNECTED?
This story is beyond sad. And, I have to say I kinda do believe it can happen A few years ago, on "Animal Police" (Animal Planet), a german shepard was taken into custody. He had been mistreatd, and the stainless steel "choke" style collar actually became embedded in his skin, and his skin ahd grown around the collar in a simialr fashion as this woman. Anyway they both need intensive therapy.
To Deedee,
This IS America - which is a democratic republic and NOT a socialist country.  It is not the government's responsibility to take care of every little thing.  In fact, it's the government's responsibility to NOT get involved in universal health care!  And even if we did have universal health care that all mentally ill people had access to we would still have problems like this as not all mentally ill people would take advantage of the universal mental health care.  If they did then there would be no mental health problems in places like Britain, and I can assure you there are still numerous problems with mental health in Britain...

--------
From Deedee:
" If we had universal or national health care in this country, and if all mentally ill people had access to health care, we would not have this kind of situation happening. This is incredible that something like this can happen in the USA. This would never happen in the European Union, thanks to the support and care that all mentally ill people receive. When are the american people going to wake up and ask for what is their right? Affordable healthcare!
Deedee bend Oregon"
Did the couple have mental problems?  because this is some crazy stuff.
I'm flushed with happines, but it looks like the relationship is down the drain.
I can't say its all his fault, because he didn't have a gun to her head. It's all her own fault she needs help and he needs to wake up.Love is blind as u can see.
How did she sleep?
These things only happen to Americans because they are all lazy and stupid. You never hear stories like that happening in the Caribbean or UK or any other part of the world.... Gosh..
Reading all the comments gave me a lot of laughs. But to get back to the serious side, the comments questioning why no one notices that something was amiss help answer the comments questioning why this should have made the news. This news item helps us to be aware that these things DO go on, so we can be aware and we can be there for each other. Family DO NOT like to announce problems.
Unfortunately our health care system stinks. You are very fortunate if you can go to a good health-care provider of your choice, and forget about house-calls (much less bathroom calls)if you are really sick. You have to lose most of your assets to qualify for Medicare if I remember correctly, and then how can you afford to pay for repairs for your unreliable old car to get to the doctors? And this presumes the sick person can and will go? If you do have insurance on your own, once you have a chronic illness the insurance company will make sure to price you out of the market so you will eventually not be able to afford that insurance. (Disgusting, since the original premise of spreading the risk has been continually been degraded in the interest of profits). Now assume you are not intellectually up to fighting all of this . . . You get depressed (if you aren't already), feel hopeless, and you do nothing.
My brother hanged himself years ago. I was shocked to learn none of the neighbors nor my relatives knew he was an alcoholic. My parents told no one. One neighbor would pay him for errands with bottles of booze. You never know.
This chick is psycho.  If we go around charging all men/boyfriends/husbands with crimes like this - we're all in trouble.  From what I've read and heard, (besides the fact he should have done something sooner) she wouldn't get off the toilet.  Not his fault, she wouldn't let him in the bathroom.  If he did force her, shame on him.  If he didn't, he shouldn't be charged.
This is amazing... the skin and its abilities are beyond imagination!
I am confused. Was she living inside the bathroom for 2 years? She couldn't have been sitting on the WC for that period of time. Did the bathroom have a closet? And s hoe cabinet? :D
there were 2 bathrooms in the house
Oh' let see, here is my lay terms comment. I have seen bed sheets, underwear, and disposable briefs cut from wounds. I have also seen loved ones lie about the home life of patients. They believe that they are truly protecting the spouse, boyfriend, grandmother and so on. Yes, the health care system in the US is sometimes screwy. But even if this woman had the option to get help she would have refused it. Crazy is crazy, no matter where{"European Union"} your at. Those who seek help will find it. Victims of mental illness do not always think they need help.
Yes its newsworthy- learned what can happen if one sits on a toilet for too long, much more useful than the Hollywood 'stork watch'. Sad that some people want to point at this mentally incapacitated woman and scream about imaginary infections- classy.
(to R.Fields) He did use his head... there was another bathroom in the mobile home!
wow...where is this world going to...
"If we had fairy dust in this country, and if all mentally ill people had access to fairy dust, we would not have this kind of situation happening."

I live in one of those european countries with national health coverage. Over a third of every paycheck goes to feed the monster yet my neighbor's wife had to stop working to take care of their 22 year old kid because no health care center exists for them. Univerasal health care that takes care of everyone is a mirage!
Unbelievable! Her boyfriend needs help too. Nobody in their right mind would allow that to go on for any exteneded period of time. And yes I remember Mr. Wipple from the ad.Too funny!
I don't believe this story....this lady get stuck to a toilet and the sheriff's name is Whipple?!  That's too much of a coincidence.  I think in a few days we'll be reading that this story was a hoax!
Ok, so I was reading the comments and it baffles me that you people only want to talk about how the woman needs help. HELLOOO what about her partner who just let her sit on the toilet for 2yrs. Think about it who really needs more the help? The girl who sat on the toilet for 2yrs or the guy who let it happen. To me she may have issues but the guys is twisted to sit there and let it happen
Why would you even consider charging the boyfriend?  Is it right that we place the responsibility of caring for one adult on another.  If she wanted to stay in the bathroom for two years it is her right as an adult to do so.

As for blaming healthcare for this fiasco, that is just absurd.  One of the biggest problems in this country is that people think they are owed things because they live here.  The only right you have is that if you if you disagree with something to not participate or change it.
I have seen many patients like this.  Many of whom were Bi-polar patients.  One of which became affraid that someone was after her so she crouched behind a couch for 4 days.  Her muscles in her legs were atrophied and she had to have surgery.
Think about it!!!! If the boyfriend would have called to try to get help by saying his girlfriend would not leave the bathroom. How do you think the authoritys would have reacted? One thing I have learned in life if you can not help a person if they first do not want to help themselves.
I have to say the comment about Mr. whipple was the funniest thing I have read all day.  thank you
pete in austin!
When my mother was 87, she sat on the toilet for several hours. Every so often, she would wipe and flush ... for no reason (she hadn't done anything). After four hours, I fought like the dickens to get her off the toilet, up, and back in her bed. She screamed, cursed (which was very unsual), hit me, and hollered that I was hurting her and didn't love her. All of this behavior was very uncharacteristic. I eventually called an ambulance and brought her to the hospital where doctors determined that she had had a psychotic break due to a multitude of "mini-strokes." She had finally had one too many. Once the doctors put her on Risperdal, she was fine.

LMAO I was laughing hysterically @ yer comment!
This story has to be an early April Fool's Day joke.  I just can't believe that this happened.
I assume this boyfriend/girlfriend relationship was plutonic.  If not, I'm curious to see how that works.
Very very sad, is the fact that nobody in her family cared enough to demand a face to face with this obviously ill lady. It's somewhat also obvious why she was so disturbed that she would do something so drastic to stay away from her family! I will pray that the entire family get the help they really all need! She is just a reflection of this entire family.
WOW!!
I think, I would have become concerned by day 2.
wondering about their sex life.
The boyfriend should not be charged in this issue. And the female should get help, drs. should know something is totaly wrong with her to allow this to happen, she could have got up and walked around before she couldn't, that was her choice, and she chose to stay. If this is all true, then it is sad to think that someone would let them selves get to that point. She needs some kind of help.
It's not really that hard to imagine, like mentioned above we have become a private society, how long has it been since you have talked to your neighbor, i.e. we spend more time chatting on line than we do to our neighbors. lots of ppl just go on living in their own little world(I do it also once in a while) unfortunatly.  and should he be charged? good question ,I know the guy personally, I don't believe he made her stay in there as a punishment as some have mentioned, things may have changed him but when i knew him he's always been timid and quiet. as far as her recovery (i have family still there) it sounds as if she may loose her legs, sadly enough. it is not to uncommon in the papers today to read of articles where someone has died in thier apartment only to found when the rent was late or the smell got to bad, so is it really that hard to believe this happened.

P.S. yes the sheriff's name is really whipple there are quite a few of them around in that area.
I'm not sure if this comment will be deleted by MSNBC, but in my opinion, this story was published and glorified because the "NEWS MEDIA" is not about news anymore, its about sensationalism and ratings. This is why television news channels are no longer interested in reporting what is important, but what gets ratings. It is a sad world we live in now, and it will only get worse unfortunately.
I just got a strange feeling that this poor soul is being mistreated. I dunno. It takes a lot of convincing even to a phycho to seat in the toilet for 2 years....
I feel sorry for the people that think universal health care would have eliminated this situation.  Perhaps they are just as mentally ill as the person(s) they are describing, because they obviously have an agenda before there eyes and can not see well.  Has everyone forgotten that each of us have the right to refuse medical care even to the point of death.  You can not force medical care on someone unless you first prove them mentally imcompentant in a court of law.  The boyfriend at best could have went to DFS and initiated that.  But if he was mentally challenged as well he should and could not be held responsible.  Have any of you taken care of someone and been their health care provider?  When they say no, it means no.  The boyfriend states that he continually tried to coax her out so it wasn't like he was holding her prisoner.  And the poor individual that relates this to Bush, how sad is this that someone could use a tradgedy like this to promote a political agenda!
I can't wait for the Lifetime movie...  LOL
The article said that she was in the bathroom for two years, but did bath, eat, and change clothes. She was likely on the toilet less than a month- granted, that is about 29 days and 23.5 hrs too long, but she was not on there for 2 years.

Sadly, if a guy who you've been with for 16 yrs is unable to care enough to be alarmed after a day or two, who could she turn to?

To address the urban legend comment~ no. this really DID make the news and trust me, no one could make something that bizarre up!!
