Roger Clemens licks his lips. But does that mean he’s lying?

Baseball hero Roger Clemens swore under oath during a grueling Congressional hearing Wednesday that he didn’t use steroids during his phenomenal baseball career. “I’ve been accused of something I’m not guilty of,” he defiantly told committee members. His words may have denied the claims by his former personal trainer, but his body was saying something else. At least that’s what one body language expert thinks.

During the 4½-hour hearing, Clemens was agitated, he didn’t make direct eye contact with the committee members and he even stumbled over the name of Brian McNamee, his chief accuser.

“The body doesn’t lie, the voice doesn’t lie,” Lillian Glass told NBC’s Peter Alexander Wednesday during the hearings. “When you look at Roger Clemens, you see a lot of lip licking… It’s very consistent. He’s very nervous….You see a lot of wrinkling of the forehead. He looks down. He’s disconnected. That makes you question what’s really going on with him.”

Former New York Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens couldn't keep his tongue in his mouth while testifying before Congress.

Glass was all praise for McNamee, who sat at the same table.

“McNamee was forward. He was ready. He was receptive … not defensive. He looked right at the people who were questioning him. He wasn’t nervous.” WATCH THE VIDEO

Glass claims that when people are lying they move their shoulders, clench their jaws, lick their lips and shuffle their feet.

But does showing anxiety really go hand-in-hand with lying? It’s popular to talk about a person’s shifty eyes or to assume that when someone is fidgety or nervous that they’re not telling the truth. Dr. Simon Rego, licensed clinical psychologist at Montefiore Medical Center in New York isn’t so sure.

“Certain movements or gestures like those may be more of an indication of anxiety or nervousness than lying per se,” says Rego. “This type of lie detection seems analogous to polygraph tests. They don’t really detect when someone is lying as much as when they are anxious.”

Other experts say that tone of voice is more revealing than eye contact, although people who are telling the truth often stumble over their words. It’s the practiced liar who tends to be the smooth talker, they say.

No one would accuse Clemens of being a smooth talker under questioning. His career is on the line, and as he said during the hearing, “I’m never going to have my name restored.”

Still, it’s not only the body language experts who didn’t believe Clemens. Just 1 in 5 msnbc.com readers think the Rocket is telling the truth.

Has to be telling the truth!...you've got to be kidding me...he does not care about being offered an out...with his ego, the only thing on his mind is the Hall of Fame...if he admits to it, he risks it all
There is speculation of a presidential pardon because of Clemens relationship with the Bush family.  Surely there are more pressing issues for the George W. to focus on.  If he does issue a pardon then I think Marion Jones should be first in line.
i think the real question here is WHO CARES?? and why is the government of arguably the most powerful nation on the planet wasting time and resources on SPORTS??? this is completely reminiscent of ancient rome...use the gladiators (i.e. sports) to keep the eye of the public off the affairs of the empire (in this case the war in iraq, the economy and possible recession, etc)...it really is no wonder that this country is the laughing stock of the world...
For those asking why this is Congress's business, I believe it has to do with Baseball's anti-trust exemption.  In exchange for being allowed to run an otherwise illegal monopoly, they agreed to Congressional oversight.  Also, any players using HGH or steroids were, indeed, committing a prosecutable crime, since even the drugs that are legal weren't legally prescribed to them.  It's the same as buying Oxy on a street corner.

Oh, and Clemens was clearly lying his bleeding butt off.
is he a liar? do i care? what i care about are those so called body language experts- if you move your shoulders, maybe sitting in an uncomfortable chair for hours under scrutiny makes your shoulders stiff. mine get stiff in long car   rides!! or maybe the clenched jaw, i clench my jaw under stress, i've caught myself clenching while using the bathroom! who knows why! my dentist says its a really bad practice!!! licking lips? are they chapped? or sore, maybe he's thirsty, or just tired of sitting and wants something to do! shuffle feet- well again i'm guilty!!! i shift my weight from leg to leg and wiggle my feet while in line because i have flat feet and a toe that i cut the nail wrong and it hurts, also i sometimes get 'heel spurs' then i really go from foot to foot!!! look guys, one of the worst times i ever went thru was when my boss accused me of lying, throwing questions at me one after the other, then when i went blank, he said 'what? can't think of another lie fast enough?' i wasn't lying, and i go blank when accused of something i didn't do-can't even recall my own name!!!totally tongue tied!! it goes back to when my mom grilled me over and over, and never believed a thing i said, even when i had proof! so do you analyze everyones upbringing before you make an 'expert' statement about there body language?? so think that one over when considering 'language expert's' advice or opinions because thats all they are  OPINIONS!! oh, and i rolled my neck and shoulders while writing this!!
When Clemens said "nothing would be said at this hearing that will restore my name"(paraphrasing) he proved he was lying.  If he was telling the truth and McNamee was lying, Clemens would have known that McNamee could have changed his story and come clean with the truth.  But Clemens must have known that would never happen, therefore knowing nothing could be said to restore his name.
This whole Roger Clemens situation makes me sick...Does anyone see what's wrong with this picture? Clemens is getting more face time in court over steriods then drug addicts and drug dealers get for pushing harder drugs in the streets. Why don't the Commissioner just cut the crap and fine him, suspend him, or kick him out the game...For the love of God stop wasting are tax money and time!
Remember "I did not have sex with that woman!"

R. Clemens is GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY!
MMM interesting. Roger Clemens is My Dad's cousin. But like the cousin thats the kid of the man that was the child of My Dad's Grandfather. My Name is Lorrie Clemens. I'm 15, i dont know shit aboutt this stuff. Im a chick, but this dude, he's just a weirdo.
